It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our Xth International Forum, in one of the world’s 

most renowned “art cathedrals” Museo Guggenheim Bilbao. More so, as we come together 

with world experts and artists to debate current sculpture. 

Sculpture Today. A Space for Inquiry – Experience Re-codified 

This program provides you with an overview of what is in store at the conference and the 

visiting day. I hope you have keen ears and minds like sponges which will travel home full of 

ideas, insight, memorable experiences, new contacts and renewed friendships.

Jose Angel Uberuaga (Munitibar) 

Basque culture is deeply rooted in a sense of belonging, 

language and custom. Traditionally a close attachment to 

the home, especially when it consists of a selfsufficient, 

family-run farm or baserri(a), embodied these cultural roots. 

Our first visit exemplifies such Basque tradition. “Caserio 

Garro”, is a hidden away paradise, and home to the Artist 

Jose Angel Uberuaga “Ube”. 

Ube’s hideaway is his hub for nurturing creative thought. We 

will see how his process takes place from the conception to 

finished pieces set in the environment that has somehow 

given them birth. “The complexity of the simple” in Ube’s 

words, is the philosophy behind his work.

SANTUARIO DE ARANTZAZU (Oñati) 

Our second stop located in the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park, is 

considered fundamental toBasque heritage and considered by some 

art experts to be one of the greatest religiousbuildings of the 20th 

century. 

Temples on the site have been cared for by Franciscan monks for over 

500 years. It isfrom this sanctuary that Basque dialects were unified to 

establish guidelines of today’s standard Basque, known as “Euskara 

Batua”. 

Arantzazu personifies a considerable part of the Basque soul, 

characteristic in it’ssobriety and individuality. As well as being a 

milestone of spirituality, culture, art, nature, ethics, dialogue and 

peace, it is a world reference in terms of architecture and religious art. 

We will visit the Basilica (1950-55) designed by architect Saénz de Oiza, to discover a masterpiece 

resulting from the work of various celebrated Spanish artists: Jorge Oteiza, Eduardo Chillida, 

NéstorBasterretxea Lucio Muñoz, amongst others.

MUSEO WURTH (Agoncillo) 

The Wurth Musuem in Agoncillo, is part 

of the multinational Wurth’s international 

artfoundation. We will be greeted by the 

foundation’s Director Silvia Linden and 

thenproceed to see the exhibition “The 

collector, The Company and His collection”, 

as well asmany international and Spanish 

Artists, who form part of the permanent 

collection ondisplay, in the building and 

sculpture garden.Amongst others: Jaume

Señorio de Otazu (Etxauri) 

A visit to the vineyards and Bodega “Señorio de Otazu” implies a stroll from the Middle Ages to current 

times. 

From a XIIth Centrury Romanic church, to a XVIth palace, followed by the XIX th mainbuilding and 

finishing in the contemporary “Sala de Barricas” (barrel cellar). Along theroute, we will see pieces from 

the owner’s private sculpture collection: Martin Chrino,Manolo Valdes, Xavier Mascaró, Balthasar Lobo 

amongst others. 

We’ll end the day with a wine tasting session of the house wines, before enjoying agourmet dinner on 

the premises.

Wednsday 9th of November 

CARLOS CIRIZA (Pamplona) 

Carlos Ciriza is one of sculpture network’s first members in Spain, has kindly invited us to visit his studio 

in Pamplona, 

Since his first public exhibition in 1984, Carlos has exhibited and erected public sculpture in many 

countries: USA, France, Portugal, Philippines etc. Blocks of iron and wood are his main materials with 

which he investigates space and form enquiring into process, form and material.

FUNDACIÓN OTEIZA (Alzuza - Navarra) 

The Oteiza Museum is a monographic exhibition space housing the personal collection ofthe renowned 

all-round Artist and artist Jorge Oteiza (Orio 1908 – San Sebastian2003). The collection includes 1,690 

sculptures, 2,000 experimental pieces from theartist’s Chalk Laboratory, and an extensive collection 

of drawings and collages. Thebuilding is situated in rural surroundings in Alzuza (Navarra), 9 km from 

Pamplona. 

It contains a representative selection of work by Oteiza, one 

of the twentieth century’smost important Artists, considered 

the “father” of Basque sculpture. He made his debuton the 

international stage when he won the Gran Prix at the Sao 

Paulo Biennial in 1957with his “Experimental Purpose”. 

