26 A Message from the president The world right now is a tumultuous place presenting political, moral and economic challenges to individuals and organizations alike. It makes me think about the warnings given some years ago by Alvin Toffler in his best-selling book titled “Future Shock.” Toffler said that, on a worldwide scale, we should anticipate enormous anxiety and accelerating change, and we would have to work extremely hard to become adaptable and properly balanced. At Fontbonne, our response to these challenges has been to adopt a “Yes We Can” attitude. This is evident by the successful collaboration of our faculty, students, staff and administration. This attitude is also bolstered by the ongoing support of our alumni, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and our most generous benefactors. I thank you, one and all. During the past academic year, the frontiers of knowledge have been expanded through both internships and experiential learning. Students had opportunities to engage and demonstrate competencies and moral courage in the greater St. Louis area, as well as in international settings such as Belize and Mexico. In early summer 2012, a group of 30 will travel to Limuru, Kenya, to care for children in orphanages and classrooms who are victims of poverty, abuse, HIV/AIDS and neglect. Looking to the future, I am deeply grateful to each of you who continue to think about, pray for and support Fontbonne. Together, we form the “Yes We Can” Fontbonne family, a family that is destined to thrive well into the future. Respectfully and sincerely yours, Dennis C. Golden A Message from the board chair In my position as board chair, I am privileged to meet and interact with a wide variety of people within the Fontbonne community — students, alumni, faculty, staff, leadership and friends of the university included. The individuals who comprise these constituencies, I believe, are Fontbonne’s greatest assets. And all of them come together to create the culture of academic excellence for which Fontbonne is known. This past year, the incoming class of 2015 has brought an increased level of energy to an already enthusiastic student body. Our adult students working toward both undergraduate and graduate degrees embody professionalism and represent Fontbonne well in the St. Louis business community. Faculty members passionately continue to guide our students as they become leaders dedicated to serving a world in need. Our administration strives for success, guiding the direction of the university in alignment with the mission and vision set forth by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. We are continually grateful to and inspired by our alumni and benefactors who are so committed to our students. Your continued support, whether through time, talent or treasure, serves as the foundation of the university. As we move into 2012, in spite of global economic challenges, we know that Fontbonne has the solid leadership, moral compass and support system in place to carry us into a bright future. We are blessed to have such dedicated leadership, faculty, staff, students, alumni, benefactors and friends of the university. Thank you for your continued support, Joseph B. McGlynn Jr. 27
