Dear friends,

This is the time of year when
the IKEA catalogue is being
distributed to our homes.
Introduced in 1951, it is now
printed in more than 195
million copies in 27 different
languages, thereby making
it the most widely distributed
commercial publication in
the world. The impact of
the publication cannot be
underestimated.
In my childhood I lived only 2
kilometers away from one of
the very first and iconic IKEA
department stores in the
world, located in Stockholm.
I could easily walk to IKEA,
through a small forest. The
IKEA catalogue was read by
everyone and in my home, as
well as in most other homes,
it was the closest you could
get to a coffee table book. In
addition, it was on display in
the living room for one year.
By the end of the year, you
knew the covers by heart. I
still recall many of these old
covers. My favourite and the

SWEDISH NOTE

reflecting the development
of design over the years and
although I feel nostalgic with
the early pictures from the
1970s, I must admit that the
design of the products have
improved over the years.
We even used the IKEA
catalogue in school. I
recalled lessons with the aim
of preparing us to furnish
our own future homes with
a limited budget. We got
a first fictive salary and an
IKEA catalogue to choose
furnitures and household
equipment from. No
alternatives were given,
IKEA was indeed furnishing
Sweden. I remembered
trying to save costs on the
furnitures in order to be able
to buy a TV-set with my
first fictive salary. The result
indeed looked a bit poor,
although IKEA should not be
blamed for that. My teacher
was obviously not amused.
Some weeks ago I had the
great pleasure of attending
an art exhibition in IKEA. I
very much enjoyed meeting
the young Singaporean
artists with such impressive
talents. The art is still on
display and for sale at IKEA,
the piece “Twenty Four
Duplications” of old Leyland
buses touched me since
we had similar buses in my
childhood.
On 6 June, Swedish National
Day, IKEA for the very
first time ever organised
a dinner in the showroom
at IKEA Tampines, during
regular opening hours. Me
and my wife joined the
party, together with some
of our friends. It was an
unforgettable experience.

wonderful summer.

CENTERPIECE
In celebration of our 30th birthday, we have launched Democratic
Art Singapore, a platform where local artists can make their art
accessible and available to the many people in Singapore through
democratic showcasing and democratic (affordable) prices in the
IKEA stores.
We have teamed up with four local emerging artists: Dyn
(Safaruddin Bin Abdul Hamid), Lim Bee Ling, Luke Bartholomew
Tan, Shubigi Rao, and local art gallery, Gallery Eighty, to bring you
a series of limited edition, signed art prints that are on sale in both
IKEA Alexandra and IKEA Tampines at a democratic price of $299
per art print.
Lim Bee Ling, one of the artists whose works are on display, captures
the notions of space, common memories and the environment in a
multi-layered form that is interesting and masterful. Her two artworks
“TWENTY FOUR DUPLICATIONS, PUZZLING TONES 219 and “ON
DEPARTURING”, a development of her Puzzling Tones Series 2003,
are rendered with screens and screen print methods.
Perhaps it is time to consider having a piece of art on your wall to

SWEDISH RECIPE

Marängsviss, or originally known as marängsuisse (Swiss
Kristoffer Luczak, Director of Culinary
meringue), is a Swedish ”hovdessert”, a dessert that was

he was the Executive Chef there.
Considering that most Swedish kitchens were staffed and
managed by Swiss Chefs, or even working with one of
Sweden’s most important Culinary Ambassador, Tore
Wretman, it is very possible that the dessert was created
in Sweden, and promoted by one of the most famous Swiss
Chefs in Sweden, Werner Vogeli.
Nevertheless, Marängsviss is a great
dessert: vanilla ice cream, small meringues,
sliced bananas, whipped cream, and semi
hot chocolate sauce which turns cold and
hard on the cold dessert when poured. It is
done in layers in a bowl or on a flat plate-
the best was when you actually were
allowed to colour the cream green with
caramle pastry colour as a child (works
very well in my sisters’ hair, to my total happiness).
The summer version was made with strawberry, from
the start of June (school holidays), where you picked the
Summer’s bloom of strawberries as part of the fun.
The dessert is then home-made with self-made chocolate
sauce and meringues- all hard work to enjoy this seemingly
simple dessert!
Ingredients for 4 portions:
A few scoops of vanilla ice cream
1 bag small meringues approx. 40pcs
3 dl whipped cream
200g strawberries, halved
1 dl chocolate sauce

How to make it:
1 dl = 100ml
In the bowl start with scoops of vanilla ice cream, then layer with
whipping cream, halved strawberries, and meringues, cream on
top and the semi hot chocolate sauce.
Let the dessert rest for 15 minutes before serving. In Swedish
climate, it is possible to keep the dessert out for up to 2 hours but
in Singapore’s climate, perhaps the maximum is 30 minutes before
serving, for best effect.

ENVIRONMENT
Thanks to your support, we have seen an amazing 80% reduction in the use of plastic bags since April last year! To date,
customers bought more than 960,000 plastic bags. The stores used to give out 6.3 million bags annually so we have
managed to cut plastic bag usage by 5.3 million!
In an effort to reduce the impact on the environment, specifically the haze that
affects us annually, we have stopped giving out free plastic bags since April last
year and customers pay 5 to10 cents per plastic bag depending on the size. We
have also slashed the price of our IKEA blue re-useable bag into less than half, to
give you a good alternative. And now we are bringing in a smaller version of this
re-usable bag for your convenience!
All proceeds collected from the sale of plastic bags goes to the World Wildlife
Fund (WWF Singapore) to help in the development of sustainable alternative
livelihoods for the local communities in the Riau province of Sumatra, who rely on
the slash-and-burn methods to clear agricultural land.
In IKEA, we always involve you, our customer, in the buying process with our selfserve
system and self assembly option. So when it comes to saving the environment, we are glad that we can do one part
while you do the other and together, we can do something for the environment.
Our young citizens of Småland, the småles, are also doing their part by bringing old newspapers to
our two stores. These newspapers are then used at the wrapping stations for you to pack your items
rather than using new paper. To date, the Småland citizens have brought us over 50 tonnes of paper
since September last year!
