The car body and its challenges
within the overall vehicle concept
The image of the automobile is increasingly being dominated by the design
of the car body. In many vehicle classes, the car body – in addition to marque,
engine and drive – indirectly plays a key role in purchasing decisions. For, the
car body is the primary means by which the engineers implement the design of
the vehicle. It can also account for 50 percent and more of total captive production
costs. Transport function aside, stricter demands on design, comfort, speed,
stability, safety and availability 24/7 remain a constant challenge in the development
and production process.
This process by which the automobile is adapting to the growing importance
of the car body is far from complete. Because in many market segments,
the trend towards greater in-car functionality and larger vehicle dimensions
continues unabated. It is important to reverse this “natural” upward weight
spiral. Highly efficient lightweight designs utilizing modern materials are
essential to the car body of the future.
Given this ambitious objective, the question arises as to what extent and when
will vehicles have to become lighter. The answer will depend on how lightweight
engineering costs develop, and the extent to which efficiency gains can be made
in other areas. “Strategies in Car Body Engineering 2013” again affords the first
and most important opportunity in the new year – after EuroCarBody – to discuss
these key issues and to validate solutions.
Featuring presentations on the latest series-production car body models,
critical progress reports by major OEMs and systems suppliers, and intensive discussions,
and with international experts in car body engineering in attendance,
the conference will ultimately be seeking viable answers to the question: How will
the car body of tomorrow fit into the strategy for the overall vehicle concept?
