On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to
wish everyone a successful 2012.
This is the time of year where we start to see the results of our breeding selections and the
true maternal traits of the Simmental breed. As the 2012 calves hit the ground we can see
our future herd sires and foundation females maturing into all that is exciting about the
Simmental breed – strong material traits, depth of rib, length of loin and quiet dispositions.
Each one with his/her own personality that makes this breed a joy to work with. All the
hard work and long hours pay off. Best of luck to everyone with your calving season.
The Ultrasound Program and Ron Wooddisse Carcass Class at the Royal will continue for
the 2012 year. We hope to see more participation in this exciting new class. OSA again
this year is sponsoring a rebate program for ultrasounding of females. See the information
contained in this issue of the Advocate.
Approximately 175 4-H members showed Simmental calves and yearlings in 2011. This
was an increase of approximately 50 animals over the 2010 year. What an accomplishment
for our breed. Your continued support of the youth is evident in these numbers.
Included in this issue are some new education cards that are available for purchase and
how to order. If they are something that will benefit promoting your operation, please let
us know.
We welcome your input on information to include on the OSA website, for marketing/
breed promotion, and for publication in the Advocate. Articles for consideration can be
forwarded to the Board at the contact address/email listed on page 5. Please send us
your upcoming events and sales for inclusion in the Upcoming Events section. New to this
edition is sale results, please continue to forward for our next publication.
Hope to see you at the Annual General Meeting on March 10, 2012 in Peterborough.
please send it to Melissa.
The winner of the heifer and bull carcass classes at the Royal was Dave & Gayle Milliner (Waydamar Simmentals). The champion
heifer was WAYDAMAR BLK XEY 77X, WMY 77X and the champion bull was WAYDAMAR R SPIDERMAN 79X, WMY79X
Reserve heifer is the entry of Dan O’Brien with DAL MS POL SHEARFORCE122X and reserve bulls (tie) were Ron Nolan with BAR 5
PFF TORRENT 1211X and the Woodissee family with MARYWOOD LADIES MAN 11X.
The bull class had 36 entries. The bull scores were calculated at 70% ultra-sound scan measurements and 30% from CSA epd’s.
The bulls were not exhibited; with the winner being chosen entirely on the above statistics. The winning score was 61.0 and reserve
tied with 60.93 points.
The heifers had 5 entries. The heifer scores were calculated at 50% ultra-sound scan measurements, 30% from CSA epd’s, and the
final 20% in the show ring as placed by a Judge. Before the class entered the ring, 3 of the heifers were within ¾ of a point of each
other. The final tally was: champion was 68.75 and reserve 65.79 – a very close competition.
Nu-Life Mills awarded a $100.00 gift certificate to each of the class winners.
If you would like to participate in the 2012 class you need to start planning now to make sure that you can get your cattle scanned
according to CSA protocols. You should book with BIO as early as possible in order that they can economically fit you into their
schedules.
Something that we found out during this year’s set up was that BIO can only forward your scan data to CSA with your permission.
This also includes info gathered at bull test stations. If you want your info to get to CSA remember to ask BIO.
CSA - What's Happening
CEO OF PROGRAMMING - CANADIAN SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION
The Canadian Simmental Association’s 43rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) and National show was held in November
2011 during FarmFair in Edmonton. The Alberta Simmental Association did a fantastic job of organizing and hosting breeders
from across Canada along with creating a great marketing opportunity for those who brought cattle for the show and sale.
Numerous comments were made about the enthusiasm and buzz in the barns that had not been felt at Northlands for some
time.
A tremendous set of cattle were on display at the National show and it was great to see the interest in our breed especially from
the large number of spectators – many of whom were from other breeds or the commercial sector. While visiting at ringside
there were regular comments on how much the cattle have improved and how little difference there was in quality throughout
the various classes. Simmental has made tremendous strides in the quest for ideal cattle that are not only eye-appealing but
also structurally sound and phenotypically superior. A highlight during the show was the announcement by the Alberta Livestock
Meat Agency (ALMA) of $325,000.00 of funding to further enhance genomic meat quality research being led by CSA.
The CSA members who attended the AGM received reports on finances and operations for the Association as well as Simmental
Country. The number of animals being registered and transferred to the CSA increased slightly over the previous year.
