ULTRASEAL
Polyurethane Waterproofing Membrane
PRODUCT
Bostik Ultraseal is a one component flexible polyurethane
wet area waterproofing membrane supplied in trowel/brush
or rollable grade.
DESCRIPTION
Bostik Ultraseal is a high performance flexible one
component trowel/brush or roller applied poly-urethane
waterproofing membrane specifically designed for wet area
applications. Ultraseal can be over-applied with
conventional grout toppings or ceramics adhesives prior to
application of wearing toppings or surfaces (such as tiles
etc).
RECOMMENDED USES
• Waterproofing internal and external wet area (refer to
precautions)
• Waterproofing balconies, podiums, kitchens, toilets,
bathrooms, floors and walls prior to application of
surface wearing toppings
• Use on concrete slabs, cement rendered concrete,
masonry, fibre reinforced cement sheeting, water
resistant plasterboard and plywood
• Waterproofing shower recess bases
• Waterproofing and sealing of planter boxes.

PACKAGING
Ultraseal is available in 15 litre (18.5kg) pail and 4 litre
pail. Ultraseal is available in 600ml (735gm) sausages.
COVERAGE
Applied by brush or roller, 1 litre will cover 0.75 metres
squared (M²) at 1.3mm wet film thickness.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preparation Instruction Steps
The following instruction steps as listed may not be
applicable in every application. They are provided to
ensure the correct procedure is followed.
All surfaces must be clean, dry and free of voids, curing
compounds, projections, loose materials, oils, grease,
sealers and determined to be structurally sound before the
application of Bostik Ultraseal . New concrete must have
cured for 28 days. Do not apply over concrete slabs
containing a high moisture content, refer to Bostik Moisture
Seal vapour barrier, technical data sheet regarding
application. Particularly rough surfaces should be filled
using a recommended floor-leveling compound making
sure to follow manufacturer instructions for preparation,
application and curing time.
2. Corner Treatment
All corners where Ultraseal is to be applied should be
rounded off by the caulking gun application of Bostik
Ultraseal Fillet & Seal. The sealant should be applied direct
into all (to the intending tile height) wall/wall, wall/floor,
hob/floor and hob/wall corners, with enough sealant to
provide a tooled off triangular fillet or cove of 8mm width.
The sealant bead should be firmly tooled (pressed) into
corner with a narrow spatula leaving the face slightly
concaved. Sealant should be allowed to achieve initial
surface set (approx. 45 minutes) before applying Ultraseal .
3. Waste Outlets
Waste outlets, pipes or sealant wastes may be found flush
or raised from floor base. If a gap is present around the
water outlet pipe or sewer this should be filled and sealed
with Bostik Ultraseal Fillet & Seal and tooled off level with
the floor base. This system should also be carried out
around any other pipe, drain or flashing penetrations within
the area to receive membrane. For PVC pipes it is
recommended that Bostik Primer 5077 is used prior to
application of Ultraseal or Ultraseal Fillet & Seal. The use
of leak control flange waste is recommended.

