We appreciate your interest in our area, and think you will be surprised by the diversity Jackson County offers. Many
of you have driven through our area but don’t realize we are an exciting destination point as well as a breathtaking drivethrough.
Inside you will find information on a wide variety of recreational opportunities and plenty of shopping. You will see
our accommodations include private and public campgrounds, bed & breakfasts, rustic and modern cabins and great motels.
Our state and county forestland covers 188,000 acres offering the nature lover plenty of space for hunting, hiking and
bird watching. We have over 300 miles of snowmobile trails and over 100 miles of ATV trails. Many of our
accommodations are right on the trail system! We also have cross-country ski trails and hiking trails galore.
We encourage you to not just drive through our area – make this your destination point. Whatever the season, The Black
River Area has what you are looking for.

ATV/Motorcycle Trails
Jackson County and neighboring Clark County
offer a total of 235 miles of trails open to ATVing
and motorcycling.
The landscape’s rolling ruggedness and
great natural beauty is truly unique in the Midwest.
Riders will experience
trails that
wind their way
around beautiful
rock outcroppings,
pass through pristine
meadows,
travel over clear
running trout
creeks and journey
underneath thick
canopies of pine.
Not only is this
unsurpassed trail
system available
during the summer, winter riding is becoming more
popular with ATVers. The county and state trails
offer a breathtaking ride through a winter wonderland
during the winter months.
The Jackson County Forest has 25 miles of single-track
(enduro) off-road motorcycle trails. All
trails are one-way and are accessible only to motorcycles.
Trailheads are located at Crawford Hills
ATV/Motorcycle Park. Use of the trails requires the
purchase of an annual Jackson County use sticker.
Motorcycle trails are open May 15 – October 15.
The Black River State Forest is located along the
edge of the glaciated area that once covered
Wisconsin. In the unglaciated driftless area, many
unique land forms can be seen. Sandstone hills and
towering bluffs can be found throughout the forest.
Few places in the Midwest feature such a diversity of
scenery.
All trails are clearly defined. Please stay on designated
trails and routes.

■ All motorcycles using the trail system must have
a Jackson County sticker.
■ All ATVs must have a state registration sticker.
Nonresidents must have a trail pass.
■ When operating near a dwelling or residential
area, or passing a pedestrian or horseback rider,
the speed limit shall not exceed 10 MPH.
■ Warning: Motorcycles and ATVs are prohibited
in areas posted with the symbol �. Violations
will result in the issuance of citations.
■ All ATV trails are marked with orange posts and
blazes.
■ The Black River Area provides 25 miles of

Mountain Biking
The off-road biker will find unique trail opportunities
in Jackson County. The Black River State
Forest has 24 miles of designated mountain bike
trails. Trailheads can be found at Castle Mound and
Pigeon Creek Campgrounds. Also you will find
Smrekar and Wildcat cross-country trail heads
northeast of Millston. Our trails take you through
scenic pine and oak forests with terrain that will
challenge you at every level. Our Forestry and Parks
Department has developed the Wazee Lake
Recreational Area which currently provides nine
miles of mountain bike trail. This trail follows the
old Jackson County iron mine sites and provides
breathtaking vistas of eastern Jackson County.
Besides the designated trails, the Black River
State Forest and Jackson County Forest have several
hundred miles of forest and old logging roads which
are open to mountain bike travel and will give you a
one-of-a-kind off-road experience. See Map and

Hiking
Hiking trails abound in both the state and county
forest land. Follow winding trails along hills and
valleys, all the while catching glimpses of abundant
wildlife. Many plant and wildflower species can be
seen and you may even find wild lupine, an essential
source of food for the endangered Karner Blue
Butterfly. See Map and Trail Guide for detailed

Horse Trails
The Black River State Forest provides 20 miles of
horse trails through rustic pine and oak forest. The
trailhead, near the East Fork Campground, is located
in a twelve-site campground developed specifically
for horse riders. See Map and Trail Guide for

Swimming
There are plenty of swimming areas throughout
Jackson County such as Lake Arbutus, Wazee Lake
Recreation Area, Pigeon Creek Flowage and Lake
Lee in Millston. All of these locations offer easy
parking, sandy beaches, picnic areas and much
more. Great fun for the entire family.

The 18 hole Skyline Golf Course is a golfer’s
paradise that is laid out over acres of undulating and
wooded hills. You will be fascinated by the scenic
beauty and design of the back 9 which carves
through a beautiful oak and pine forest. Skyline
Golf Course is located at 612 N. 11th Street in

