The W Satellites
The W satellites are designed to provide telecommunications services primarily over Europe (W1, W2, W3,
W3A and W5). and communication services over Russia and Africa (W4).
W1 is designed to provide 28 channels at saturation, W2, W3 and W5 are designed to offer 24 transponders at
saturation and W4 is designed to provide 31 transponders at saturation. W3A is designed to be able to offer
additional capacity at 7º East as well as to back up W3. The W satellites have a minimum operational lifetime of
12 years. The launch dates for the W satellites are as follows:
Satellite Launch Date
W1 September 2000
W2 October 1998
W3 April 1999
W3A Second Half 2003
W4 May 2000
W5 November 2002
The main characteristics of the five satellites are given below.
The W satellites are used principally for telecommunications services, mainly business services, satellite news
gathering, television and radio programme exchanges, etc…. The W satellites are also used to complement
Eutelsat’s offer for TV broadcast distribution services. W1 is deployed at the 10° East orbital position and W2
and W3 are located at 16° and 7° degrees East orbital positions, respectively. W3A is collocated with W3. They
started to replace the EUTELSAT II series at those positions in 1998. W4 is designed to provide mainly
broadcast services and is located at 36º East.
