Dear Eagle Fans:
Welcome to what I’m sure will be
another exciting season of Eagle
baseball. As I’m certain you know, MCC has one of
the richest traditions on the diamond of any junior
college program in the Southeastern United States.
In considering the many championships MCC has
won, the players the program has produced – such
as former Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee of the
Philadelphia Phillies – and the string of highly
successful coaches who have led the Eagles over
the years, I can make that statement with great
confidence.
No less than three former Eagle coaches have
gone on to lead NCAA Division 1 programs – the
legendary Corky Palmer and Scott Berry at the
University of Southern Mississippi and Russ McNickle
at St. Leo University in Florida. A host of other Eagle
coaches have gone on to assistantships at major
colleges. I don’t think another junior college in the
state can boast of such a lineage.
But all the titles and trophies that this storied
program has produced are far less important to
me than the ideals for which the Eagles stand
– character, dedication, perseverance, pride
and excellence in the classroom. Those are the
Meridian Community College
froM The PresidenT
ingredients that define a true champion, and that’s
what we expect of our players and coaches at MCC.
To that end, I am very excited about the leadership
represented in our program in head coach Chris
Curry and assistants Dillon Sudduth and Thomas
Tillery. They exhibit a total commitment as a
coaching staff and they demand the same of their
players.
I’m also excited about the improvements our Board
of Trustees are making to Scaggs Field – a new field
house, new fencing, a new irrigation system, and a
new batting practice facility. Located in the heart of
our campus, it’s a facility in which our community
can take great pride.
Thanks so much for your support of MCC baseball.
I truly hope you enjoy reading about our program,
coaches and players in this publication.
Cliff Lee: Eagle alumnus dedicated to his alma mater
The Meridian Community College baseball program thanks former MCC standout Cliff Lee for all of his support in the past year . Lee pitched at MCC
from 1998-1999 and has continued
a very successful baseball career
with the Philadelphia Phillies . Lee
has enjoyed a great deal of success
at the professional level and was
honored with the American League
Cy Young Award in 2008 while with
the Cleveland Indians .
Lee has made two appearances
in the World Series while with the
Phillies and the Texas Rangers . Lee
won two games in the 2009 World
Series against the New York Yankees
and was the first pitcher since Deacon Phillippe in Game one of the 1903
World Series to pitch a complete game in the World Series with 10 or
more strikeouts and no walks .
Lee has played an instrumental role in the renovations to Scaggs Field
that is currently in construction heading into the 2012 season . We thank
Lee and his wife Kristen for all of their support to our baseball program
at MCC .
Scaggs Field
Meridian Community College’s Scaggs Field is considered one of the top
junior college baseball fields in the country .
More than just a field of dreams, Dr . William F . “Bill” Scaggs became MCC’s
first official president in 1968 and served in that capacity until the fall of
1998 . Under Dr . Scaggs’ leadership, the College engaged in an impressive
capital improvements program, adding several buildings to its physical
plant and continuously expanding its career and technical education and
academic programs . He guided the establishment of The MCC Foundation,
and became one of the state’s leaders in educational technology . Upon
Scaggs’ retirement, MCC’s baseball facility was named “William F . Scaggs
Field” in recognition of not only his considerable contributions to the
College but also his abiding love for the national pastime .
Meridian Community College
The Hit Hut
sponsored by Pizza Hut
faCiliTies
The Eagles indoor hitting facility is fully Astroturf and holds one of the
largest nets ever made by Richardsons Net Inc . for batting cage purposes .
Added to MCC in 2005, the Hit Hut allows Eagle players to hit no matter
the weather conditions .
MCC Locker Room
The Locker room facility is equipped with individual oak lockers for every
MCC player, a comfortable carpeted lounge area with couches, TV, DVD,
stereo and Internet access .
enovaTions
The MCC baseball program has made significant
improvements to Scaggs Field since the end of the 2011
season . The first project completed during the fall was
the addition of a new scoreboard which was donated by
Coca-Cola and Rush Foundation Hospital . The scoreboard
is wireless and comes fully equipped with new art work
and LED lighting .
Along with a new scoreboard, a new outfield fence
has been installed . The fence was donated by Mike Wilson
of Conway, Ark ., and Cedar Creek Wholesale . The construction
of the fence was completed by the baseball team and
painted in the traditional green color . The next project completed
during the fall was the resurfacing of Scaggs Field . The
infield was resurfaced and laser graded by Charles Brunetti of
Diamond Design .
Currently, the new fieldhouse is under construction and
is expected to be completed by the summer of 2012 . The
fieldhouse will feature 40 wooden lockers, showers and bathrooms,
uniform storage and a laundry room . The second level
will consist of coaches offices, locker room and shower, and
a “tradition room” to display the trophies and awards of MCC
baseball . Along the front of the fieldhouse will be an open air
deck for fans to watch the game . On the northwest side of the
fieldhouse, a covered hitting facility with turf floors and two 70-foot long batting
cages will be constructed . The Scaggs Field renovation project will conclude with
a new brick wall backstop and netting . In addition, new fencing will be installed
down each foul line with brick columns .