Canoeing/Kayaking
There’s something about a canoeing or kayaking
adventure that transports a paddler to a different
time and place. Something about the simple watercraft
combined with the rhythm of the paddle and
the natural surroundings makes paddling a true
escape from reality.
For the paddler looking to really get away from it
all, you can’t do better than the Black River. Perched
at the northernmost reaches of Wisconsin’s driftless
country, a geological region of the state that was left
unaffected by the steamroller effect of the glaciers,
Black River Country combines elements of the unglaciated
region and the Northwoods to create a scenic
variety that is unmatched.
This beautiful part of Wisconsin takes its name
from the Black River which flows for 160 miles to
its confluence with the Mississippi River.
In the section of the Black River near Black River
Falls, the river cuts its way through a rugged and picturesque
wilderness, offering wide bends, scenic
rock outcroppings and numerous sandbars.
The sandbars are one of the many reasons why
paddlers love this river. A sandbar in the middle of
the Black River is the perfect place for camping, picnicking
or soaking up rays and sunbathing away the
afternoon. Up and down the river, you’ll find these
inviting bits of sandy real estate.
Popular paddling routes on the Black River range
from two to five hours. Paddlers who are in no rush
and want to camp along the way could spend several
days or even a week on the river. If you’re an
angler, you’ll want to bring your fishing rod. The
smallmouth bass fishing on the Black River is fantastic.
Northern pike and muskie also inhabit the
river, so be ready for a fight.

Fishing
Jackson County features lakes and streams to
accommodate a variety of fishing all year round.
The Black River is well known for muskie, walleye,
and smallmouth bass. Excellent summer and winter
fishing can be found in both Lake Arbutus and the
upper Black River Falls flowage located on the
Black River. There are private cranberry flowages
located throughout Jackson County providing excellent
fishing opportunities. Merlin Lambert County
Park provides boat access to flowages that hold
large numbers of pan fish, northern pike, muskie,
and bass.

Hunting
With approximately 200,000 acres of public lands
and a bountiful supply of deer, it is not surprising
that Jackson County is known as the “Deer Capital
of Wisconsin.” The Jackson County Forest and
Black River State Forest provide a perfect habitat for
deer, ruffed grouse, squirrel, and wild turkey. Dike
17 and the Black River bottoms provide excellent
waterfowl hunting for ducks and geese.
County and state campgrounds are open for fall
camping and many commercial and private facilities
are available as well. Be a responsible hunter and
know whose land you are hunting, and always get
permission from the owner before hunting on private
land.

Ice skating enthusiasts can enjoy a variety of
skating opportunities in Black River Falls. The City
maintains a rink at

Cross-Country Skiing
The Black River State Forest has 24 miles of the
finest cross-country ski trails in Wisconsin. The
trails are groomed for skaters and traditional skiers
and provide a variety of skill levels, from beginner to
expert. Forested, hilly terrain offering splendid scenic
views is combined with stretches of level landscape.
One candlelight ski event is offered each year.
Two trailhead parking lots are provided. To access
the Wildcat Trail Parking Lot: from I94, take Exit
#128. Go East on County Road O for 1/4 mile, then
North onto North Settlement Road for approximately
three miles. To access the Smrekar Trail Parking
lot: from I94, take Exit #128. Go East on County
Road O for four miles, then left onto Smrekar Road

Snowmobiling
Jackson County has over 300 miles of groomed
snowmobile trails which connect to 500 miles of
trails in surrounding counties. Connections can be
made to every trail in the state. Our trails offer the
unique experience of varied terrain. On the west side
of the county the trails wind through forest and agricultural
land. The rolling landscape is quite steep in
places, which is characteristic of the Coulee country
of western Jackson County, and certainly adds to the
challenge. In eastern Jackson County the trails
meander through heavily wooded areas and a gentler,
more level grade. Choose your path. The
scenery is excellent and you will be sure to find well
maintained trails which are groomed frequently,

Snowshoeing
The Black River State Forest has plenty of opportunities
for snowshoeing. Beginners and experienced
snowshoers can find some extraordinary
scenery and woodland wonders by visiting the one
and one-half mile Pigeon Creek Nature Trail in
Millston. Also Perry Creek Park and Castle Mound
State Park in Black River Falls have trails that are
accessible for snowshoeing. Please keep in mind
snowshoeing is not permitted on groomed crosscountry

Bruce Mound
Bruce Mound Winter Sports Area in Clark
County was established in 1948 by the Half Moon
Ski Club. Clark County has operated Bruce Mound
since 1960 and has enhanced winter recreation for
any age group. Bruce Mound is one of Wisconsin's
great attractions with premium hill conditions for
both downhill skiers and snowboarders in a winter
wonderland. Come ski or snowboard seven slopes,
serviced by four lifts, one of which is a 375 foot
vertical with the longest slope of 3000 feet! A
complete rental shop with both ski and snowboard
equipment is available. Bruce Mound also has one
of the best snow tube runs in the state. Five runs are
serviced by a rope tow for hours of fun. The slopes
are lighted for fantastic night adventures, while state
of the art snowmaking and grooming capabilities
make every day like a fresh snowfall. So come and
experience the thrills and see for yourself how Bruce
Mound can be a great time this winter! Prices are
family friendly. Food service is available in the
newly built chalet. Twelve miles north of Black
River Falls on Highway 12/27 to Merrillan, then
three miles east on Highway 95 to Bruce Mound

