Prague Philharmonia Orchestral Academy
The Prague Philharmonia Orchestral Academy was established in 2008. The very first project
of the type in the Czech Republic, its objective is to seek out talented music school students and
graduates and provide them with the practical experience of playing in an orchestra. Owing
to the enormous interest shown in the first year, the original number of the students (five) has grown
to the current 12. In the 2011/12 season the Orchestral Academy will continue to give young people
the chance to gain orchestral experience, while the Prague Philharmonia will in turn have
the opportunity to add talented young musicians to its ranks.
In 2009 some of the Orchestral Academy members participated in the unique “YouTube Symphony
Orchestra” project. Two of them, Jakub Fišer and Ondřej Martinovský, together with another
90 selected musicians from all over the world, performed under the conductor Michael Tilson
Thomas at New York’s hallowed Carnegie Hall. This fact too proves the Prague Philharmonia
Orchestral Academy’s exceptionality and its usefulness for its members.
The Prague Philharmonia Orchestral Academy is primarily intended for students of Czech and
foreign secondary music schools and universities, as well as their graduates, who possess
the artistic preconditions for performing with the Prague Philharmonia or other leading orchestras.
The Orchestral Academy is organised by the Prague Philharmonia.
The year-long course can be attended by musicians aged between 18 and 30 from the Czech
Republic, EU member states and other countries. Membership and the respective scholarship can
only be gained twice.
Applicants can become members of the Prague Philharmonia Orchestral Academy and obtain
a year-long scholarship after passing an audition organised by the Prague Philharmonia.
The integrated educational programme includes individual teaching of parts under the guidance
of concert masters and the Prague Philharmonia’s leading players. The students are also provided
with the opportunity to gain invaluable professional experience by participating in Prague
Philharmonia projects both in the Czech Republic and abroad, performing at chamber and
contemporary music concerts, taking part in recordings of CDs and a number of other activities,
including seminars with soloists, conductors, as well as internationally renowned guest artists.