4. Cracks & Narrow Joint Sealing
If cracks or narrow joints are evident in the floor area or
walls they need to be “chased out” and cleaned by spatula
and stiff brush removing all residue.
After cleaning, fill all cracks and joints up to 3mm wide with
a broad spatula application of Bostik Ultraseal Fillet & Seal.
Cracks and joints greater than 3mm must be filled as
detailed then bridge joint by spreading Bostik Ultraseal
Fillet & Seal, minimum 2mm in depth, 35mm on either side
and over the joint. Allow Ultraseal Fillet & Seal to reach
initial set (approx. 45 minutes) before returning to apply
Ultraseal Waterproofing Membrane to the area to be
waterproofed.
Application of the membrane
A minimum cured depth of 1mm must be maintained to
achieve a waterproof membrane, however, it is
recommended a coverage rate of 1.3mm dry film thickness
of Ultraseal be applied. This can be achieved by applying
wet film thickness of 1.5mm at 0.66m²/litre. Once all the
necessary preparation steps are complete the Ultraseal
wet area membrane can be applied.
Trowel\brush grade (Colour Yellow, available in
sausages)
Using the sausage type unit cut the end off behind the
metal clip and extrude onto a work board. (optional)
Alternatively use a 37cm barrel gun (available from Bostik)
to apply the material to corner areas. Commence with
spreading a coat of Ultraseal over all the corners, which
has been previously applied with Ultraseal Fillet & Seal
with a narrow spatula or brush. Continue across the wall to
floor corners.
Taking the flat or corner trowel (optional method of
smoothing material in corners) apply the Ultraseal down
the corners adjacent from the intending tile height,
spreading 200mm out on each wall. Continue 200mm
width across the bottom of the walls abutting shower base
or upstand.
Smooth off the applied Ultraseal with paintbrush. For
shower areas repeat the same procedure over the
complete shower base working out and over the hobs if
fitted. This should now see Ultraseal evenly spread up all
corners to the intending tile heights and out 200mm each
side, up the wall base 200mm and completely cover the
shower base and over the hobs if fitted.
This will present the minimum cover to provide a
waterproofing membrane. Ultimate cover would be to
completely coat the whole shower recess wall areas up to
the intending tile height with Bostik Ultraseal.
The same wall to floor corner application system could be
repeated in other areas such as large bathrooms, kitchen,
toilet or laundry areas.
To enhance grout or tile adhesive adhesion a light
broadcast of fine dry sand could be spread into the still
tacky Ultraseal.
Rollable Grade (Colour Sandstone)
For large horizontal wet areas such as upstairs bathrooms,
kitchens, balconies or podium’s Ultraseal (R)rollable would
be most suited. Once preparations and upturns have been
completed open the 15litre pail of membrane and pour a
liberal amount onto the substrate and spread by use of
squeegee or roller. Move the material around and cross
roll to ensure an even flow. If the product looks
transparent apply more material. This is an inbuilt safety
feature of Ultraseal . If pinholeing occurs due to the state
of the concrete recoat to ensure a complete coverage.
Standing water introduced to freshly applied Bostik
Ultraseal or excessive slab moisture may cause the
membrane layer to swell. If this should occur, the affected
area should be cut out and replaced with fresh Ultraseal
once the slab is completely dry.
To enhance grout or tile adhesive adhesion a light
broadcast of fine dry sand could be spread into the still
tacky Ultraseal .
Tiling and Mortar Bed Covering
This may be carried out after Ultraseal has been allowed to
cure approx. 24 hours at a temperature of 25°C (slightly
longer in lower temperatures). To eliminate possible
surface contamination or damage it is recommended tiling,
mortar bedding or finished flooring should be carried out as
soon as possible after full cure of membrane application,
as extended periods of exposure will require the provision
of membrane protection from following trades.
TILE ADHESIVE
Proprietary commercially available tile adhesives may be
used such as ASAFLEX, MEGAFIX, CONFLEX and
FIXALL mixed with MEGALASTIC, all available from
Architectural and Structural Adhesives (ASA) or similar
type products. Solvent free, cementitious-based tile
adhesive comparable with the tile type should be used. It
must be applied in strict compliance with manufacturer's
instructions. A light spread of fine, dry sand into the
uncured Ultraseal can enhance adhesion of mortars and
compatible tile adhesives. For recommendations regarding
testing of tile adhesives over Ultraseal contact Bostik for
details.
PRIMING
Prior to any use it is recommended that a small amount of
the selected Bostik Ultraseal membrane be applied on the
substrate surface to test adhesion.
Bostik Ultraseal polyurethane membranes generally do not
require priming except in applications where the membrane
is to be applied to a substrate that is damp or with
specially treated surfaces or of particularly unusual surface
characteristics. Consult Bostik Technical Department for
assistance if such circumstances exist.
MOIST OR DAMP SURFACES
Bostik Ultraseal should not be applied to surfaces, which
are moist or damp. Applications to these surfaces can
result in adhesion failure and or bubbling and subsequent
pinholeing of the surface of the membrane. New concrete
must be cured for 28 days.
Bostik Ultraseal Membrane is not vapour a barrier nor
designed to stop a hydrostatic head of water pressure.
If substrate moisture is evident Bostik Moisture Seal (a
vapour barrier) must be applied and allowed to fully cure
before the introduction of Ultraseal Wet Area Membranes
(refer technical data sheet for Moisture Seal).
MIXING
No mixing is required, simply use directly from pail or
sausage.
PRECAUTION
• Bostik Ultraseal Membranes are not vapour barriers
nor designed to stop a hydrostatic head of water
pressure. (For this application Bostik Moisture Seal, a
vapour barrier, is recommended).
• Ultraseal should not be installed on wet, contaminated,
or friable substrates.
• Ultraseal should not be applied to surfaces with
special protective or cosmetic coatings without prior
consultation with Bostik.
• Rate of cure will be inhibited when air or substrate
temperatures are below +5°C or if applied over a
vapour barrier or untreated concrete.

• Ultraseal should not be applied greater than 2mm in
depth in one application as the likelihood air
entrapment foaming or blistering may occur
• Membranes require atmospheric moisture to fully cure.
They should not be used in totally confined or air free
spaces.
• Mortar bed screeding or tiling should not be carried out
until Ultraseal has cured for 24 hours.
• The minimum time to allow to cure (16 hours or
overnight). To eliminate possible surface
contamination or damage it is recommended the
finished floor covering should be carried out as soon
possible after full cure of Membrane application as
extended periods of exposure will require the provision
of membrane protection.
• Bostik Ultraseal Membranes should never be used as
exposed finishes or top coatings on interior or exterior
applications, or as a wearing coarse for foot or vehicle
traffic.
• Any intended application of Bostik Ultraseal
Membranes outside of intended use should be first
referred to Bostik Technical Services for approval.
• Bostik Ultraseal Membranes should never be used as
exposed finish or top coating exterior membranes.
Bostik have a range of self-adhesive and torch on
sheet membrane systems that should be used in these
applications. The cure rate of Bostik Ultraseal will be
inhibited if applied to substrates with a surface
temperature below 5°C or where a vapour barrier has
been applied.
• Do not apply in temperatures greater than 35°C.
P.A.T.S (Pretested Adhesion To Substrate)
Programme
Bostik offer a service in which a program has been
established to eliminate potential field problems by pretesting
Bostik adhesives with samples of building materials
to which the adhesive will be applied. This service is
available on large projects where pre-application testing
will aid in determining the proper surface preparation
method to achieve optimum adhesion. Consult a Bostik
representative for further information.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
On contact, uncured sealant causes irritation. Gloves and
protective goggles must be worn during application and
use.
• Avoid contact with skin, eyes and avoid breathing in
vapour.
• Wear protective gloves when mixing or using
• If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons
Information Centre.
• If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Give a glass of
water.
• If skin contact occurs, remove contaminated clothing
and wash skin thoroughly for a minimum of 15 minutes
and see a doctor.

CLEAN-UP
Bostik Ultraseal can be cleaned from equipment with
Bostik 9907 or Xyol before fully cured. Wear eye
protection and use in well-ventilated area. Bostik Handi-
Clean Towel will remove Ultraseal from skin prior to full
cure.
STORAGE
Stored in original sealed container under cover in dry
conditions, Ultraseal has a shelf life of 12 months
in original unopened containers if stored between
5°C and 30°C.