Wazee Lake
Wazee Lake Recreation Area
Wazee Lake Recreation Area, Jackson County’s
newest and largest park, encompasses 3000 acres of
woodlands and water for your enjoyment.
At the heart of the park is Wazee Lake,
Wisconsin’s deepest lake. Known for its exceptional
water clarity, Wazee Lake has become a popular
destination for scuba diving. Not only can you view
many species of fish in the crystal clear waters, but
also you can search for mythical treasures aboard the
sunken shipwreck. You will find yourself swimming

through an underwater forest perhaps examining
some of the artifacts left behind by the former iron
mining operation. Or you may prefer winter ice diving,
also popular on the lake.
Beach lovers can enjoy the wide, sand beach
area and the clear water for wading, swimming and
diving. Anglers can fish for such popular game fish
as walleye, crappies and bass. A handicap fishing
pier is available. Boats with motors are not allowed
on the lake.
The park also features 12 primitive campsites
and a network of trails, which wind through this
former Jackson County iron mine site offering a
panoramic view of the county’s eastern landscape
for hikers and mountain bikers.

Black River State Forest and Jackson County Forest
Jackson County is home to over 188,000 acres of
state and county forest land. Extensive ATV, motorcycle,
and snowmobile trails wend their way through
woodlands and rolling terrain. Hikers, backpackers,
mountain bikers, cross-country skiers and horse riders
will find designated trails which allow you to
view some of the most spectacular scenery that
Western Wisconsin has to offer. Campers can enjoy
a variety of campgrounds: several family campgrounds,
one indoor group camp, a horse campground.
Day-use picnic and swimming facilities are

Lake Arbutus and
the Village of Hatfield
Lake Arbutus covers about 835 acres. The lake
was formed in the early 1900’s by a dam
impoundment on the Black River for a hydroelectric
facility. Along its nine miles of shoreline one can
find camping facilities that include numerous
fireplaces for picnicking. In addition to three
campgrounds, the lake has six public boat landings.
Lake Arbutus produces walleye and northern
pike, muskellunge, crappie, and bass. The Black
River, feeding the lake and below the dam, has river
catfish as well. There are also several nearby trout
streams.

Ho-Chunk People - People of the Big Voice
Jackson County is the headquarters of the Ho-
Chunk Nation sovereign government and also serves
as home to the highest concentration of the Ho-
Chunk people. Of the 7,200 members of the Nation,
about 5,100 live within the state of Wisconsin and
just over 1,200 reside in Jackson County. Since the
establishment of new settlements in the region, the
Ho-Chunk people have shared their rich culture with
residents opening doors to dialogue, trade, and the
great artistry of their traditional crafts.
Today the evolution of these early relationships
are still evident as the Nation, their members, and
other residents of the county engage in commerce,
partnerships, and shared governance to highlight the
uniqueness of this beautiful and historic place in
Wisconsin.
The Ho-Chunk Nation holds several events
throughout the year, none more promoted than the
Memorial and Labor Day weekend gatherings held
at the Andrew Blackhawk Memorial Pow-Wow
Grounds, located on State Highway 54 east of Black
River Falls. The pow-wows held during these celebrations
feature respected warriors from all nationalities
raising over 100 flags in honor of the veterans
who have proudly served and walked on.
The Ho-Chunk Nation continues to make great
strides in strengthening their cultural identity as well
as growing in the economic and personal relationships
made over the years. Following a prior
Presidential proclamation in support of language
revitalization, the Ho-Chunk Nation bridged further
relationships with colleges and school districts to
share this unique treasure.
In 2011, the new administration and several
district legislators have provided a progressive
breath in the tribal government. For more

Black River State Forest
Camping and Picnic/Day-Use Areas
The Black River State Forest offers three campgrounds: East Fork on the east fork of the Black River near
Hatfield, Pigeon Creek located near Millston and Castle Mound located near Black River Falls. Castle Mound has
electric sites, but all three campgrounds allow you to experience nature in the true sense. Pigeon Creek has a sand
beach on Pigeon Creek Flowage. Our area also offers you several fine community campgrounds located in
Merrillan and Hixton. Gile Memorial Park on Oakwood Lake in Merrillan with twenty electric sites and a scenic
waterfall is a favorite for highway travelers.
State Campgrounds
Contact Reserve America to make camping reservations for Indoor Group, East Fork, Pigeon Creek and Castle
Mound State Campgrounds 1-888-947-2757. All others are first come-first served.
All campgrounds contain safe drinking water and sanitary facilities. They are patrolled by law enforcement
personnel for public protection.
Primitive camping is allowed by backpackers who are hiking and carrying their food and gear. Backpackers
must obtain a permit before setting out and camp at areas designated by permit.
Off-site camping is allowed during the deer gun season only by hunters in designated areas by permit only.
Pets shall be kept on a leash not more than 8 feet long. Pets are not allowed in any building, picnic area,
swimming beach, or ski trail (when used for cross-country skiing). Owners must clean up after their pets.
Fires: It is unlawful to start, tend, or maintain a fire on the ground or to burn refuse except in fireplaces or fire
rings.

