Free Wheeling 3-Wheelers
By Becki Yoder
Take a visit to the Pine Village campus and you will likely see 24
wheels of a different kind. What are these wheels you ask? These wheels
have been progressively added to the campus background over the past few
years -- three by three. Currently, there are eight households on campus
adorned with three wheel bicycles or
tricycles, if you will.
The first “tri” to find its way
to Pine Village is owned and operated
by Verna Goering. At age 95,
Verna still regularly rides around the
campus and pedals to most of the
events and activities at Pine Village.
This was a Mother’s Day gift from
her children many years ago. This
proves to be a safer alternative to her
two wheel bicycle. The most recent
“tri” addition to the campus makes a
home at Toby and Erma Goerings’.
Toby, age 90, got his “tri” from Ed-
die Stucky’s family. He calls it “a
lifesaver.”
Some perfer their 3-wheelers to
the automobile. “It gets really good gas mileage,” said Marjean Stucky,
who has had her “tri” for three years. “I don’t even have to start my car. I
ride it everywhere on campus.”
Like the postal service, Marjean rides her “tri” no matter what season
Care Level Names
With the Memorial Home name changing to
Pine Village, this also brought up the topic of
official names for each Care Level. Pine Village
is a continuing care retirement community
offering different levels of care including
independent, assisted living, health/skilled
care and memory care. The line-up of names
is as follows:
• Independent Living – The Village
• Krehbiel Apartments will remain the same
• Assisted Living – The Assisted Living
Cottages
Laura Janzen, Marvis Doering, Marjean Stucky, Toby Goering,
John Roberts, Arlo & Geneva Flickner, and Verna Goering.
• Health/skilled Care – The Neighborhoods
• Memory Care – Memory Lane
it is, hot, cold, wet, dry. John Roberts, who purchased his “tri” this year in
Hutchinson, calls his “tri” his “Little Truck.” “I can haul all kinds of things
to the composite pile. The bad thing is that there is no air conditioned cab
in the summer and no heater in the winter,” stated Roberts.
Call them what you like- tricycle,
3-wheeler, bike, etc…. All the riders
agree that it is not offensive or childish
at all for people to call them tricycles.
“I’m in my second childhood anyway,”
chuckled Marvis Doering, who
purchased her “tri” about one year ago
from Wal-Mart, “so that name is a perfect
fit for me.”
The reasons for wanting or
purchasing a “tri” were very similar
among the group.
“We got it for my wife, Geneva, so
she could get around the campus better,”
said Arlo Flickner, who got their
“tri” from their neighbor Reva Goodwin.
“Then I started riding it around
the campus. I don’t get tired riding
like I do walking. It’s kind of fun. I am glad we have it.”
Laura Janzen has replaced her jogging with riding her “tri”. For
many others the addition of the third wheel was a safety issue.
“I couldn’t ride my 2-wheeler anymore; I was too unsteady,” said
Marjean Stucky.
Marvis Doering says she “didn’t learn to
ride a bicycle very well” and feels much more
confident on her 3- wheeler. Of course, putting
power to the pedal is a great mode of exercise
and very beneficial. All of the riders
unanimously agree that exercise was one of the
main reasons for purchasing a “tri”. Riding the
3-wheeler around the campus also is a social
event.
Goodbye Mary
By Jim Huxman
For several weeks now a topic of conversation has been Mary
Cross’s announcement that in early October she will be relocating
to Harrisonburg, Virginia. This announcement happened to come
as our Gazette committee was making assignments for the 3rd
calendar quarter issue. On a recent Friday morning I spent a delightful
time with Mary that underscored what a special lady she
is, how she has impacted Pine Village and how she will be missed.
QUESTION: Mary, what was the attraction for you and Don
to come to Pine Village (Memorial Home)?
In answering this question, Mary reflected on what a wonderful
and gifted person Don was and what a “fighter” he was. With
fondness she talked of the years she and Don spent in Kansas
City with Don having the opportunity to finish his medical career
teaching graduate students at the KU Medical Center while she
completed her theology degree at St. Paul School of Theology in
the Kansas City area. When finished, it was then off to Clyde,
Kansas, where Mary held a pastorate for 5 years. From Clyde
it was a move to Columbus, Kansas, to take on another pastorate.
