PacWest Pre-Entry Deadline July 1 The pre-entry deadline for PacWest’s Barrel Nation Tour in Ardmore, OK is next Thursday, July 1. If you wish to be placed in the pre-entry draw, avoid the late fee, and check in without waiting in a line, get your entries in. You may enter either by mail or, if using a credit card, by fax or online at FastEnter.com. The race has a Nofee $1000-added Thursday Warm-up Race, a $20,000-added Main Open Race, a $5000-added 2D Futurity, and a $1500-added Youth Challenge Race. If you have to or like to late enter, the late entry fee is just $20 per rider for the weekend ($50 per entry for the Futurity). As always, we’ll be taking entries during the race and PacWest members get a 50% discount on processing and late fees. Kicking Up Dust with the Joseys By Tammy Randall for Josey Ranch Marshall, Texas June 26, 2010 -- If you are in anyway involved with horses, you will be lost for words when you drive through the gates at the Josey Ranch in Marshall, Texas. Located on the outskirts of Marshall in east Texas, the 200+ acre ranch is a barrel racer’s dream. This is the place to learn everything there is about barrel racing and/or roping and how to care for your horse. The fi rst school at the Josey Ranch started in 1967 and had thirtythree students in attendance. The cost then was $100 and the clinic lasted two weeks. Meals, stalls, and horse feed were all included in the tuition. In 2010, things have changed some, with eighty-six showing up this year for training that will make each and every one a better rider and a more knowledgeable competitor. They came from Arkansas, Alabama, Arizona, Minnesota, Oregon, Georgia, California, Ohio, New Mexico, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Illinois, and of course, Texas. What an impact, a huge infl ux of energetic, excited folks have had on a small town like Marshall for the past forty-three years. It is a time each year that all of Marshall Texas enjoys. Riders come to Josey’s Ranch knowing that Martha and R.E. Josey have one goal in their minds and in the minds of their outstand- ing staff. That goal is to teach and inspire them all to do best what they love to do. They will receive instruction and know-how that only the Josey Ranch can give. It is safe to say that not many instructors have infl uenced people as much as Martha and R.E. They are role models for countless students, old and young. Each student who pulls into Josey Land, USA for the fi rst time is amazed at the layout and all that the Ranch has to offer. The Joseys have unrivaled expertise in their abilities and are enjoying passing those skills and knowledge on to others through their clinics and schools. They are both in Texas Rodeo’s Hall of Fame, Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, and the Ark-La-Tex Sports Museum, and Martha is in the Cowgirl Hall of Fame. Their school and clinics have top instructors. They love to win, and they know all the ins and outs of teaching others to do the same. The Josey Ranch just wrapped up their seven day barrel racing school and camp on Saturday, June 26. It was a week fi lled with excitement for all ages. Although the youngest student at the camp was age eight, the average age to attend the schools is between twelve and twenty, but it’s common to see many in their 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. In barrel racing, there is no age limit. Anyone with the desire to barrel race will be successful at the Ranch. What each will learn from the Joseys is to be the best competitor they can be. Team Josey Instructors who consist of Ty Mitchell, Gary Arthur and Chris Martin will journey to Minnesota, Utah, Missouri, California, Florida, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Kentucky to give barrel racing clinics the remainder of the year. The Josey’s won’t be stopping any time soon; Martha has been selected as the WBRC Youth Team Captain in the North American Barrel Racing Challenge. Josey Barrel Racing Schools are talked about worldwide and have former students from countries such as France, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Australia and this spring hosted a student from Beijing, China. Martha and R.E. keep these students busy on and off their horses. When asked what time the school hours were, R.E. said, “From can to can’t each day.” There is not much down time at the Josey Ranch. The previous week a three day clinic was held and two students from Hawaii attended, Emmy and Tiare Ilgen with their father Tony, who is a veterinarian. People come back year after year. The Boudreaux family attended clinics in the 1980’s with their sixteen year old daughter, Robin. Following her death in a tragic car accident in 1989, they eventually adopted three children and this year came back with their grandson, Andrew. Cheyenne Harper, son of Debbie Harper, former student and NFR qualifi er, and grandson of James Harper attended the Calf Roping Clinic for many years and has now been an instructor for the past three years. At the end of Josey’s Roping School this year, he won second at the Coleman, Texas PRCA Rodeo. JB Creating Legends Sale Deadline July 31 The consignment deadline for the 2nd Annual JB Quarter Horses Creating Legends Sale, scheduled for November 13 at the Heart O’ Texas Complex in Waco, Texas, is July 31. This year’s sale is open to 80 head. The inaugural sale saw 52 of 62 head sell for $401,500. The sale averaged above the barrel racing industry’s national sales average, coming in at $7,722. Of the Top 10 barrel horse prospects sold at auction in 2009, two came from the JB Quarter Horses Creating Legends Sale, making it second only to the Myers Production Sale in number of Top 10 High Sellers. Last year’s sale drew all manner of buyers from international competitors and former National Finals Rodeo contestants to the traditional futurity crowd and divisional barrel racers looking for advanced horsepower. Once again, the sale will be held in conjunction with the $25,000-added JB Quarter Horses Futurity, for 5-year-olds and under, and the Elite Barrel Racing Productions’ Guaranteed Open 6D. Information on the barrel races will be coming soon. All consignments must be faxed or postmarked no later than July 31 to be considered. Final selection from the consignments will be made in early August.