The Oteiza Museum was designed by architect Francisco 

Javier Sáenz de Oiza (thesame architect as Arantzazu 

Sanctuary). The building includes a large red concrete cube, 

intended as a metaphor of Oteiza’s recreated space, and 

incorporates the original house in which Jorge Oteiza lived 

from 1975.

Javier Muro at Huarte – Contemporary Art Centre (Huarte - Navarra) 

“To support artistic production and be a space of reference for 

young artists of Navarre. To demonstrate the social relevance of 

contemporary art and be an experimental Centre for the design and 

development of customized projects. At the same time, it aims to be a 

space of interrelation which will offer response to new artistic ideas and 

languages, that are developing in the contemporary world.”Coinciding 

with these objectives, Javier Muro requested a space to set up an 

exhibition for our visit, so we could meet the artist for a dialogue on his 

art. The newly appointed Director Javier Manzanos, promptly agreed to provide a space for this special 

occasion and to greet sculpture network in Huarte.

JOSÉ RAMON ANDA (Bakaiku) 

Jose Ramon Anda was born into a family of cabinet makers, so 

unsurprisingly his essetial material is wood, though he also uses 

bronze, stone, cement etc. The exquisite craft he grew up with 

has influenced his sculpture and workmanship tremendously. His 

investigation has taken him from the impossible geometries evolving 

from basic forms to the “skin” generated between the limits of two 

planes. Always resulting in elegant sculptures one wants to touch and 

possess. 

Parallel to this line of work, Anda is taken by the mystery of trees, 

and like Giuseppe Penone, especially by dead, fallen trees. Hand 

hollowed, leaving chisel marks visible, he has transformed various 

gigantic trees into public sculptures, thus returning them to their 

previous majestic state.

The ARTIUM Collection is made up of almost 3000 artworks 

representing all the techniques used in contemporary art, ranging 

from painting and sculpture to photography, video and installation. 

From the first avantgarde movements to the very latest trends. More 

ecently, ARTIUM began to acquire works by international artists in 

order to broaden the context of the Collection. You will see numerous

Sculpture and architecture tour through Bilbao (Bilbao) 

We will begin the day in Bilbao 

with a bus tour designed by Iciar 

Rodriguez, Bilbao Arte’s Head 

of Programs. www.bilbaoarte.

Department). Iciar will accompany 

us on the itinerary which will take 

us to Bilbao’s most significant 

sculpture, monuments and 

architecture. 

We will stop at highlight points 

and finish with doing the short 

contemporary sculpture trail long 

the “Ria” (Nervion River). The last 

point on the walk is the restaurant 

“Frente al Agua” where we will 

have lunch. 

This marks the end of the 

“Experience” program when 

you can rest before our next 

appointment: the Xth International

Tony Cragg 








Miroslaw Balka 

Artist born in 1958 in Warsaw (Poland), Balka studied at the Fine Arts Academy, 

Warsaw (1980 y 1985). His recent exhibitions include ctrl at Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid 

(2010 – 2011) and How it is in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, London, 2009, as part 

of the Unilever Series. In 1993 he represented Poland at the 45th Venice Biennale 

and participated at the IX Dokumenta Kassel (1992). He regularly exhibits in various 

contemporary art museums and galleries around the World. Balka currently lives and 

works in his homeland Warsaw, Poland. 

Susan Philipsz 

Sound artist and winner of the 2010 The Turner Prize, was born in Glasgow (1965). She 

studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art (1989 – 1993) and at Ulster University 

(1993 – 1994). In 2010 she participated in the 29 São Paulo Biennale. In 2007 she was 

selected for the 2007 Skulptur Projekte Münster 07 and in 2009 exhibited the piece Appear 

to me in the Museo Reina Sofía, and at the Monasterio de Silos. Her work is present in 

important museums and collections throughout the World. Phillipsz currently lives and 

works in Berlin, Germany. 

Jaume Plensa 

Born in Barcelona in 1955, Plensa has many public works throughout the world including 

Crown Fountain, in Chicago’s Millennium Park, USA and Dream at St. Helens, Great 

Britain. 

He is currently showing at Yorkshire Sculpture Park Great Britain and various other 

galleries and museums in Europe, USA and Japan He is visiting lecturer at Chicago’s 

School of the Art Institute, where he has been named Doctor Honoris Causa. Plensa has 

also taught at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He currently lives and works