A Genomics project update was provided and was very well received. The genomics research project triggered numerous
questions and great discussion that was addressed by project manager Ms. Sandy Russell, Dr. Steve Miller and the rest of the
project team.
Also during the meeting, new directors Dee Young of Breton, Alberta and Kelly Ashworth from Oungre, Saskatchewan were
elected to the Board along with incumbent Ron Nolan of Markdale, Ontario. Sincere thanks is extended to retiring directors
President Rick McIntyre and Don Lundberg both from Saskatchewan – your contributions to the CSA and the Simmental breed
are very much appreciated. As a result of Rick McIntyre terming out a new Executive was elected. Ron Nolan was elected as
the CSA President, Fraser Redpath of Mather, Mb will serve as 1st Vice President, and Randy Mader Carstairs, Alberta is 2nd
vice president. In addition to the changes within the executive, new committee chairs have also been appointed. Fraser has
agreed to move from the Promotion Committee to chair the Breed Improvement Committee and Randy is now the new Promotion
committee chair. John Sullivan remains as Finance committee chair and Lacey Fisher is again the CSA director responsible
for the Young Canadian Simmental Association.
One of the highlights of the activities at FarmFair was the induction of four new members into the CSA Hall of Fame. This year,
Rodney James – Transcon Livestock, Okotoks, Alberta; Lazy S Ranch – Stewart and Doreen Ainsworth, Mayerthorpe, Alberta;
Charles Groeneveld – Alberta Simmental Association/ Highwood Land & Cattle, High River, AB; and Lewis Farms – the
Lewis Family of Spruce Grove, Alberta were honored for their contributions towards development of the Simmental breed in
Canada.
As we look forward to building off the success that Canadian Simmental experienced in 2011, the upcoming year looks to
hold even more activity and excitement for the Simmental breed in Canada. Another tremendous set of bulls are being developed
and will again be desired by the beef industry. As our genomics project continues to progress we will be providing
regular updates as well as beginning to assess data and using that information in our breed improvement and promotions.
This year the CSA AGM moves to the Maritimes and will be held in Truro Nova Scotia along with the Nova Scotia Provincial
Exhibition. The National YCSA show will also be held in conjunction with the AGM and promises to be an exciting event so
CSA members should start planning to attend. I look forward to seeing everyone at the many Canadian Simmental events
throughout the year.
Hints on Successful Tattooing
As proper identification of animals is the basis for the purebred industry, this is the most important factor a breeder should
consider. Animals can be turned away from shows, sales, and for export purposes because of improper, indistinct, or just plain
erroneous tattoos. Placing a tattoo on an animal should be a simple matter, but it seems it causes many breeders problems
mainly because not enough care is taken at the time the tattoo is applied. Read these tips over, inspect your cattles tattoos when
you have a moment, evaluate your present technique, and see if you can improve on your own tattooing method.
Tools of the Trade tattoo pliers, small brush (a toothbrush works well) for rubbing paste into the tattoo letters, rag for cleaning
ear, alcohol as solvent to wet rag with to remove wax, tube of paste ink. Dont store the tattoo letters in a pile at the bottom of
a container point will become bent or dull. Clean, sharp, straight needles make for good tattoos.
Applying tattoo select a spot between the ribs, well into ear and well away from the hairy edges of the ear. Press firmly and
release, pressing the ear away from the pliers if necessary to avoid tearing the skin. Note if the punctures made are indistinct
or ripped, leave it to heal for a week and try again. Avoid hitting a rib, as this causes excess bleeding and will result in one
side of the puncture being too shallow and the other side too deep, making a poor tattoo.
N.B. Extremely important to thoroughly clean the dirt and wax from the ear.
Apply the paste ink to the ear. There are many types of inks, but paste is recommended. Colors vary, but green works best.
Dont put the paste directly on the tattoo needles, work the paste into the punctures with the brush. If any blood appears, apply
more paste and rub it in until it stops. If the tattoo is a good one, the excess ink may be removed immediately, but usually it is
left on to help minimize bleeding.
Dont place tattoos in the hairy edges. Remember when doing calves, place the tattoo well into the ear. As the calf grows, the
hairy edge works into the ear.
A good tattoo, well into the ear, away from the hairy outer edges and plainly visible is the desired result. Place the breeder
letters in the top, running between the first and second ribs.
