In July, they conducted a farm tour, followed by an informative, hands on artificial insemination demonstration. Larry also gave a very informative lesson on both AI breeding as well as embryo transplanting. Judy generously served drinks and snacks to all the visitors. The Eurig’s awarded two members, Steven Jones and Emily Roberts with $250 credits towards a purchase of any service offered by Crimson Tide. CSA - What's Happening CEO OF PROGRAMMING - CANADIAN SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION The Canadian Simmental Association’s 43rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) and National show was held in November 2011 during FarmFair in Edmonton. The Alberta Simmental Association did a fantastic job of organizing and hosting breeders from across Canada along with creating a great marketing opportunity for those who brought cattle for the show and sale. Numerous comments were made about the enthusiasm and buzz in the barns that had not been felt at Northlands for some time. A tremendous set of cattle were on display at the National show and it was great to see the interest in our breed especially from the large number of spectators – many of whom were from other breeds or the commercial sector. While visiting at ringside there were regular comments on how much the cattle have improved and how little difference there was in quality throughout the various classes. Simmental has made tremendous strides in the quest for ideal cattle that are not only eye-appealing but also structurally sound and phenotypically superior. A highlight during the show was the announcement by the Alberta Livestock Meat Agency (ALMA) of $325,000.00 of funding to further enhance genomic meat quality research being led by CSA. The CSA members who attended the AGM received reports on finances and operations for the Association as well as Simmental Country. The number of animals being registered and transferred to the CSA increased slightly over the previous year. A Genomics project update was provided and was very well received. The genomics research project triggered numerous questions and great discussion that was addressed by project manager Ms. Sandy Russell, Dr. Steve Miller and the rest of the project team. Also during the meeting, new directors Dee Young of Breton, Alberta and Kelly Ashworth from Oungre, Saskatchewan were elected to the Board along with incumbent Ron Nolan of Markdale, Ontario. Sincere thanks is extended to retiring directors President Rick McIntyre and Don Lundberg both from Saskatchewan – your contributions to the CSA and the Simmental breed are very much appreciated. As a result of Rick McIntyre terming out a new Executive was elected. Ron Nolan was elected as the CSA President, Fraser Redpath of Mather, Mb will serve as 1st Vice President, and Randy Mader Carstairs, Alberta is 2nd vice president. In addition to the changes within the executive, new committee chairs have also been appointed. Fraser has agreed to move from the Promotion Committee to chair the Breed Improvement Committee and Randy is now the new Promotion committee chair. John Sullivan remains as Finance committee chair and Lacey Fisher is again the CSA director responsible for the Young Canadian Simmental Association. One of the highlights of the activities at FarmFair was the induction of four new members into the CSA Hall of Fame. This year, Rodney James – Transcon Livestock, Okotoks, Alberta; Lazy S Ranch – Stewart and Doreen Ainsworth, Mayerthorpe, Alberta; Charles Groeneveld – Alberta Simmental Association/ Highwood Land & Cattle, High River, AB; and Lewis Farms – the Lewis Family of Spruce Grove, Alberta were honored for their contributions towards development of the Simmental breed in Canada. As we look forward to building off the success that Canadian Simmental experienced in 2011, the upcoming year looks to hold even more activity and excitement for the Simmental breed in Canada. Another tremendous set of bulls are being developed and will again be desired by the beef industry. As our genomics project continues to progress we will be providing regular updates as well as beginning to assess data and using that information in our breed improvement and promotions. This year the CSA AGM moves to the Maritimes and will be held in Truro Nova Scotia along with the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition. The National YCSA show will also be held in conjunction with the AGM and promises to be an exciting event so CSA members should start planning to attend.
