Hello from us!
Dear friends,
The way you live everyday. That’s what should
decide how you plan your home. And creating
a home that really works for everyday living for
everyone in the family is not so difficult. And it
does not have to be very expensive. Let your
home reflect who you are and how you live. That
is how you make it work. Because we believe
that the home is the most important place in the
world.
In both our stores we have prepared the arrival
of the new range and catalogue for months.
We have changed over 50 room settings and
the stores are filled with new products, tips and
ideas on how you can make your home work for
you.
Adding to that, the Alexandra Store Renewal is
progressing really well with new departments,
room settings, ideas, inspiration, more space
and of course IKEA’s affordable prices, and you
can see why we are so keen on getting you to
visit one or both of our stores now.
Enjoy this issue from friends and the arrival of the
new larger IKEA Catalogue 2009 and we look
forward to seeing you in the store.
IKEA Alexandra respectively
Dear friends of IKEA,
This is the time of year when
the IKEA catalogue is being
distributed to our homes.
Introduced in 1951, it is now
printed in more than 195
million copies in 27 different
languages, thereby making
it the most widely distributed
commercial publication in
the world. The impact of
the publication cannot be
underestimated.
In my childhood I lived only 2
kilometers away from one of
the very first and iconic IKEA
department stores in the
world, located in Stockholm.
I could easily walk to IKEA,
through a small forest. The
IKEA catalogue was read by
everyone and in my home, as
well as in most other homes,
it was the closest you could
get to a coffee table book. In
addition, it was on display in
the living room for one year.
By the end of the year, you
knew the covers by heart. I
still recall many of these old
covers. My favourite and the
one that
captures
t h e
fashion
at that
time in
a nice
way, is
At IKEA, we provide
you the possibility of not
only a career, but time
for leisure too. We have
vacancies for full-time
and part-time positions
– please visit www.
more, or email us at
SWEDISH NOTE
The Ambassador of Sweden,
Pär Ahlberger
the one from 1985 with the
orange KLIPPAN sofa. These
catalogues are very much
reflecting the development
of design over the years and
although I feel nostalgic with
the early pictures from the
1970s, I must admit that the
design of the products have
improved over the years.
We even used the IKEA
catalogue in school. I
recalled lessons with the aim
of preparing us to furnish
our own future homes with
a limited budget. We got
a first fictive salary and an
IKEA catalogue to choose
furnitures and household
equipment from. No
alternatives were given,
IKEA was indeed furnishing
Sweden. I remembered
trying to save costs on the
furnitures in order to be able
to buy a TV-set with my
first fictive salary. The result
indeed looked a bit poor,
although IKEA should not be
blamed for that. My teacher
was obviously not amused.
Some weeks ago I had the
great pleasure of attending
an art exhibition in IKEA. I
very much enjoyed meeting
the young Singaporean
artists with such impressive
talents. The art is still on
display and for sale at IKEA,
the piece “Twenty Four
Duplications” of old Leyland
buses touched me since
we had similar buses in my
childhood.
On 6 June, Swedish National
Day, IKEA for the very
first time ever organised
a dinner in the showroom
at IKEA Tampines, during
regular opening hours. Me
and my wife joined the
party, together with some
of our friends. It was an
unforgettable experience.
Finally, let me wish you all a
wonderful summer.
CENTERPIECE
In celebration of our 30th birthday, we have launched Democratic
Art Singapore, a platform where local artists can make their art
accessible and available to the many people in Singapore through
democratic showcasing and democratic (affordable) prices in the
IKEA stores.
We have teamed up with four local emerging artists: Dyn
(Safaruddin Bin Abdul Hamid), Lim Bee Ling, Luke Bartholomew
Tan, Shubigi Rao, and local art gallery, Gallery Eighty, to bring you
a series of limited edition, signed art prints that are on sale in both
IKEA Alexandra and IKEA Tampines at a democratic price of $299
per art print.