It was during the drive from Clyde to Columbus in separate
vehicles that Mary vividly saw Don’s decline due to Parkinson’s
and arthritis. Over the next year the conversations kept returning
to how it was time to relocate to a setting where there was senior
housing with services.
Mary paused and then stated, “You know Don and I never
looked for housing and services elsewhere. I guess we always
knew we would come here because of Don’s family who were
living here.”
people, that’s nice,” says Nancy Cole, who received
her “tri” as a birthday gift in the spring.
“It’s a blue Meridian, with a rear view mirror
and a bell.”
Nancy’s husband, Elbert, took on the
daunting task of assembling the entire tricycle.
“I can ride, sit and talk to people. I enjoy
it,” said John Roberts.
The extreme heat of summer 2011 has left
most of the 3-wheelers parked in hot garages.
Toby Goering “can’t wait until it cools off” so
Page 3
he can get out and ride again. Once it cools off
Nancy Cole suggests that maybe “we can have
some tricycle races?” Arlo Flickner is quite
certain that he would not want to be in any race
against Marjean or Verna. Everyone knows the
dog days of summer will soon pass and the cool
temperatures of fall will quickly arrive. For
now, the 8x3= 24 wheels will remain parked in
those overheated garages anxiously waiting the
cooler days that lay ahead.
QUESTION: Did Pine Village (Memorial Home) serve you
and Don well?
With a smile and chuckle, Mary shared how when they started
thinking of relocating to Pine Village, she was already thinking
how she would decorate their Krehbiel Apartment. Mary knew
the Krehbiel Apartments would work because of the social interaction
it would afford Don. They also looked forward with anticipation
to exercises in the Wellness Center. I did not know
but Mary informed me that Don had a beautiful tenor voice and
longed to be a part of the strong musical tradition in this community.
Don found opportunities here to sing almost to the end
of his life. Opportunities like worship services, sing-a-longs and
Moundridge Senior Singers. Mary regrets that Don couldn’t be
more involved in church choir but lack of physical dexterity and
response made it difficult for him to do so.
With the progression of Don’s disease the time came for Don
to be placed into healthcare. Mary was quick to respond how she
appreciated the nursing staff.
QUESTION: Now why consider relocating?
In answering this question, Mary first found it necessary to
share more about her family. Did I know that she was the eldest
of nine children and of those nine children there were 3 sets of
twins? Mary went on to share how she grew up in Kidron, Ohio,
and spent some special years in Harrisonburg, Virginia, getting
her college degree. Today a dear uncle and aunt of hers still live
in Harrisonburg. As Mary continues to talk of family it becomes
a travelogue to Florida, Indiana, Delaware, and Joplin, Missouri.
One sees a pattern of states east and here Mary is in Kansas. Another
pause and then Mary talks of her sister in Florida diagnosed with termi-
Continued on page 4
Page 4
Continued from page 3
nal cancer. It’s obvious that Mary feels called there and knows she will
be spending part of this coming winter in Florida attending her sister.
It’s time to relocate to an area where these trips are much shorter. The
relocation will be to Harrisonburg, Virginia.
QUESTION: Mary, what about your involvements here in Pine Village
and the larger community?
Resident Highlights
By Shelby Shaw
Mabel Goering -
Independent Living
Mabel Goering and her husband,
Reuben, moved to Pine
Village in 1994. Both had grown
up in Moundridge, but had lived
in Phoenix, Arizona, the prior 29
years. Reuben was a teacher and
had taught at Buhler, and then decided
to teach at the college level,
so that took the family to Arizona.
Mabel said they had just decided
to come home and it was a good decision. Reuben passed away
in 1997, but Mabel has remained active on campus. She said
her favorite part about living here is the people. Being a people
person, she was asked to deliver mail every Monday, which is
something she thoroughly enjoys as she gets to visit and know
everyone.
Not only does Mabel enjoy people, but she also loves to entertain,
cook and bake. Mabel said some of the best times in her
life include bus trips they took with friends to Canada, Montana
and other locations about every other year.
Mabel has four children, six grandchildren and six great
grandchildren. She prides herself in being nicknamed the “Hugging
Grandma.” The grandkids also nicknamed her “Hot Rod
Mabel” after riding in the car…and shopping cart….a few times,
Mabel said with a laugh.
Mabel’s advice for others is to stay active and social –
“Whatever we do each day we honor God by our efforts to do it
in love.”