The upgrade project has been made possible by the MCC administration,
Philadelphia Phillies and former Eagle pitcher Cliff Lee, the MCC Baseball Alumni,
and the community of Meridian .
Meridian Community College
Kasey Hinton
The Meridian Community College
Eagles are looking to make a big splash in
2012 and make a run at a championship
season . The Eagles finished the 2011
season with an overall record of 33-21
but were eliminated at the Region 23
Tournament at Delgado Community
College in New Orleans . MCC returns a
solid nucleus of players from 2011 and the
Eagles will rely on new additions to return
the team to national prominence .
“Our goals are always to compete for
championships every season at Meridian
Community College,” said Head Coach Chris
Curry . “We also want our players to represent our program in a first class
manner on and off the field .”
The Eagles will look to make a return to the NJCAA College World
Series in Grand Junction, Colo ., with a solid group of pitchers entering the
season .
“I think with any baseball team it begins on the mound and that will
be the case for our team . We had great offensive production last season,
but I believe we didn’t go as far as we wanted because we were a little
short on the mound . I believe we have answered some of the questions
on the mound with new additions and guys with experience from last
season,” Curry said .
MCC will be led on the mound by Jackson Lowery, Wes Stokes,
Michael Manley and Samuel Peterson . Lowery enters his first season
with the Eagles after transferring from the University of Central Arkansas .
Lowery pitched primarily out of the bullpen last season for UCA but is
expected to be in the starting rotation for the Eagles . Stokes returns for
his sophomore season with MCC and should be a member of the starting
2012 season ouTlook
rotation for the Eagles . Peterson will be able to log solid innings on the
mound and could hit in the middle of the lineup for Meridian .
The biggest returning piece of the puzzle for the Eagles will be the
return of catcher Wade Wass . The Pensacola, Fla ., native was among the
top three in most offensive categories for the Eagles last season .
“Wass is a vocal leader on the team and we are looking for big things
from him this season,” added Curry .
Wass has already signed to continue his college baseball career at
the University of Alabama . Some freshman additions to the team who
will look to make an immediate impact in 2012 include: Jonathan
Youngblood, Mitchel Babb, Caleb DeLee, Tyler Dixon and Tanner
Vandevere .
MCC returns several sophomores from last season that will contribute
in 2012 and those include: Brian Donohoe, Kasey Hinton, Johnny Tolson,
Dustin James, Michael Manley, Josh Lee and Dalton Short .
Conference leading batter Jantzen Black .
Before his stop at Arkansas Tech,
Curry was an assistant coach for Hendrix
head CoaCh Chris Curry
College (Conway, Ark .) in 2006-2007 .
as a professional, Curry worked his way up to the triple-A level with the
Cubs between 1999 and 2002 then moved to the Giants where he played
double-A ball until the 2005 season . His final season in professional
uniform came during the 2006 season as a member of the independent
Northern Leagues’ Gary Southshore Railcats where he was an All-Star his
final season .
A native of Conway, Ark ., Curry was an all-state pitcher and catcher
for Conway High School . He set 10 hitting and catching records with CHS
in 1994 to 1996 .
Upon graduation from Conway, Curry then signed with MCC . Curry
played for Eagle Head Coach Scott Berry from 1997-98, where he helped
lead the Eagles to back-to-back Region 23 and Miss-Lou Conference titles
and an appearance in the 1998 JUCO World Series . As a standout catcher
for MCC, Curry was ranked the No . 1 Junior College player by Baseball
America in 1998 . That same season he was selected as the starting
catcher for Team USA JUCO All Star team vs . Japan . He was also named
All Region 23 first team and All Miss-Lou Conference first team selection
in 1997 and 1998 .
After playing for MCC, Curry signed with SEC power Mississippi State
University where he led SEC catchers in fielding percentage . Curry left
the Bulldogs in 1999 after being drafted in the ninth round of the Major
League Draft .
ExCELLEnCE
The MCC Eagle Baseball
team continued its success off the field
by posting a team grade point average
of 3 .3 for the fall semester . Thirty-one
of the thirty-five players had a gpa of
3 .0 or higher which equals a total of
89 percent . Of those 31 players, seven
players qualified for the President’s
List which requires a 4 .0 gpa, and 14
players qualified for the Dean’s List
which requires a gpa above a 3 .25 .
Along with the President’s and Dean’s
Lists, 14 players either qualified or
maintained membership for Phi Theta
Kappa, the international academic honor
society that that requires a 3 .5 gpa for
membership .
Coach Curry said “I can’t say enough
about how proud I am of our team and
the way they are answering the challenge
of being a program of excellence both
on and off the field . A lot of credit goes
to our academic adviser Lori McClain
as well as Coach Sudduth and Coach
Tillery for handling their schedules and
the hours of study hall . This is another
indication of the commitment our team
shown this fall, and we expect this level
of achievement to carry over to the field
this spring .”