Jackson County
and Village Campgrounds & Picnic Areas
There are many camping facilities located in Jackson County sure to suit every taste. Public campgrounds
can be found in both Jackson County and the Black River State Forest. Jackson County Forestry and Parks offers
two campgrounds on beautiful Lake Arbutus. East and West Arbutus provide electric sites, showers, flush toilets,
and boat access to the lake. East Arbutus has a large sand beach and swimming area. Merlin Lambert Park and
Spaulding Pond Park located in the Jackson County Forest are favored by campers who prefer unadorned,
natural surroundings. Merlin Lambert Park features a boat launch with access to Potter’s Flowage. Crawford
Hills Campground offers camping to ATV and motorcycle enthusiasts. This park serves as a major trailhead for
obtaining access to county and state trail systems. Users are allowed to operate their machines in the park to
gain access to the trails.
County Campgrounds
Vehicle Admission and Dive Fee Required. Motor vehicles require an admission sticker to use East and
West Arbutus and Wazee Lake Recreational Area from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. This
fee was instituted to protect campers from excess traffic and unnecessary disturbances.
Park and Office Hours. Parks are open to visitors from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The park office is open daily with
extended hours on weekends.

Quiet hours 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Campsites must show occupancy the first night of the permit, unless other arrangements are made with the Park
Manager.
If a site is left unoccupied, the site will be reassigned.
One camping unit per campsite unless authorized by management.
Each campsite is set up for one family unit. (A non-family unit consists of not more than 5 persons.)
All camping permits expire at 3 p.m.
Permits may not exceed 21 nights per campsite.
No refund of camping fees.
You may extend your stay by renewing your permit by 10 a.m. on the expiration date.
Off-Road Vehicles may drive only on designated trails and areas. No off-road vehicle use is allowed in any
campground except Crawford Hills ATV-Motorcycle Park.
Fires and Fireworks. Due to fire danger in our area, fire must be used cautiously. Fires must be in designated
fire rings or grills. Campfires may not be left unattended at any time. Fireworks are not allowed.
Pets may not be left unattended. The pet must be leashed at all times while in the park area. Leashes should
be no more than 8 feet in length.

offers visitors a chance to drive their motorcycles and ATVs along single-track motorcycle trails through

Merlin Lambert County Park and Campground. Once the site of a logging camp in the 1800’s, Merlin Lambert County Park is now a
rugged out-of-the-way park in the Jackson County Forest. Its location on Potter’s Flowage attracts anglers in search of
pan fish, muskellunge and bass. 20 campsites, drinking water, boating, hiking, playground. Fee or park sticker.

Turn south and continue for 4 miles.
Spaulding Pond County Campground maintained by City Point Township. 25 rustic campsites, drinking water, swimming,

Wazee Campground and Recreation Area. The former site of an iron mine, Wazee Lake attracts scuba divers due to its clarity.
15 miles of hiking/biking trails may give visitors a glimpse of two endangered species that inhabit the park: the
timber wolf and the Karner Blue butterfly. 12 campsites, drinking water, boating (no motors), hiking, scuba diving.

The Communities of Jackson County
Black River Falls
Situated on the banks of the Black River, Black River Falls, the largest city in
Jackson County and the county seat, has enjoyed a long and varied history.
Originally settled by Jacob Spaulding, the town was destroyed by fire in 1860
and rebuilt in 1861 and has since survived several floods and other calamites.
Today visitors enjoy all that Black River Falls has to offer: boating, fishing,
canoeing, rafting, scuba diving. Visit downtown for great shopping, experience
our numerous parks, golf our 18-hole golf course, or walk our 4.1 mile
Foundation Trail around the city.

Alma Center
Located in the north central part of Jackson County on Highway 95, Alma
Center is known as the “Strawberry Capital” of Wisconsin. Every June, they
host the Strawberry Festival. For family fun come enjoy the crafts, flea market,
parade, carnival and best of all the “Strawberry Shortcake.” Visit the
picturesque Turtle Pond Park and experience the peaceful charms of small
town Wisconsin.
Brockway
The township of Brockway, located on the east side of the Black River, was carved out of
Albion in the early 1890’s. Natural beauty abounds in the Black River State Forest,
Jackson County Forest, Castle Mound State Park and Wazee Lake Recreation Area. The
whole family can experience outdoor recreation with extensive ATV, snowmobile, bicycle
and hiking trails. Try one of the great lodging experiences, test your luck at a casino or
visit a cranberry industry operation.
City Point
Located in northeast corner of Jackson County, the township of City Point was
created from the town of Sullivan in 1889. Although Sullivan is no longer
around, City Point has survived thanks in part to the timber industry, and the
many cranberry bogs in the area.