The use of a flashlight speeds up the reading of tattoos, but well placed, distinct tattoos should require no aid to read them. Dont
confuse 6's and 9's. Once you've placed the tattoos in the pliers, check on a piece of cardboard before placing in the ear.
Gathering
materials is
the first step
in getting
ready to
tattoo.
1
a clean ear is the first step to a successful
tattoo. Clipping ears may also be necessary
to avoid interference from hair.
3
sanitizing tattooing equipment is just
one way to follow biosecurity protocol.
5
apply ink between the first and
second ribs. the ink should thoroughly
cover the skin.
after several weeks, the tattoo should
become legible as the dried ink flakes
out of the calf’s or kid’s ear.
Pictures taken from: «Tattooing 101: Reviewing the Basics of Identifying Calves», University of Arkansas.
2
4
Keep a firm grip on the calf or kid to
avoid any movement that could cause
the tongs to slip.
Royal Winter Fair Judge 2012 nominations
Billy & Juanita Elmhirst nOminAte ScOtt SchAAke, kS. He is a simmental breeder. Seconded by Dan Munro
Patrick Leahy, with Laura Robson seconding it. We are nominating cliff Orley Of lebAnOn, PA.
Mr. Orley is a graduate of Ohio State Univ., a staff member at Univ. of Kentucky, and has done graduate work at Penn State. He is
a Purebred Herd manager for herds in Utah, Colorado, and Kentucky. He owns and operates Keystone Cattle Services (Custom Fitting
Show/ Sale Cattle), and also owns a herd of purebred Simmental and Charolais cattle. Mr. Orley has judged at the local, state, regional,
national, and international levels including: Toronto, Louisville, Springfield, MA, Timonium, MD, Columbus,OH, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas
City, Denver, Houston, Ft. Worth , Missouri and numerous others. He has also fitted and bred several National Champions in both the
U.S. and Canada. He would be priviledged to judge your show at The Royal.
The Schaake's have been breeding Simmental cattle since 1974, after an introduction to the breed when Scott showed the Grand
Champion Steer (Simmental x Hereford) at the county fair. Artificially Breeding our black cows to Simmental bulls gave us our start in
black-factored Simmental genetics in 1975. In fact, many of our leading cow families trace back to "Chipper N726", who defined the
word "longevity". She remained a productive donor cow to the age of 20 years.
Currently our program utilizes artificial insemination and embryo transfer. Selection pressure for calving ease, maternal influence, moderate
growth, disposition and a manageable mature size has been stressed for several generations. Attention to structural correctness, fleshing
ability and marketing appeal has been a priority since day one. Dr. Scott Schaake was raised on a cow-calf ranch/row crop operation
near Lawrence Kansas. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1984 with a B.S. in Animal Sciences and Industry. He earned his
M.S. at Clemson University and Ph.D. at the University of Kentucky, specializing in the area of Meat Science.
Currently he serves as the coach of the Livestock Judging Team. His teams have won five National Championships during his tenure as a
coach at Kansas State University. Besides coaching, he is involved with teaching Introductory Animal Science Lab, Livestock and Meat
Evaluation, Form and Function of Livestock and Principles of Livestock Selection. In addition to his teaching responsibilities he advises
30-40 undergraduate students each year. Dr. Schaake has an 80% Teaching appointment and 20% Extension appointment. Dr. Schaake
has judged livestock shows in 32 states, Canada, South America and Mexico. His personal interest includes all types of sports, hunting,
fishing and attending his sons' sporting events. His family includes wife, Kandi, and sons Shane and Shilo.
CSA & OSA Simmental Promotion Card
Included with your copy of the Advocate is a copy of the CSA SIMMENTAL PROMOTION CARD as well as
a copy of a card that OSA has developed as an education card aimed at children.
We have developed both of these cards with the general public in mind. Most urban people do not know what a
Simmental is, so the cards are a good way to introduce our Breed to the public. These cards are available from
CSA and OSA respectively. Both are priced at $20.00 per hundred cards.
The rebate is $10 per head for heifers that are in a valid CSA Contemporary Group.
(maximum rebate $150.00 per member)
CSA also sponsors a rebate program for
$10 per head for Bulls and heifers,
that are scanned in a valid Contemporary Group.
