THE NCAA NEWS/March 11.1992 Vermont cross countrv skiers come through for title Vermont saved its best until last, scoring well in both the men’s and women’s diagonal cross country events on the final day of competi- tion to win its third NCAA National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Ski- ing Championships team title in four years. The Catamounts, trailing New Mexico by 10 points going into the last day, captured the individual championship in the men’s diagonal on Trend Nystad’s 57: 17.6 perform- ance and scored well enough in the women’s event to hold off the Lobos for a 693.5 to 642.5 margin. “It was an amazing championship.“Vermont coach Chip LaCasse said. “No team from the West came in dominating, which produced the most balanced meet 1 have ever seen.” Only I5 points separated the top four teams after three days of com- petition. Colorado, the defending champion, was only 41/z points behind Vermont, and Wyoming trailed Colorado by only half a point. Utah, fifth after the third day, finished the meet in third place, and Dartmouth moved from sixth to fourth place on the final day. Other national champions for Vermont were Sally Knight in the women’s giant slalom and Einar Bohmer in the men’s slalom. Utah’s Kristen Vestgren won the women’s diagonal cross country event and the IJtes’ Katja Lesjak won the women’s slalom. Annette Skjoldcn, in the women’s freestyle event, was Colorado’s lone national champion. Wyoming’s Bernie LaFleur was a surprise winner in the men’s freestyle cross country event. TEAM RESULTS I. Raphael Wilson (top) of Augustana (Illinois) defeated Brockport State’s Chris Stevens at 134poundq but Stevens and five of his teammates eamedall-America honors in leading Brockport State to its first Division Ill wrestling title. Wilson was named one of the meet’s two outstanding wrestlers. Brockport State’s six all-Americans lead wav to Division III wrestling title J Behind the strength of six aIlL Americans. Brockport State won its fifth Division 111 Wrestling Cham- pionships team title March 6-7. Brockport State outdistanced de- lending champion Augsburg, 76% points to 62% points. Host Trenton State finished third with 54 points. Brian Quick was Brockport State’s lone individual champion, winning the 190-pound weight class with a S-3 decision over Kon Welch of Cortland State. Chris Stcvcns finished second for Brockport State in the l?&pound class. Brockport State had scvcn indiL vidual qualifiers, six of whom placed in the top five in their rcspectivc weight classes. No xhool had more than one individual champion in the IO weight classes.