Hatfield
The village of Hatfield, nestled in the pines in west-central Wisconsin on the border of
Jackson and Clark Counties, was once the favorite hunting ground of the Ho-Chunk Nation.
Now it is a friendly resort town and home to Lake Arbutus, an 840 acre lake. Along with
the many vacation accommodations, you will find opportunities for swimming, boating,
fishing, water skiing, canoeing and kayaking as well as for ATVing and snowmobiling.
Hatfield also hosts several flea markets each year along with Hatfield Fun Days on the third
weekend in September.
Hixton
Hixton, located on I-94 at the junction of Highway 95, was an important village in early
Jackson County. With the Trempealeau River, and Lowe, Tank, and Stony Creeks’ irrigation,
rich farmland could be found almost anywhere across the township. The community
hosts an annual 4th of July celebration with activities for the whole family: parade, softball
tournament, music, food, kids activities and, of course, fireworks at dark. If antiques
are your thing, Hixton has several fine antique stores in and near the downtown area..

The Communities of Jackson County continued...
Melrose
Located 16 miles southwest of Black River Falls, Melrose is a small community
nestled in the hills and valleys of the coulee region. Melrose hosts several events
each year including a 4th of July celebration, Melrose Field Days in July and an
annual Corn Broil in August. In addition, Melrose offers recreation for all ages
with two parks, ball diamonds, a basketball court, volley ball and tennis area,
canoe rentals and a swimming pool.
Millston
The township of Millston, in south central Jackson County, is known as
“The Friendly Village.” Small in size but big in spirit, Millston hosts
several events during the year--the Millston Car Show in May, Field
Days in August, and the Labor Day Celebration in September. Home to
most of the Black River State Forest, the area includes miles of ATV,
snowmobile, hiking and ski trails.
Northfield
A friendly dairy community located on I-94 at the junction of Highway 121,
Northfield is blessed with scenic rolling hills and beautiful country churches.
Each year in August they host the York-Northfield Rodeo.
Merrillan
Merrillan is located 11 miles north of Black River Falls.
Oakwood Lake, Halls Creek and Trow Lake are just one mile
southeast of town. Summer and winter activities abound. So
take a break from your hectic life and come camping, hiking,
fishing and picnicking. Or in the winter come to Bruce
Mound, located three miles from town, to go downhill skiing,
cross-country skiing, or tubing.
North Bend
The village of North Bend is located in the southwest corner of Jackson
County. Noted for canoeing and fishing, the village also hosts an excellent
9 hole golf course that embraces the scenic Black River. The village
also holds its annual North Bend Days celebration the third weekend
in June. Come enjoy the food, fun, music, canoe races and more.
Taylor
Taylor, located 14 miles northwest of Black River
Falls, is a small village with friendly people ready to
greet you. Taylor provides a beautiful wood-side park
with a playground, tennis courts, volleyball, baseball
and a picnic area. A hiking trail is located along the
Trempealeau River. The village celebrates Taylor Old
Fashion Days every year the first weekend in June.

Birding Hotspot
Black River Country is known as a birding
hotspot in west central Wisconsin. The more than
188,000 acres of protected forest lands abound with
trails and wildlife. Its location right off Interstate 94
makes it a favorite outdoor escape for travelers
coming through Wisconsin.
This picturesque region of rugged pine forests
offers outstanding birding. One of the best locations
is an area known as Dike 17. Located on the easternmost
border of the Black River State Forest
along Settlement Road, this refuge area is not only
known for birding, but also other species of wildlife
can be found such as the eastern timber wolf, the
Massasauga rattlesnake and the endangered Karner
Blue Butterfly.
During the summer, the lush green wetland is
alive with activity. Sandhill crane, numerous shorebirds
and waterfowl use the area. Kingfisher, heron,
egret and several raptor species are also common
sights, as are a variety of songbirds that utilize the
excellent upland habitat that surrounds the wetlands.
Aside from the great birding, the area offers
wonderful views of the beautiful Black River
Country landscape. One visit and Dike 17 will
probably be number one on your list of favorite
Wisconsin birding locations.

Karner Blue Butterfly
The Karner Blue Butterfly thrives in the central and
northwestern portions of the state of Wisconsin.
Jackson County is home to this species that was listed
as endangered in 1992. The habitat of the butterfly
consists of pine barrens, oak savannas and open
prairies. Karner Blues depend on the wild lupine plant,
a beautiful purple wildflower. The pale green
caterpillar feeds exclusively on the leaves of the wild
lupine.
The adult Karner Blue Butterfly is about the size of
a nickel, with a wingspan of about an inch. It can be
identified by the bands of orange spots on the
underside edge of its wings. The top sides of the male's
wings are deep sky blue, while those of the female are
darker blue and brown with orange spots on the edges
of both hind wings. The dorsal sides of the male’s
wings are deep sky blue with black margins bordered
by a white band, while those of the female are darker
blue and brown with orange crescents on the edges of
both hind wings.
Black River Falls hosts the Karner Blue Butterfly
Festival in July each year to educate the public on the
life and habitat of this endangered species. Visitors
can find arts and crafts, music, food and educational
seminars throughout the day. Festival goers can also
take educational tours of the Bauer-Brockway Barrens,
the habitat of the Karner Blue.

