2010 PHOENIX MERCURY POSTSEASON MEDIA GUIDE
42
2010 REGULAR SEASON
It‘s no secret that the Mercury was the league‘s most potent offensive team averaging 93.9 points per game, but here‘s an interesting
way to put that scoring prowess into perspective: In a 48-minute game the Mercury would have averaged 110.2 points per outing,
matching the 2010 NBA-leading Suns who averaged 110.2 points per game.
CENTURY NIGHTS
On August 6 vs. San Antonio, the Mercury recorded its 10 th 100-point performance of the season, breaking its 2009
WNBA record for most 100-point games in a single season (9).
BACK-TO-BACK CENTURY NIGHTS
The Mercury recorded back-to-back 100-point performances NINE times in franchise history with THREE of those occurrences taking
place in 2010.
THE BEST X 2
The Mercury reached triple digits in scoring TEN times in 2010, but two of those 100-point nights were especially noteworthy. The
league‘s highest scoring team set a new WNBA record for scoring in back-to-back contests with 123 points at Tulsa on July 22 and
then topped that performance with 127 points in a double overtime win at Minnesota two days later. The two-game total of 250 points
is the most ever in WNBA history, eclipsing the previous mark of 221 set by Phoenix earlier in the same season.
90-POINT NIGHTS
The Mercury scored at least 90 points in 21 games (14-7). The league‘s highest scoring offense reached the 90-point plateau in seven
consecutive games from July 1-24, the most in WNBA history. Phoenix reached six consecutive games three other times in franchise
history and is the only team in the league to do so.
THE NEED FOR SPEED
The Mercury scored at least 90 points in 11 of 12 games from July 1 – August 6 and finished 9-3 in the span. However, the league‘s
fastest offense was slowed considerably scoring just 80.8 points per game in its subsequent four game losing streak. Phoenix was 1-12
in 2010 when scoring less than 90 points. Take a look at some crucial stats leading to Phoenix‘s wins and losses:
OUR HALF > THEIR FULL
15 WINS 19 LOSSES
PPG 102.5 87.1
FG% .513 .438
3PT% .387 .340
PTS IN PAINT 47.2 37.5
FAST BREAK PTS 17.7 13.9
The Mercury raced to a WNBA-record 69 first half points vs. Minnesota on July 29 topping its previous record of 67 set earlier in the
year at Tulsa on July 22. To put that astonishing number in perspective, in 134 WNBA games prior to that performance, 56 teams did
not score more than 69 points in the entire game!
SCREECHING HALT
The league‘s fastest offense came to a screeching halt in New York on August 14 when the Liberty held the Mercury to just 69 points.
It tied the third lowest output since the club adopted an up-tempo offensive style in 2006 and is the lowest point total since June 13,
2007 when the club scored 69 at Washington. To put the number in perspective. Phoenix scored 69 points in the FIRST HALF earlier in
the season vs. Minnesota.
