Professor Gautam Barua
Director, IIT Guwahati
IIT Guwahati is one of the leading technical institutions of the country. The
student strength is just over 4400 in August 2012. Currently there are 310
faculty. About 570 papers were published in journals and about 580 were
presented in conferences in 2011-12. The number of PhD students on campus
is nearly 1000. There are more than 350 sponsored projects being undertaken
at present. There is therefore a strong R&D atmosphere in the Institute.
This enhances the teaching process.
IIT Guwahati is committed to excellence in all spheres of its activities. It is
conscious that the brand IIT sustains itself mainly due to this commitment to
excellence. We always strive to do better. The students graduating from this
institute are all very bright. They have entered the institute by proving them
selves in their earlier place of learning and by successfully competing with
their peers.
Our institute provides them quality education both in the classroom, and
outside it. We have extensive facilities for sports and cultural activities. We
know we have to mould the bright minds so that they can tackle the
challenges of nature, of society, and of the marketplace. Our emphasis is on
education, rather than training. So prospective employers may find that a
particular student is not up-to-step with some new technology or methodology
but they should also assess if the student's fundamentals are strong or not.
If the answer is yes, than he or she will be able to pick up the necessary
details without any problems. We are also aware that there is scope for
improving the soft skills of students. We are doing what we can. At the
same time, we must recognize that since the students are bright, they
upgrade these skills very fast while on the job.
I invite all prospective employers of our students to visit IIT Guwahati and
to participate in the on-campus placement process.
2 Placement Brochure (2012-13), Department of Humanities and Social Sciences
Professor Rohini Mokashi-Punekar
Head, Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences
The Programme MA (Development Studies) was launched in the Department of
HSS at IIT Guwahati to provide the nation with a pool of social scientists, who
with their strong theoretical background in the economic growth and development,
sociological and environmental issues and contemporary social concerns
will be able to better tackle and analyze the plethora of socioeconomic complexities
in India.
Nehru’s message which he wrote in the foreword of social welfare of India
(1955) “that welfare must be the common property of everyone in India and not
the monopoly of the privileged group as it is today” is still relevant in the 21st
century. We believe only high quality human resources with interdisciplinary
knowledge will be able to foster a balance between economic growth and human
welfare.
Our interdisciplinary course equips our students not only with knowledge in
core areas pertaining to development but also research skills and innovative
thinking that will enable them to interpret development from a multidimensional
perspective.
On behalf of the department, I take pleasure in inviting you to participate in the
placement at the campus.
WHY IITG?
Established in 1994, as an ‘Institute of National Importance’, IIT Guwahati has
since then grown into being a preferred destination for people passionate about
learning and innovation.
The programmes and courses that are offered at IIT Guwahati are perpetually
evolving to adapt to the ever changing global requirements and along with the
diversity of the fields of study, this has helped the institute become one of the
nation’s nerve centres for research and development, and technical education.
The faculty besides doing world class research ensure that the students of the
campus are ready to face the challenges of the professional world by providing
them with a sound conceptual understanding of their respective disciplines, and
also by playing a huge role in their development as individuals who can lead
and lead well. The institute also offers a plethora of opportunities to students for
their holistic development, through the excellent facilities that it has for sports
and general extracurricular activities.
All of this has helped IIT Guwahati produce students who are well prepared to
strive for professional excellence, and this is made evident by the institute’s
impressive placement records.
The batch of 2012-13 truly reflects IIT Guwahati’s strengths which among
many include-versatility, innovation, a keen interest in learning, and being able
PLACEMENT PROCEDURE
IIT Guwahati Placement Cell follows a simple and transparent placement policy. Organizations are invited via email,
telephone calls and faxes.
Phase 1:
■ Organizations register on our placement portal. : https://auto.iitg.ernet.in/placement/. They are given a
username and password from the Placement Cell for their account on the portal.
■ On this account, organizations must fill out details under the ‘Edit Job Application Form’ and the ‘Job Profile and
Salary’ tabs where they are required to provide us with a detailed salary structure with base salary, perks, emoluments
and other remuneration clearly and separately mentioned and information pertaining to the Job Profiles
being offered. (Detailed instructions may be found on the portal itself)
■ Suitable dates for a Pre-Placement Talk (PPT) are decided as per mutual convenience. PPTs are held after class
hours (i.e. after 5 PM).
Phase 2:
■ The recruitment session would begin on the 1st of December 2012 and would continue till May 2013.
■ Dates for visiting the campus for recruitment are allotted to the organizations based on several parameters but
this is mostly dependent on the interest shown by both the organization and the candidates and other factors
which include the CTC being offered.
■ The organization can negotiate or confirm the date with the placement cell. A compromise formula is worked
out by the placement cell if there is a clash in interest/dates.
Phase 3:
■ Organizations visit the campus on the decided date and can conduct written technical/aptitude tests, group discussions,
interviews as part of their selection procedure.
■ Organizations have to furnish the list of selected candidates as soon as possible after the completion of the selection
procedure. As per the placement policies of the institute as soon as a student has been offered a job, he
or she is ineligible to continue in the selection processes of other organizations or apply to other organizations.
■ Job offers are to be routed only through the placement cell. Organizations are requested not to contact students
directly.
FAQs
How well is Guwahati connected with the rest of the country?
Ans. Guwahati, which is the gateway for Northeast India, is well connected by air, rail and road with the rest of the country. There are direct air
services from/to Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata with connectivity to all major cities in the country and direct train services from/to all the me-
tropolises and other major cities.
How do we reach the institute?
Ans. The institute is a 45 minute drive from the airport and prepaid taxis can be availed of directly at the airport. Depending on the available
transport resources the placement cell has at hand and provided the visiting company intimates the placement cell about its schedule for arrival
and stay on the campus, transport could be provided to the delegates from the company. The institute also has a bus service with buses plying
from the institute to the city center and back at regular intervals.
Where will we be accommodated ?
Ans. Subject to availability of rooms in the institute guest house, accommodation could be arranged at a nominal rate for delegates from a company
if they do intimate their requirements to us well in advance.
When does the placement session begin and for how long does it continue ?
Ans. The Placement Session would begin on the 1st of December 2012 and continue till May 2013. Companies are encouraged to visit the campus
before the placement session begins to give Pre-Placement Talks to our students and introduce them to the job profiles and job culture of
their company. This does have a direct bearing on the interest shown by students when the company visits the campus later for placements.
We are under the impression that we can recruit students only if their discipline is related our Industry. Is this so ?
Ans. No, the institute imposes no restrictions in this regard. Companies can opt to recruit students from any department or discipline.
