Dear friends in our community:
Crossroads is making significant strives in improving the behavioral health services we provide to local children
and their families.
Today I want to focus on the services we provide to our youngest clients – birth to age five – and address the
critical and direct connection to the successful social and emotional development of our children.
Early childhood development is an urgent educational, economic and moral imperative. Scientific research that
has emerged relatively recently demonstrates that we can quantify the link between high-quality early child
development and achieving our most vital economic and social goals – a competitive workforce, improved
health outcomes and reduced crime.
If we ignore our children’s needs, we potentially face a long-term economic security crisis. But, by investing in
early childhood development programs of the highest quality – such as those we offer at Crossroads – we can
reduce costly social burdens and increase economic productivity. In fact, research by the Rand Corporation
shows savings of at least $8 for every $1 spent.
Many people seem to think that the ‘achievement gap’ suddenly occurs around third grade. But that’s far too
late to address it. We have evidence that the achievement gap is actually apparent as early as 18 months. That’s
precisely why we recently expanded our Early Childhood Services Center in Painesville to reach children from
birth to age five.
Special education costs have soared, putting enormous unmet burdens on local, state and federal budgets.
Yet, we also know from research that high-quality early childhood development can reduce later special education
referrals by as much as 50 percent. Locally, special education for a single child with severe autism can approach
$100,000 per year. That’s only the economic cost – not the human cost.
Research by economists like Nobel Prize-winner James J. Heckman of the University of Chicago reveals
that one of the most cost-effective ways to increase high school graduation rates is to make sure kids are
ready emotionally, socially, and academically for kindergarten. That’s because the most critical time for
developing social and emotional skills is from birth to age five; when young children need to develop the
ability to listen, concentrate on completing a task, regulate emotions, develop motivation and a work
ethic, and get along with peers.
Dr. Heckman has proven that investing in high-quality early childhood development of disadvantaged
young children will produce as much as a 10 percent annual return on investment. That return comes
both to individuals, in increased adult earnings, and also to society, in better education and health
outcomes, and less crime and poverty.
That’s why we do what we do.

Dear parents and neighbors:
Crossroads is making tremendous leaps forward in improving
access and delivery of services to children with mental health and
substance abuse issues.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has revealed
the startling fact that one-half of all lifetime cases of mental
illness begin by age 14, three-quarters by age 24. Despite
effective treatments, there are long delays – sometimes decades
– between the first onset of symptoms and when people seek
and receive treatment. Think about how that would apply to
the youngsters that we are serving at Crossroads: A pre-schooler
might not be diagnosed until high school!
Not all of the children who come to Crossroads have severe
emotional disturbances, but many do. The U.S. Surgeon General
reports that 10 percent of children and adolescents in the United
States suffer from serious emotional and mental disorders that
cause significant functional impairment in their day-to-day lives at
home, in school and with peers.
Unfortunately, we are seeing more and more very young
children with serious mental health problems. The ages of the
children we serve ranges from birth to age eighteen. In some
cases we start at the prenatal stage, working with their parents.
As needs change, we develop new ways to help. Reaching out
to help troubled children, adolescents and their families is at the
core of Crossroads mission.
Our Board of Trustees sees Crossroads as a crucial resource in
our community. Whether we are serving youngsters in distress or
helping adolescents make better choices in life, it all comes back to
a sense of community. I am proud to lead our Board in
supporting the important mission of Crossroads.

A Parent Speaks
I came to Crossroads scared and confused shortly after my son had his first
in-patient psychiatric hospital stay just after his fifth birthday. I had tried to
get help with my son’s behavior problems for several years (in a different
county) and everyone I had gone to said that they were a result of
my divorce and poor parenting. When I walked into Crossroads for our first
visit, I was expecting more of the same – people blaming me for his problems.
But I was wrong.
From our very first appointment we felt welcomed by Crossroads. It was a
new experience to be part of a team trying to address what was going on,
instead of feeling completely alone. My family was being addressed as an
entire unit, not one sick child and one bad parent. The staff recognized that
my son’s mental illness was affecting my entire family, and they worked with
all of us to learn the skills we needed to have to handle the daily chaos that
was our life. For the first time I was told that it wasn’t my fault; my son had an
illness not a bad mother.
Over the years we have participated in many services at Crossroads. My son
spent three years in the PHP program (including summers); all of the children
participated in group therapy to address their individual issues; individual and
family counseling; parenting classes; case management; psychiatry; and
respite.
We learned many skills, but the two most important things we learned
were: 1.) We were not alone in this; we had people to turn to without feeling
like we were being judged. 2.) We have learned to become advocates
for ourselves and others who have a loved one with mental illness.
In the last six years our family has been through a lot, but we were not
alone. The Crossroads staff members involved with my family have been
right beside us, guiding us through the difficult times and celebrating the
successes.

Survey Shows High Client Satisfaction
Ninety-three percent of Crossroads parents
would recommend our services to others.
That is one of the key findings of a recent
customer satisfaction survey. Children and parents
completed more than 550 questionnaires.
They include 411 who received services at our
Munson Road headquarters, 68 who receive
school-based services, 49 from our Early Head
Start home-based program, with the remainder
coming from our May Hayden site and via
juvenile court.
Ninety-one percent of parents said they are
satisfied with the services their children are
receiving at Crossroads.
Feedback from our older clients themselves
(median age 13) was very positive, with
ninety percent saying they are satisfied with our
services and would say good things to others
about Crossroads.
We even received feedback from some of our
younger clients, aged four to seven. Two-thirds
agreed that when they are with their service
provider from Crossroads, they feel happy. Only
two out of thirty-three said they feel sad. As one
prescient youngster explained, “I get help.”
