Home Cooking for A Home of Our Own
gala raises more than $1 million
Words cannot capture our gratitude for the
outpouring of generosity we have experienced
during the first capital campaign of Boston
Health Care for the Homeless Program. On
April 30, we held our first major fundraising
event—Home Cooking for A Home of Our
Own—at the Boston Harbor Hotel. This special
evening marked yet another milestone in
our journey to build a center of excellence to
provide comprehensive medical, psychiatric,
and dental care for the thousands of homeless
men, women and children in greater Boston.
In coming forward to share our story publicly,
we have discovered an unparalleled commitment
by our community to help us gather the
financial resources needed to provide the best
care we could envision for this fragile population.
We have been overwhelmed by the
response from this compassionate city, and
we were awed by the dedication of Suzy and
Jack Welch and Kim and Jim Pallotta to fill
the Boston Harbor Hotel with such generosity.
Thanks to their leadership, the event raised
over $1.2 million for our new building.
For a program that has been called “Boston’s
best kept secret” by Mayor Menino, Boston
Health Care for the Homeless Program is certainly
not a secret any longer. The event has
ushered us into the homestretch of our capital
campaign and brought us into Boston’s public
focus. As we work diligently to raise the final
$9.7 million, we remain ever grateful to those
who have helped us reach this point in the
campaign. Support from this remarkable night
offers our staff and patients the hope we need
to keep walking toward a home of our own.
Red Sox fans in the room were overjoyed to see
Dennis Eckersley’s name on the program at BHCHP’s
recent capital campaign gala. It might have been easy
to assume that the baseball legend was present simply
to provide celebrity status. Easy, that is, until the star
pitcher reached the podium. Amidst a recounting of
major league statistics and pitching successes, Dennis,
who has been sober himself for nearly two decades,
revealed not only his own struggle with alcoholism,
but his older brother’s battle with addiction and
homelessness.
As Dennis traveled the U.S. to pitch under the bright
lights of major league ball parks, his brother Wally
traveled the streets, moving from city to city, occasionally
appearing where Dennis was playing. Despite
the help of family and friends, Dennis shared how
heartbreaking it was to see his brother struggling
BHCHP has increased its capital campaign goal to
$42 million. Our earlier target of $35 million was
adapted to include a building endowment fund and
projected costs for the future renovations of our existing
Barbara McInnis House. Thanks to the generous
contributions from donors, more than $32 million
its walls, but through the foundation’s generous
leadership gift we are closer to our dream of a new
building. The facility will house our inpatient respite
outpatient primary care clinic, administrative and