Doris Cherry – Assisted Living
Doris Cherry grew up in Macomb,
Oklahoma, but has been in
Kansas since 1954 when she married
her husband, Benny. Doris
has been a resident of Pine Village
since 2005 and she says it’s
the best decision she could have
made. Her favorite part about living
here is the people; there is always
someone to visit with. Doris
used to crochet in her spare time
and says she’d like to take it up again.
Doris and Benny were married for 50 wonderful years.
They have five children and seven grandchildren. Some of Doris’s
fondest memories include a trip to Branson, Mo., after she
was married. Also, Doris and Benny had a fifth wheel camper
which they traveled with and very much enjoyed.
Marie Wedel –
Memory Lane
Marie Wedel is originally
from Arlington,
Kansas, and has been
at Pine Village since
2005. Her favorite part
about living here is all
the friendly people. Marie
used to quilt, play
Bridge and dominos and
always had a flower garden
her daughter, Kay
McNabb, said. Marie
still does enjoy walking
and likes to look at the flowers in the Memory Lane courtyard.
Marie did enjoy traveling when time allowed and has fond
memories of trips to Florida, Niagara Falls, Colorado, and Montana,
just to name a few. Marie was primarily a homemaker,
raising three children, Ken, Kay and Keith. However, she did
work a few jobs here and there including being a nurses aid at
Memorial Home.
God and family have always been very important to Marie.
She has seven siblings and in addition to her three children, she
has four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Bob Stewart – Health Care
Bob Stewart, who calls Parsons,
Kansas, home, has been a resident of
The Neighborhoods since October
2010. His favorite part about living
at Pine Village he says is that everything
he needs is here: food, medical
supplies, and there are always people
to visit and joke with. Bob enjoys
playing golf, dominos and cards.
A sports enthusiast, he was a
sports writer for the Wichita Eagle
from 1968-1978. He mainly covered
drag racing and bowling. In 1972 he
was honored for his coverage of drag
racing by receiving an award from the National Hot Rod Association
and again in 1973 by being named Who’s Who in Auto
Racing.
After his tenure at The Eagle, he went to truck driving
school and traveled the country hauling freight until retiring
three years ago. Bob said that while the two jobs were completely
different he really enjoyed both of them.
Advice that Bob would pass on to others is that it’s important
to laugh and have a good time in life. He loves to joke with
people and he said there’s no need to take life too serious!

Vacation Bible School
By Dennis Huxman
Vacation Bible School was held
for the first time this year at Pine Village
July 25-29.
There was an average of 97.6
kids enrolled in Daily Vacation Bible
School (DVBS) with the highest enrollment
being 104 kids on Wednesday
evening. There were 62 teachers
and helpers including 15 men who
volunteered to help as a result of
Bible School being changed from morning
to evening. Outside of pre-school and 5th
and 6th graders there were 5 different age
groups. These 5 groups rotated around five
stations: Bible Story, Movie, Snacks, Crafts
and Games.
The 5th and 6th graders had their own
program which involved interaction with
the residents Tuesday evening as they went
from room to room and read Psalms 23.
The next day staff heard how the residents
so very much appreciated this interaction.
Friday evening the students interacted with
the residents in prayer time. As the evening
sessions continued residents would
drop out retiring to their rooms, however
there were those few stalwart residents who
stayed with it from 6:15-9:00 p.m. nightly.
This was the first year that Bible School
was open to adults. The first night attendance
was 35 adults. The adults met in the
Krehbiel Apartment Commons. D.V.B.S.
closed with a program Sunday morning in
the Wellness Center. The house was full
with 195 chairs set up plus 20 residents in
wheelchairs. The children sat on the floor.
Following the program hamburgers and hotdogs
were served to all.
CNA Week Celebrated
at Pine Village
Laura Erb and Jessica Timm
Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA)
Week was celebrated June 16-23 and began
with a “get to know your co-worker” game.
Some were surprised to find out some details
they didn’t know about the people they work
with everyday.
Wednesday was “Game Day,” which was
loosely related to the contests on the TV show
“Minute to Win It.” Games included moving
M & M candies with a soda straw and sorting
them by color, stacking nuts on a table with
just a rod for a tool, using safety pins with
just one hand, and puzzles made from cereal
boxes. Small prizes were awarded.
The week was rounded out with pizza for
CNAs and staff.
CNAs are a vital part of the caring team
at Pine Village.