Black River Falls Dam
The 100-year old dam across the Black River has
been reconstructed and will be completed in 2012. This
new dam is comparable in looks to the old structure;
however, it has six 27’ wide Tainter gates compared to
eight on the previous structure. Additions have also
been made to the hydroelectric plant of the Black River
Dam with the addition of a third hydroelectric
generating unit that will increase capacity to 1.3
megawatts and up to 12 percent of the energy supply
needed for the Black River Falls area.
The photo shows an artist’s rendition of the
additional hydroelectric unit on the east bank of the
Black River. With the completion of the new dam,
locals and visitors will once again enjoy motorized
boating, swimming and fishing opportunities provided
by the Black River Flowage.
Just a Quick Drive...
Rustic Road
The North Settlement Road (R-54) which runs
from County Highway O north to Highway 54 is one
of Wisconsin’s Rustic Roads.
Wisconsin has designated over 60 roads during
the past several years to preserve what remains of
Wisconsin’s scenic, lightly traveled country roads
for the leisurely enjoyment of bikers, hikers, and
motorists.
These roads are all marked with brown and
yellow signs and each is assigned a number with an
“R” prefix to avoid confusion with the State Trunk
highway numbering.

around a 32-foot flag pole which is illuminated from
dusk to dawn. The Field of Honor is further enhanced
through the use of a series of descriptive monoliths
(monuments) which honor veterans of World War I,
World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam
War. Flowers, shrubs, and a vast lawn area surround the
Field of Honor in greenery and represent the peace and
freedom our veterans have fought to preserve. The two
25-foot flag poles (Prisoner of War/Missing in Action
and the State of Wisconsin) at the entrance to the
memorial also complement the setting. It is located
next to the Black River Area Chamber of Commerce,
120 N. Water Street, Black River Falls.
Highground Veterans Memorial Park
The Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Project, Inc., also known as The Highground, is
a veterans’ memorial park whose mission is
healing and education. Founded in 1984, it has
become a treasure to the state of Wisconsin.
The original tribute honors Wisconsin's
Vietnam Veterans; however, the park has
expanded and now features tributes to WWI,
WWII, WASP, and Korean veterans, a National
Tribute to Native American Vietnam Veterans
as well as a replica Liberty Bell, Meditation
Garden, Gold Star, and Dove Effigy Mound.
The Highground is open 365 days a year, 24
hours a day. The 140 acre park offers four
miles of hiking trails, a handicapped accessible tree house, picnic shelters, public restrooms, and a gift shop open
daily from 10am-5pm. The Highground is a grass roots effort with no ongoing federal or state funding and is
supported exclusively by public donations. The Highground is located on US Hwy 10, four miles west of

Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officers Tribute
In 1994 a group of law enforcement officers and citizens organized
with the purpose of providing positive recognition to Wisconsin
law enforcement officers. This “living tribute” is a highly visible
American gray granite monument of a three dimensional five-pointed
star. Each granite obelisk represents a branch of Wisconsin’s law
enforcement: sheriffs departments, police departments, Wisconsin
State Patrol, Department of Natural Resources and Department of
Justice. The monument can be viewed at the West Bound I-94 Scenic
View Rest Area in Jackson County, near Black River Falls. For more

Cain’s Orchard
Established in 1976, Cain’s Orchard consists of 40 acres of various fruit
including: 20 acres of apples – 20 varieties (Aug. 20-Oct. 30), U-Pick &
Ready Picked 20 acres of Highbush blueberries (July 20-Aug. 30) Saturdays
only – U-Pick. (All dates are weather-dependent and approximate.) Gift shop
features ready-picked apples, blueberry pottery, kitchen needs and novelties,
apple peelers, soup, apple crisp and rice mixes, wildflower honey, salsa, dried
fruit, apple butter and other delights. Located off I-94 at Hixton exit on Hwy.

Sand Creek Brewing Company
In 1856, the Oderbolz Brewery, operated by Ulrich
Oderbolz pioneered Western Wisconsin’s brewing
industry, and he did it in Black River Falls. Today, the
Sand Creek Brewing Company continues that proud
tradition by offering great beers brewed at the same
location Ulrich brewed his beer over 153 years ago.
After several family tragedies in the early 1900’s, the
Oderbolz family sold the brewery to local businessmen
and it was renamed the Badgerland Brewery. In
hindsight it is easy to see that the new owners made a
bad investment as Prohibition shut down the brewery
in 1920.
In late 1996, brothers Jim and Dave Hellman
purchased the old brewery with plans to return it to its
original use. The brothers refurbished the building and
installed a brand-new, state-of-the-art brewing system.
In the late 1990s, Cory Schroeder teamed up with
partner Jim Wiesender and the two set out to research
and build a brewery on the Schroeder farm near
Downing, Wisconsin. With the help of friends and
family, they converted a large shed into the brew
house, and turned a 32-foot refrigerated semi-trailer
into the beer cooler. They scrounged brewery materials
from sales around the Midwest, using pudding tanks to
make the mash and brew kettles. In 1999, the Sand
Creek Brewing Co. became a reality with the first
official brewing of Sand Creek Golden Ale.

