Welcomes new ventures, honors the successful The introduction of five new pilot programs, orientation for new sponsoring institutions, a new workshop format designed for veteran personnel of sponsoring institutions and talks by government dignitaries high- lighted the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) National Workshop February 27-29 in Washington, D.C. This summer, one of the pilot programs that will be tested will link five NYSP sponsoring institutions to the NCAA national office for the first time, enabling the institutions to send completed forms to the national office. Computers also will be used in the evaluation process this year, freeing up eval- uators to assess program components on-site. USA Today is sponsoring another pilot program in an attempt to develop a modern teaching style on issues relevant to the NY SP target population. The Professional Golfers Association has pilot-program plans also. as does the United States Tennis Association. The PGA plans to distribute printed curricula and provide train- ing and equipment to live NYSP sites, and the USTA plans to train NYSP professional staff on a national basis. The workshop also gave the 2X institutions that will sponsor NYSP for the first time this summer the opportunity to meet with veteran NYSP admmistrators, some of whom have been conducting the program for 25 years. Wilson spoke on the minority male initiative program, which he directs. youth programs, said that having sponsoring institutions from both ends of the experience spectrum made the orientation a success. In past workshops, the program for veteran NYSP institutions was strictly regimented. ‘This year, institutional representatives were able to select from IS specialitrd roundtable presentations on various topics, a feature Thiebe said was well-received. Congressional focus The workshop also gave the approximately 300 NYSP representatives from I75 campuses across the country an opportunity to solicit support for the program from their representatives in Congress and to honor last year’s outstanding NYSP prolects. The winner at NYSP’s national poster contests also was honored. Trish Nyeshia Brewington, a participant in the NYSP program at Fayetteville State University, won the grand prize in the program’s national poster contest. All winning posten from the contest will be on display in the NCAA Visitor Center galley through March.