Lim Bee Ling, one of the artists whose works are on display, captures
the notions of space, common memories and the environment in a
multi-layered form that is interesting and masterful. Her two artworks
“TWENTY FOUR DUPLICATIONS, PUZZLING TONES 219 and “ON
DEPARTURING”, a development of her Puzzling Tones Series 2003,
are rendered with screens and screen print methods.
Perhaps it is time to consider having a piece of art on your wall to
set the mood in your room or let it be a conversational centerpiece
in your living room whenever your friends visit your home.
Visit the IKEA stores to check out these limited artprints or view them at www.IKEA.com.sg
SWEDISH RECIPE
Marängsviss Contributed by our In-House Chef,
Marängsviss, or originally known as marängsuisse (Swiss
Kristoffer Luczak, Director of Culinary
meringue), is a Swedish ”hovdessert”, a dessert that was
Development at the Crown Macau.
created for the Swedish royal court but it has evolved to be
Kristoffer was most recently Executive
a Swedish old-fashioned dessert for all occasions.
Chef at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore.
The Peninsula Bangkok won the Travel &
Leisure’s “Best Food in Asia 2004” whilst
he was the Executive Chef there.
Considering that most Swedish kitchens were staffed and
managed by Swiss Chefs, or even working with one of
Sweden’s most important Culinary Ambassador, Tore
Wretman, it is very possible that the dessert was created
in Sweden, and promoted by one of the most famous Swiss
Chefs in Sweden, Werner Vogeli.
Nevertheless, Marängsviss is a great
dessert: vanilla ice cream, small meringues,
sliced bananas, whipped cream, and semi
hot chocolate sauce which turns cold and
hard on the cold dessert when poured. It is
done in layers in a bowl or on a flat plate-
the best was when you actually were
allowed to colour the cream green with
caramle pastry colour as a child (works
very well in my sisters’ hair, to my total happiness).
The summer version was made with strawberry, from
the start of June (school holidays), where you picked the
Summer’s bloom of strawberries as part of the fun.
The dessert is then home-made with self-made chocolate
sauce and meringues- all hard work to enjoy this seemingly
simple dessert!
Ingredients for 4 portions:
A few scoops of vanilla ice cream
1 bag small meringues approx. 40pcs
3 dl whipped cream
200g strawberries, halved
1 dl chocolate sauce
IKEA promotes responsible coffee!
IKEA serves and sells coffee equivalent to more than 115,000,000 cups a year. From July 2008,
IKEA is happy to share that all coffee sold and served at IKEA stores and offices worldwide has
been UTZ Certified with traceability all the way back to the plantations.
To ensure that the coffee is produced under socially and environmentally responsible conditions,
IKEA has decided to strictly use UTZ Certified coffee. UTZ Certified coffee is available from all
main origins and comes from a broad range of coffee farms, including both large mainstream
coffee producers and those that use small-scale and shade-grown production methods.
COFFEE CHAT
When buying a pack of coffee from the Swedish Food Market, near the checkout counters, you
can easily find out exactly which plantations the coffee comes from. By visiting the tracer tool at
www.utzcertified.org/IKEA, you can access the world of information about the plantations that delivered the coffee to your
specific pack. Pretty neat, don’t you think?
And of course you can take sip after sip of your coffee knowing that it was produced with care for people
and the environment.
•
•
•
•
•
How to make it:
1 dl = 100ml
In the bowl start with scoops of vanilla ice cream, then layer with
whipping cream, halved strawberries, and meringues, cream on
top and the semi hot chocolate sauce.
Let the dessert rest for 15 minutes before serving. In Swedish
climate, it is possible to keep the dessert out for up to 2 hours but
in Singapore’s climate, perhaps the maximum is 30 minutes before
serving, for best effect.
UTZ Certified is an independent not-for-profit organization that operates the world’s largest and fastest growing certification
programme for responsible coffee production. The full UTZ Certified code of conduct is available at www.utzcertified.org

Time for Some Fancy Footwork!
Laminate floors are fast becoming the
flooring of choice for active families and
homeowners. If you love the gorgeous look of
a wood or stone floor but are worried about
high traffic that can ruin expensive floors, laminate floors
are probably the best option for you.
Check out the new flooring department in both
IKEA stores!
