A TRIBUTE TO DAVE PERRY

welcome 

Welcome to the 2012 Illinois Water Polo All State 

and Hall of Fame Awards Banquet. It’s been a great 

season and tonight is our opportunity to honor the 

athletes, coaches and Hall of Fame inductees as they 

take their place in history as being the best of the 

best. Congratulations on a tremendous season to all 

our award winners as we prepare recognize them this 

evening. 

It is with a heavy heart that one of our longtime coaches, administrators, and friend of the 

sport will not be with us this year. Dave Perry, Fenwick Boys Head Coach, passed away on 

September 11, 2011. A tragic victim of cancer, Dave’s positive attitude, energy, and enthusiasm 

for our sport will be constantly remembered by everyone who had the privilege of 

knowing and working with him. His development of many young women and men through 

our sport is a constant reminder for all of us regarding the importance of leadership. Dave 

was always about what was best for the sport, not just his team. As a result of his hard work, 

we are an IHSA recognized sport for Boys and Girls that has just completed its 11th full 

season, a yearly banquet to recognize our top performers, a Hall of Fame to honor the past 

pioneers and performers of our sport, more high school teams playing than any other state 

outside of California, and legacy that will continue to inspire others to greatness. It was 

truly an honor to have the opportunity to work with Dave. He will always be an inspiration 

for me as his contributions and dedication to excellence are great examples of what we 

should all strive for every day of lives!! 

At this time, I would like to take a moment to thank the following individuals for their 

efforts on Illinois Water Polo in putting all the details of this event together along with all 

the other things they do to keep Water Polo moving forward in Illinois. A very special 

thank you to Cindy and Barry Jones for compiling the Banquet Book and the Slide 

Presentation for our event tonight!! Special thanks to our officers, Perry Korbakis (Vice- 

President), Carol Macola (Secretary), Mark Menis (Treasurer). Committee representatives 

are, Tim Caldwell (Communications), Dan Jackovich (Fundraising), Andy Barry, Bill 

Walztoni, Jeff Wimer, Pat Bauer, and Rich Norman (Hall of Fame), Garrin Kapecki 

(Masters and Scholarship), Noah Himmel (Player Recognition), Perry Korbakis (Referees), 

Sally Stelnicki (Banquet). Our Liaisons are Heriberto “Beto” Garcia and Santiago Rosario

Shapiro (College Programs). Running our leagues are Rob Lindgren (Summer League) and 

Eddie Prystalski (Fall & Winter Leagues).

For the last 24 years, water polo players who are seniors are nominated by 

their coaches to receive the SENIOR SCHOLASTIC PLAYER OF THE YEAR 

AWARD. Each coach has the opportunity to nominate players they feel exemplify 

the outstanding qualities of the sport, have a minimum of a 3.5 grade 

point average or better along with being involved in activities within their 

school and community in addtion to being a top academic student. From 

the names submitted, the coaches select one girl and one boy who they feel

CHAD CASTRO AND 

LYNN CASTRO 

A True Love of Water Polo 

In 1974 Chad was the only starter from 

OPRF’s water polo team returning from the 

ISA state championship they won in 1973. 

1974 was the first year Fenwick competed 

for the state title. In Chad’s senior year, he scored about 80% of OPRF’s goals, leading 

them to a third place finish at state. He earned First team All State. Chad then went 

on to play at Loyola University. 

In 1978, Chad and the Ramblers finished sixth in the NCAA championships and second 

in the finals at the U.S. Indoor National Water Polo Championship, losing by a 

single goal to NYAC, a team made up of international stars. His senior year, he helped 

lead Loyola to a fifth place finish at the NCAA. Despite Loyola’s continued successful 

recruiting of the top Illinois star water polo players, no Loyola team before or after 

those 1978 and 1979 teams ever finished as high in the NCAA championships nor 

reached the finals of the U.S. Indoor Nationals. 

After graduating college, Chad graduated law school from Loyola University ranking 

second in his class. He has since been selected as one of Illinois’s Super Lawyers. 

Chad met his wife Lynn when she was also a swimmer and water polo player at 

Loyola. Lynn began her water polo career during her age group days playing for Wells 

Park/CPD. Following her graduation from Loyola, Lynn went on to become a Vice- 

President at Northern Trust Bank. 

Chad and Lynn came back to water polo when they taught their son Michael and four 

other boys from Lyons how to play the game they loved. Prior to this time, Lyons 

Township High School was known as a swimming team and had little success in water 

polo in both boys and girls divisions. The boys’ teams routinely finished with records 

well below .500 

Despite their demanding professional careers, Chad and Lynn volunteered eight 

months a year of their time to inspire the boys to play the best water polo they could. 

By Michael’s sophomore year Lyons’ finished ranked fifth in the coaches poll.

After their son Michael graduated in 2007, Chad and Lynn were called on to assist the 

girls’ program. In 2006, the Lyons girls were not even ranked in the top 20 in the state 

and had finished fifth place out of six in the West Suburban Conference. 

Within two years, Lyons girls became a dominant water polo force in the state finishing 

with records of 25-4 and 27-4 in 2009. In 2010, at the urgings of some of the 

Lyons’ parents, Lynn Castro was asked to coach the high school girls’ water polo team. 

The parents insisted that the school hire Lynn, claiming that the girls would win the 

state championship that year. No other coach in Illinois history had such pre-season 

expectations. 

Despite those pressures, with Lynn’s coaching, the Lyons girls’ team went on to have a 

perfect 35-0 record and a state championship. Lynn and Chad’s philosophy has always 

been defense first and that Lyons team on their way to a perfect season set a record by 

shutting out their opponents in seven of their games. Since 2006, the Lyons girls have 

been 25-0 in conference games under tutelage of Chad and Lynn. 

For the past eight to ten years, Chad and Lynn have toiled with one goal in mind: help 

Lyons Boys and Girls Water Polo become Top Tier Illinois programs. On April 30, 

2012, for the first time in history, both the Lyons Boys and Girls teams were ranked 

number one in the state. 

Chad and Lynn have been asked why they devote time and energy to other people’s 

children when they receive no compensation for it. Chad and Lynn’s response is always 

the same: 

“We just love to teach boys and girls how to play water polo.”

The Dave Perry Scholarship 

In 2011, Illinois Water Polo lost a legend. 

Beginning in 2013, the IWP Board of Directors is proud 

to honor Coach Perry with the introduction of The Dave 

Perry Scholarship. Intended to support Illinois water 

polo athletes who aspire to continue playing in college, 

the scholarship challenges players to dream big and 

strive for their full potential. 

• All Illinois high school seniors playing on IHSA water 

polo teams are eligible 

• Application period is February 1st - May 1st, 2013. 

• Scholarships announced at next years All State