Historic Train Cars
A unique display of railroad cars including a 1906
Baldwin ten-wheeler Steam Engine can be seen at Exit
115, at the intersection of I-94 & Highway 12/27, at the
Hoffman Construction Company site. Train lovers can
feast their eyes on not only the 110,000 ton Locomotive
No. 1 steam engine, but also the refurbished tender
with a 5000 gallon water capacity and holds 5 tons of
2 X 4 inch lumps of coal. There is also a Chicago, Rock
Island & Pacific Pullman Coach Car, a Nashville,
Chattanooga & St. Louis Railroad Coach Car, and
sitting atop a Royal American Shows Flatcar, are
several antique Caterpillar tractors that were
abandoned in the woods when the logging boom ended.
The 1906 Baldwin ten-wheeler Steam Engine and the
Pullman Coach Car represented the Chicago, Rock
Island & Pacific Railroad at the 1948 Chicago Rail
Fair.

The Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railroad
Coach Car was part of a train named the Dixie Flyer,
which was conceived in 1892 and provided sleeping car
service from Chicago to Miami, Florida. 50,000
passengers a year rode the train to the developing
Florida vacationland.
Many famous people, including Al Capone, rode
the flyer. In May of 1932, his was not a pleasure trip
for he got off at Atlanta, Georgia, to begin serving his
11 year prison term for tax evasion (found guilty on 5
of the 22 counts) at the Federal Penitentiary in Atlanta.
The steam engine and tender are now registered in
the National Register of Historic Places.

Jackson County Fair
Join us for five days of fun at the Jackson County Fair
held the last week of July though the first weekend of
August each year. Fairgoers can enjoy the Great Plains
Rodeo, a dog agility show and enter the best dessert
contest. Others can enjoy the yearly tractor pull,
including the antique tractors, gymkhana horse show,
demolition derby, entry judging, midway thrills,
exhibits, grandstand entertainment, concessions and
family fun. All this and more can be found on location
at the fairgrounds, Highway 54 West, Black River Falls.

Jackson County Fair Park
The Jackson County Fair Park invites you to visit the
facilities and take advantage of the many opportunities
available. Visitors, fairgoers and exhibitors will enjoy
the spacious grandstand, the dairy, livestock, horse and
small animal barns and the year-round animal arena.
These facilities are available for rent throughout the
year with the exception of the last week in July though
the first week in August.
The Milt Lunda Memorial Arena is used for figure
skating, hockey, and open skate from October through
March. It is available to rent, for any type of event, from
April through September.

Jackson County Historical Society Museum
The Jackson County Historical Society Museum-
Carnegie Building, located at 321 Main Street, next to
the Courthouse Black River Falls, is dedicated to
preserving the history of Jackson County. Housed
within the Carnegie Library, built in 1915, the museum
has two floors of exhibits representing early life in
Jackson County. Some exhibits include the Clay Post
Office, a complete dental office, lumber and logging
displays, and a Native American display featuring
photos, beadwork, and leather items. The research area
includes county business histories, family histories,
biographical files and much more. Hours open to the

The Jackson County History Room is located in
the Black River Falls Public Library, 222 Fillmore

The goals of the History Room are two-fold: 1.

flood of 1911. It has three floors of
exhibits including: early American
clothing; an extensive Jackson
County photo collection for family
research; a Ho-Chunk room of exclusive
early Native American photos,
many taken by Charles Van Schaick;
classic cameras; early photo artifacts
in a studio setting; a logging camp
photo exhibit; and a cranberry display.
The lower level houses our latest
attraction, The Americana Music Room, with many
one-of-a-kind music exhibits including: a variety of
genres and songs from Jackson County and surrounding
area; the recorded music industry from the Edison
cylinder to the current CD; and a display of Green Bay
Packer Music and memorabilia that can also be seen at
the Packer Fan Hall of Fame in Green Bay. It’s truly a
one-of-a-kind music showcase experience. Hours open

Area Parks
The city of Black River Falls and its surrounding area
have many parks, one of which is the 44-acre Lunda
Community Park.
This multi-season park focuses on entertainment
and the environment and offers the Hoffman Aquatic
Center, a large community shelter, picnic areas, ball
fields and court, a band shelter, a children’s play area,
a pond, scenic overlooks, and walking/running/biking
trails. The aquatic center features a heated pool, body
slides, drop chutes, umbrella and arch sprays, geysers
and tumble buckets. The Lunda Community Park also
hosts the Black River Falls Rotary Club Skatepark built
in honor of the 100th anniversary of Rotary
International.
The Skatepark features a 9,600 square foot unique
flowing course that accommodates all skill levels and
riding styles for skateboarders. It is located near the
Hoffman Aquatic Park.
One of the beautiful assets in Black River Falls is the
scenic 4.1 mile Foundation Trail that circles the city.
Along this scenic walkway at 8th Street, visitors can
find the Foundation Trail Park. Along with picnic style
seating near beautiful Town Creek, visitors can view
donor purchased personalized concrete pavers where
the proceeds provide maintenance funds for the trail.
Many people have used the trail for walking, running
and biking since it was completed in 2000. The trail
winds along the Black River, the Town Creek, near the
Golf Course, through the Lunda Community Park, near
other parks, past the high school, fair grounds, Pine
View Care Center, and in the downtown area.
The 10-foot wide paved trail has two underpasses,
lights, a bridge, benches, and picnic tables and is, as
many people say, a breathtakingly beautiful journey
around the city.