FLOORING
As part of the 2009 range, IKEA is happy to re-introduce
its range of new and improved laminate flooring. The flooring range adds on to
IKEA’s offering of being a complete home furnishing solution under one roof for all
your home furnishing needs.
In order to provide high quality and easy-to-lay floors as the starting point of
coordination and style for every room in the home, IKEA does its part by sourcing
for the most appropriate material and buying them in bulk to get the best possible
price. And by making the product easy for customers to assemble and transport on their own, customers are able to play
their part in lowering the price since the cost of delivery and assembly is not absorbed into the selling price.
Laminate flooring is a hybrid. It looks like real wood but it’s not. Yet it’s not vinyl tiling and it’s not engineered flooring.
Laminate flooring is a surface layer of two thin sheets of paper impregnated with melamine. This surface layer is a
photograph of wood grain, not real wood, and is usually covered by a hard transparent layer
IKEA’s range of laminate flooring also comes with a generous 15-year guarantee.
Visit www.IKEA.com.sg to find out more.
Advantages of laminate
• Low cost, durability and ease of maintenance.
Flooring Workshop
• Appearance of real hardwood floors at a fraction of the price.
• High UV resistance blocks the sun’s harmful rays and protects the floor pattern
from fading over time.
• Installation is quick and easy and is non-permanent, allowing one to easily
change their flooring to their liking with time or remove it to leave original
flooring behind (for example, rental flats).
• No glue needed because easy click-lock method is used, no chemical smells.
• Repairs can also be quickly and easily done since damaged planks can be
replaced without contrasting with the pattern of surrounding boards.
• Invisible joints and smooth surface prevent dust and dirt from gaining a foothold
and permit easy cleaning.
Join us and see for yourself how easy it is to install your new flooring. This workshop is most suited for new home owners, and those who are
intending to go through a major renovation without hurting their pockets too much.
ENVIRONMENT
Thanks to your support, we have seen an amazing 80% reduction in the use of plastic bags since April last year! To date,
customers bought more than 960,000 plastic bags. The stores used to give out 6.3 million bags annually so we have
managed to cut plastic bag usage by 5.3 million!
In an effort to reduce the impact on the environment, specifically the haze that
affects us annually, we have stopped giving out free plastic bags since April last
year and customers pay 5 to10 cents per plastic bag depending on the size. We
have also slashed the price of our IKEA blue re-useable bag into less than half, to
give you a good alternative. And now we are bringing in a smaller version of this
re-usable bag for your convenience!
All proceeds collected from the sale of plastic bags goes to the World Wildlife
Fund (WWF Singapore) to help in the development of sustainable alternative
livelihoods for the local communities in the Riau province of Sumatra, who rely on
the slash-and-burn methods to clear agricultural land.
In IKEA, we always involve you, our customer, in the buying process with our selfserve
system and self assembly option. So when it comes to saving the environment, we are glad that we can do one part
while you do the other and together, we can do something for the environment.
Our young citizens of Småland, the småles, are also doing their part by bringing old newspapers to
our two stores. These newspapers are then used at the wrapping stations for you to pack your items
rather than using new paper. To date, the Småland citizens have brought us over 50 tonnes of paper
since September last year!
Synopsis
Sing to the Dawn is the coming-of-age story of a girl fighting for her
right to basic education and making true her dreams.
Teenager Dawan aspires more than what her small village can
offer. When her village is at risk of being taken over for urban
development, her life is turned upside down.
In order to protect her, Somchai, Dawan’s father, insists that Dawan
be engaged to Benz, the brutish son of the village landlord, Pairote.
Dawan hopes to escape her fate by winning a scholarship to study
in the big city but her father wants the scholarship for her brother,
Kai.
When Old Wichien, the crazy village fool reveals to her a secret
about the village that could possibly save their home from the
impending destruction, Dawan and Kai, together with the aid
of some clever animals, embark on an adventure to find the real
decree that will change all their destiny.
As Dawan learns to overcome dangerous obstacles and the
traditional limits placed upon her, she saves the village and realizes
her dream.
