Guideline 3.A ➠Do not remove the forest litter layer, stumps, and/or root systems. Background and Implementation Notes The forest fl oor is a layer made up of organic materials, including leaves, needles, bark and wood, that lies above the mineral soil. The organic material exists in various stages of decomposition. Numerous insects, microbes and fungi feed on the litter and play an important role in nutrient cycling. Retaining the forest litter layer, stumps and root systems on a site will help protect nutrient levels and prevent soil erosion. Soil moisture is conserved by the protective layer, providing better growing conditions for tree seedlings and other plants. The forest fl oor also provides important habitat features for wildlife (Figure 2-8). In some instances it may be necessary to move stumps and root systems during site preparation, but the material should still be retained on the site so that nutrients contained in that material are not lost.