M60 tank, and a Cobra Attack
Helicopter.

Jackson County and Surrounding Area Historic Murals
The Jackson County Historic Mural Project came
from an idea presented by Sue Sampson, an artist from
Black River Falls. Individuals, organizations and businesses
from Black River Falls, and the surrounding
communities have commissioned her to paint the original
historic murals celebrating the history, culture,
heritage and ethnicity of Jackson County, Wisconsin.
The murals can be viewed at the following locations:
• The Flood of 1911 – This mural depicts the flood of
1911 that washed away 42 acres of the downtown
business district of Black River Falls. A total of 100
buildings were lost or destroyed; however, miraculously
no lives were lost. Location: 120 North Water
Street, Black River Falls.
• The Black River Dam Mural – This mural depicts
the history of the various dams located on the Black
River at Black River Falls, with the newest dam to be
finished in 2012. To capture more of the precious
resource the river provides, a six-gated spillway with
an integrated third hydroelectric unit on the east side
of the river produces even more energy than previously
provided. Location: 120 North Water Street,
Black River Falls.
• Republican 150th Anniversary – Four Presidents -
Lincoln, Reagan, Eisenhower and Roosevelt are
depicted on this mural, celebrating the 150th
anniversary of the Republican Party. Location:
Corner of Water Street and Main Street on the Farm
Urban Realty Building.
• Wisconsin Cranberries – Depicts a Native American
raking cranberries. Location: Main and South First
Street, Black River Falls.
Dr. Eugene Krohn and the Medicine Wagon
Location: Currently under renovation.
Krueger’s Service – This mural depicts the Krueger
family history from 1940-2003. The family owned
business involved operating a taxi service, the sale of
gas, tires, and recreational equipment and general
automotive service. Location: Main and North First
Street, Black River Falls, on the side of River Haven
Spa & Salon.
• Hoffman Construction Company – Fourth generation
construction company. Location: Corner of
Main and Water Street, Black River Falls, on the
Farm Urban Building.
• Lunda Construction Company – Award winning
bridge builders – Depicts several past projects.

• Millis Transfer – Depicts history and growth of family

• Hagen’s Historic A&W Root Beer Stand – Building
to the east of the mural is part of the original A&W
Root Beer Stand. Location: 2 East Main Street,

• Mosser Lee Mural – Depicts the mossing industry in
Jackson County. Location: W6585 Highway O,
Village of Millston, on the Mosser Lee building.
• Deer Capital of Wisconsin – Depicts a typical deer
camp in Jackson County. The men in this mural were
from the Hixton area. Location: 145 East Main
Street, Hixton, on the Hixton Village Hall building.
• Moe Family Mural – Depicts the four-generation
Moe family history. Location: 33 Main Street,
Black River Falls, on the Moe Hardware building.

The Black River Dam Mural

• The Jackson County Fair – This 8 X 20 ft. mural was
commissioned by the Jackson County Agricultural
Society (JCAS) to celebrate the past history of the
Jackson County fairs. The mural portrays many of the
old buildings and past traditions that reflect Jackson
County’s heritage. There are limited edition prints
and artist proofs available at Sampson Galleries, Inc.
with the proceeds going to JCAS to fund improvements
and enhancements at the fair grounds.

• Town of Brockway Mural – Depicts the history of the
logging industry, along with pictures of Millis
Transfer, Perry Creek Cranberry Corp., Waughtal
Farms and Lunda Construction. Location: 236
Gebhardt Road, Highway 27 South, in front of the
Brockway Town Hall.
• The Mindoro Cut – This cut located at the highest
point on State Highway 108 between Mindoro and
West Salem is 74 feet deep and 25 feet wide. It was
hand-hewn out of hard rock in 1907-08. All work was
completed with only horse-drawn equipment and
hand tools. As far as known, it is the second largest
hand-hewn cut in the nation. Location: Highway
108, Mindoro, Wisconsin, on the Farmington Town
Hall.
• The Mindoro Boardwalk – For a century The
Boardwalk has served as home to many local businesses
and has witnessed many Mindoro Historical
Events. This scene recreates the celebration that took
place on The Boardwalk back in 1918 when Mindoro
welcomed home our WWI hometown heroes.

mounds, located on this farm, are illustrated in this

Karner Blue Garden Club
The Karner Blue Garden Club (KBGC) formed in
1995 with a strong desire to enhance the beauty of the
Black River Falls area. Currently the club boasts 39
members, many of which are Master Gardeners. The
club generously contributes hundreds of hours each
year to maintain 54 flower beds throughout the community
along with more than 70 hanging baskets
placed along Main and adjacent streets. The KBGC is
supported through membership, generous benefactors,
Black River Falls City Recreation Department, volunteer
support from the community and various local
organizations.
