with<strong>in</strong> the overall vehicle concept<br />
The image of the automobile is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly be<strong>in</strong>g dom<strong>in</strong>ated by the design<br />
of the car body. In many vehicle classes, the car body – <strong>in</strong> addition to marque,<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>e and drive – <strong>in</strong>directly plays a key role <strong>in</strong> purchas<strong>in</strong>g decisions. For, the<br />
car body is the primary means by which the eng<strong>in</strong>eers implement the design of<br />
the vehicle. It can also account for 50 percent and more of total captive production<br />
costs. Transport function aside, stricter demands on design, comfort, speed,<br />
stability, safety and availability 24/7 rema<strong>in</strong> a constant challenge <strong>in</strong> the development<br />
and production process.<br />
This process by which the automobile is adapt<strong>in</strong>g to the grow<strong>in</strong>g importance<br />
of the car body is far from complete. Because <strong>in</strong> many market segments,<br />
the trend towards greater <strong>in</strong>-car functionality and larger vehicle dimensions<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ues unabated. It is important to reverse this “natural” upward weight<br />
spiral. Highly efficient lightweight designs utiliz<strong>in</strong>g modern materials are<br />
essential to the car body of the future.<br />
Given this ambitious objective, the question arises as to what extent and when<br />
will vehicles have to become lighter. The answer will depend on how lightweight<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g costs develop, and the extent to which efficiency ga<strong>in</strong>s can be made<br />
<strong>in</strong> other areas. “<strong>Strategies</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Car</strong> <strong>Body</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>2013</strong>” aga<strong>in</strong> affords the first<br />
and most important opportunity <strong>in</strong> the new year – after Euro<strong>Car</strong><strong>Body</strong> – to discuss<br />
these key issues and to validate solutions.<br />
