This awareness week provides an
opportunity to acknowledge the loss of
babies at any gestation of pregnancy, raise
awareness for the needs of grieving parents
whose loss impacts the rest of their lives;
and thank the health professionals for their
dedication, compassion and commitment
to providing an excellent service at National
Women’s as well as those involved with the
support services in the community such as
SANDS, October 15th Working group,
Miscarriage Support, Twin Loss and
Parentcare.
The Story below is kindly shared by a mother called Claire, whose loss of three
babies has led her to work closely with other bereaved parents. Claire has
developed a passion to raise the awareness of grieving parents’ needs and how
support services can meet these needs.
Grief, for me, is a mixture of heartache, loneliness and desperate confusion washing over me,
in waves of various heights, since the deaths of our babies, Isabel, Phoebe and Daniel. Everyday
their father and I talk of them and love them. They were not with us for a great amount of
time but they will always be our children.
There are no time restrictions to grieving. All bereaved parents and families need compassionate
care at the time of their precious baby’s birth and continued support after their death.
Baby loss & grief are different for everyone. I have found, through going to SANDS support
groups, that my emotions are not entirely unique. With understanding and support I have
begun to learn to live with my grief.
Feeling that our babies are remembered is vital. A simple way to help parents do this can be
to say baby’s name aloud. In general, avoiding mentioning a baby who has died is not protecting
the parents from further pain; quite the opposite.
Baby Loss Awareness Week is a time to remember all babies who have died, their parents,
families and those who provide continued support for them.
ADHB Strategic Plan
(a member of SANDS Auckland Inc.)
Charge midwife Julie Arthur reiterates the emphasis on the importance of the
availability of ongoing counselling for women and their families. “There is a need
to share, talk and walk with someone through your grief journey, enabling
acknowledgement of loss, healthy grieving and a future with hope.”
highly trained trainers that deliver well rounded, refined, and proven material. With
the knowledge you gain from this training comes the power to be more effective
and safer in your workplace. If you would like additional information please visit
ORBIT WELCOME TO THE TRAVEL REMEDY
Eddie Teokoitu, a new addition to the team at Orbit Corporate Travel takes us through a New Years in Melbourne.
Part One: Melbourne for New Years anyone……..I think so!!!
Hustle & bustle toil & trouble……Me and
three friends (Kash, Cushla and Andrea)
hit Melbourne.
It was clear that we landed at the
Melbourne Airport because as soon as
the aircraft doors opened we were
greeted with a less then desirable humid
31 degrees. “Unbelievable”.
Taking our Auckland wears off and
slipping into swimmers was definitely on
the “To Do List”, but somehow making
sure there were no breakages to our
duty free bottles seemed more important.
Our stay was at the Saville Park Suites,
333 Exhibition Street, very relaxed and
modern, with air-conditioned suites
featuring huge open plan dining and
living areas and a small balcony.
The view looked back away from the city
but we didn’t care. Hotel facilities included
a restaurant and cocktail bar, indoor
heated pool and sauna. Saville Park also
has a 24 hour reception and 24 hour
foreign exchange desk. Certainly what
you would expect at a four star hotel.
We were also lucky enough to have lots
of other young funky tourists staying in
the hotel so being neighbourly; we shot
down to the pool with offerings of endless
cocktails.
The next day was New Year’s Eve. 34
degrees was the expected high and
Melbourne delivered. We wanted to stay
V
in our air-conditioned haven but the call
for retail shopping was just too strong.
The free tram takes you all over the
CBD...That’s right, free...Melbourne rocks.
Anything you want is in Melbourne.
There’s even a shop called “Four floors
of shoes”. There’s several massive
shopping centres with one in particular
that is housed in 4 -5 separate buildings.
We loved Myer.
What I especially liked was clothes stores
for men. No-longer are we limited to
singlets, stubbies and jandles, sporting
the latest mullet…..no, times have
changed! Now we have the freedom to
pick and choose. Yes, a Ben Sherman
slim cut shirt with French cuffs matched
with boot leg cut flat front pants, dirty
brown cow-boy boots and black Gucci
sunglasses…Yes, we men can be
fashionable too. Now, if I had bought
that stuff it would’ve been very expensive,
so luckily sticking to a budget and opting
for a tank-top and three quarter pants
from Target did this kiwi just fine.
Night life in Melbourne was filled with
colour, surprise and culture. Along the
Yarra River were fireworks that reflected
off the water and nearby buildings. Music
and song was heard from all around.
The count-down wasn’t so far away now
and we wanted to be right in the thick of
it…
To be continued
