Reno Champions Crowned
RENO, Nev - June 27, 2010 -- Winning a pair of championship
spurs from the Reno Rodeo can do a lot for any rodeo contestant’s
resume. Two of the 2010 champions have been lucky enough to
win them more than once.
Kory Koontz, from Sudan, Texas, won his third pair here on
Saturday night. The veteran team roper won his fi rst pair in 1996
roping with Matt Tyler, and his second in 2002 roping with Daniel
Green. This year he did the heeling for Colby Lovell from Madisonville,
Texas. They stopped the clock in 16 seconds and were the high
money winners at the rodeo with $14,786 each.
Prior to tonight’s rodeo, Koontz was ranked 24th in the Professional
Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Hea nearly doubled his
2010 earnings with what he won here and put himself in position
to qualify for his 15th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR).
Lovell was ranked 18th. The top 15 in the world make the trip to
Las Vegas to compete at the WNFR for world championships next
December.
Rodeo contestants that win here will use the momentum and
confi dence they gained as they head into the lucrative Fourth Of
July run. Known as Cowboy Christmas, more money is available in
the next week at rodeos across the United States than at any other
time of year.
Josh Peek has been chasing all-around dreams since he joined the
PRCA in 2002. He won the all-around and tie-down roping titles
here in 2008. This year, he fi nished seventh in the tie-down roping,
earned a check in steer wrestling and got his second all-around
championship here.
Gabe LeDoux from Kaplan, La., won the steer wrestling and
$13,624. LeDoux won the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in
Denver last January and was in pursuit of his second WNFR qualifi
cation. In March, at Rodeo Houston, he broke his foot and found
himself on the injured reserve list.
In 2009, he missed qualifying for the WNFR by just one spot.
The money that he won here will move him into the top fi ve in the
world standings.
The Reno Rodeo is part of the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour
presented by Justin Boots. The Final Round will air on In Country
Television (broadcast on DISH Network 230 and DIRECTV 344)
at 8 p.m. (ET) July 10. Check local listings for re-air dates.
Potter, at 75, Still Winning Checks
There is no listed record for the oldest competitor to earn a check
in a PRCA rodeo. Let’s just say Mel Potter is in the discussion. Potter,
of Marana, Ariz., teamed with Garrison Dixon to place sixth at
the June 24-26 Western Fest Stampede in Granite Falls, Minn., and
tied for fourth at the Buffalo (Minn.) Championship PRCA Rodeo
at the age of 75 years, fi ve months, 24 days. Potter qualifi ed as a tiedown
roper at the fi rst National Finals Rodeo in 1959 and qualifi ed
for the Dodge Great Lakes Circuit Finals Rodeo as recently as the
2008 season, competing in the team roping with his grandson, Roy
Alexander.
Gelding Works for Smartest Horse World Record
Lukas, a 17-year-old Thoroughbred gelding who stands 16.2
hands, may well be the smartest horse in the country--maybe the
world, and owner-trainer Karen Murdock is trying to get him into
the Guinness World Records for “Most numbers identifi ed by a
horse in one minute.”
On June 16, Lukas was able to identify a correct number at least
18 times.
“The counter said 20, but I think he skimmed two of them,” said
Murdock of Southern California. “I don’t know how stringent the
Guinness World Records will be. He got between 18-20 correct,
which is about average for him.”
Lukas has been listed on Yahoo, Google and the World Records
Academy as “The World’s Smartest Horse.” He counts, spells, identifi
es shapes, discriminates colors and grasps the concepts of same/
different, proportion and absentness, she said.
She was not allowed to praise him, pet him, encourage him or
touch him. “The guidelines were specifi c in that there could be no
pointing or touching, no extra words,” she said.
Murdock doesn’t know when Guinness will make its decision, but
she is happy that the record-keepers are even considering Lukas.
Until now, animal records have had to do with the physical attributes
- tallest, shortest, longest tail, etc.
record speaks for itself. It
is time for Perky to go to a
