High-Performance Mineral-Aggregate Dry-Shake Floor Hardener
Description
Atlas Tech-Hard is a ready-to-use, high performance,
mineral aggregate dry-shake floor hardener designed to
provide a more abrasion resistant concrete floor surface.
This non-metallic, non-rusting hardener is a specially
blended mixture of portland cement, natural quartz
aggregate and proprietary admixtures. Tech-Hard may
be used for interior or exterior applications and will
conform to floor flatness specifications. Available in many
colors and an energy efficient light reflective formulation.
Application Procedures
Pre-Construction Recommendations
Consult ACI Report 302 as a guide for proper placement
of concrete.
Arrange a pre-construction meeting with representatives
from all companies involved with the installation of the
dry-shake material. At the meeting, provide a copy
of the proposed concrete mix design to your Atlas
representative.
Prior to installation, a 10’ x 10’ sample pour should be
placed using the actual jobsite personnel, products and
installation methods to be approved by the owner/
architect.
Determine material needs before the job begins.
Concrete Placement
Place, consolidate and level concrete to proper grade.
Use a wooden bullfloat/highway straightedge to “open”
the concrete surface. Using a metal float in this instance
is not recommended because it will prematurely seal the
concrete surface and possibly cause future delamination.
Application
For most applications, a mechanical spreader that evenly
applies the floor hardener onto the fresh concrete is
recommended. Prior to the appearance of bleed water
on the surface, apply approximately 2/3 of the specified
hardener to the surface in a consistent and even
application. Do not apply the dry-shake into standing
bleed water. Allow enough time for the hardener to
absorb the moisture from the concrete. Proper
absorption will be evident by a darkening of the
dry-shake material.
Use a wooden bullfloat/highway straightedge to
embed the hardener into the surface and to remove
any surface irregularities. Allow enough time for the
concrete to set-up and sufficiently support the weight
of a power trowel with float blades or a pan (do not use
combination blades). Use the power trowel to embed
the hardener. Do not add extra water to the concrete
surface.
Apply the remaining 1/3 of the hardener amount to the
prescribed area at a right angle to the initial application.
Float the remaining hardener into the concrete slab
surface with a bullfloat/modified highway straightedge.
Use the power trowel with float blades or a pan to
embed the hardener. Do not add extra water to the
concrete surface.
For the edges, use wood floats, laminated canvas-resin
floats or darbies. The edges typically cure more quickly
than the center of the slab; monitor the moisture
evaporation closely for proper timing of the floating
operation.
Application (cont.)
Begin finish troweling as soon as all sheen has
disappeared from the concrete surface. On the first
pass, the trowel blades should be set as flat as possible
to avoid digging into the surface. The trowel blades may
be gradually raised to slowly close the surface.
Do not close the slab too early, as blistering or
delamination may occur. Do not burnish, over-trowel or
use magnesium tools with the colored or light reflective
formulations. Do not add water to the surface. During
rapid drying conditions, such as high temperatures or
high winds, Atlas Finish-Film may be spray-applied on the
surface to help prevent rapid moisture loss. The finished
surface may be broomed or textured.
If using an automatic spreader, such as the Somero
Laser Spreader, up to 1.5 lbs. per sq. ft of dry-shake
may be applied on a one-pass application. Contact your
Atlas representative for further information.
Curing
After finishing, apply an Atlas Tech curing compound,
such as Atlas Cure & Seal-14%. If surface must be
protected from construction traffic, cover the floor with
builder paper or polyethylene. Contact your Atlas
representative for curing colored dry-shake applications.
For maximum protection and performance, seal the floor
with Atlas Elite-HS TM .
Cleaning
Clean tools and equipment with clean water. Uncured
material may be removed with water. Cured material may
be removed mechanically.
Packaging
may cause skin irritation and possible cement burns.
Avoid direct contact where possible, wash exposed skin
area promptly with water. If any of the cementitious
material gets into the eyes, rinse immediately and
repeatedly with water and then call a physician. The
manufacturer recommends using an approved mask or
respirator when working with cementitious material. Do
not take internally. Harmful if ingested. Keep out of the
reach of children.
