JOHN McCORMICK
Water Journey
February 5–28, 2009
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 5, 6:00–8:00 p.m.
John McCormick’s recent work demonstrates current concerns about the environment with such
images as a nautilus shell hovering above a crashing surf, winged predators who depend on water, and
men rowing through landscapes scarred by the human presence. Yet the artist is also interested in
historical painting between the Civil War and the Armory Show. He appropriates scullers from Thomas
Eakins’ paintings, making them time travelers in his contemporary landscapes. The blue lines at the bottom
and top of some of the paintings denote the sky and water as blue parallels between which we exist.
These oils are executed on surfaces varying from panel and linen to the lids of cigar boxes.
Water Planet, 2008, oil on cigar box, 8.5 x 5.5 inches
