Miss Dance of Great Britain, Dance Master UK
and The International Ballet Championships 2012
“the smell of the greasepaint, the roar of the
crowd”…I don’t really think there is a better way to
describe the wonder of the amazing spectacle of
sunday June 10th at this years miss Dance, Dance
master and International ballet Championship 2012,
now in its 37th year.
I arrived at the Opera House, blackpool at 8.45
am to a fairly quiet and calm atmosphere but
naturally you could sense the nerves in the air as
the first competitors began to sign in. Family and
friends said their farewells and wished their loved
ones all the luck in the world as it was announced
that they were able to enter the theatre and
begin preparations for the day ahead. Once all of
the music had been handed in, the competitors
returned to their allocated dressing rooms and then
to the stage to get ready for the rehearsal of the
Opening Ceremony.
Whilst they rehearsed what was to be an amazing
Opening Ceremony with an excellent choice of
music that really did build the excitement and get
the day off to an amazing start, flowers and gifts
kept arriving for the truly talented dancers present.
by 12.00pm the foyer was buzzing with an
assortment of excitement and nerves and by
12.30pm the first announcement came from
compere barry Northall who did a wonderful job
of clearly announcing both the adjudicators and
competitors throughout the day. You actually
wondered if fireworks would start to ignite in
the auditorium from the electric and magical
atmosphere.
the diversity of the music, choreography and
costumes were a credit not only to the competitors
but also the talented teachers who continually
come up with fresh ideas to inspire and bring out
the best in their students.
After the announcement of the miss Dance
semi Finalists, we were then treated to the
joy of watching the Junior and senior ballet
Championships, which were adjudicated by Wayne
sleep. I thought that Duncan and his team on sound
and lights did a fantastic job throughout the day,
but I really did love the ambience and completely
different mood his team achieved throughout the
ballet performances. When all of the Juniors and
seniors had danced, they were presented with roses
before the results were announced and the awards
were presented to Leah Derby for Junior Champion
and melissa braithwaite for senior Champion.
Jacey Waddington
the three adjudicators from the earlier heats,
Yvonne Goût, Linda Cook and Loretta Legge were
then joined by Wayne sleep and Allison Coyne
as the thirteen semi Finalists danced again. the
audience went wild as Dance master commenced.
Whilst there were only 8 competitors in this section
the atmosphere from the audience stepped up
another notch and they were both thrilled and
delighted to see performances from them filled
with athleticism, style and passion.
the miss Dance finalists were announced and after
a short interval the final 6 danced for the last time
that day, giving everything they possibly had. You
had to wonder how after such a long day they
managed to find that ‘extra something’ to wow us
with yet again.
Whilst the adjudicators made their final decision
and the marks were collated, an outstanding
performance by Xs Latin was presented. they are
one of the most successful formation teams in
the UK and are coached by David mallabone. they
danced a fantastic arrangement to a medley of
meatloaf’s music. the ladies wore stunning red bat
sleeved sequined dresses that complimented to
choreography, showing lovely patterns, shapes and
synchronicity.
Just before the presentation and the results for
miss Dance and Dance master 2012, miss silvester
welcomed to the stage bethany Whittle, miss
Dance 2011 and rio samuels, Dance master 2011.
It was so lovely to hear that their sponsorship last
year had been put to such good and sensible use
and they are doing well in their careers.
the miss Dance and Dance master Finalists were
welcomed onto the stage for the last time to
rapturous applause.
miss silvester thanked her team of 100+ volunteers
for their tireless work and dedication provided to
bring the entire event together. she brought onto
the stage the organizing committee- Linda Lister,
betty Chapelle, Catherine shepherd and sharon
berry. miss Goût then thanked miss silvester and
her entire team for such a well organized day and
invited onto the stage the other adjudicators to
present the awards to the 2012 winners.
Finally, the moment came that we had all been
waiting for….the John Dilworth Award, the founder
of this very special event, which was awarded to
Courtney George. eleanor Claire presented the
bursary Award for promising vocal talent, donated in the memory of her mother ros Wick to rosanna bates.
the winner of Dance master UK, stephen Garrity was announced to a thunderous applause and then the final
moment where I thought the roof of the Opera House was about to be blown off by screams of excitement
and applause…miss Dance of Great britain 2012, Lucie Horsfall.
Congratulations of course to the winners of 2012 but also to all of the competitors who took part in the day
that I hope will be a truly memorable and lifelong experience. Whether you have won or not this year, I hope
you left knowing you have danced on the stage of one of the most famous theatres in the country. Life as a
performer requires belief, hard work, dedication and lots of support from your friends and families. Hopefully
you will one day achieve all of your dreams and dance professionally to your hearts content.
trust me, it is all worth it in the end!
