ITHACA BOMBERS VOLLEYBALL JANET DONOVAN Head Coach Janet Donovan enters her 18th season at the helm of the Ithaca volleyball program. Her list of achievements includes a 534-209 record (.719) and 11 trips to the NCAA playoffs. She ranks as Ithaca’s winningest volleyball coach. Hired in 1992, Donovan posted the highest first-year win total (37) by any Ithaca volleyball coach and led the Bombers to an ECAC championship. The following season saw Ithaca start a nine-year streak of NCAA playoff appearances. In 1994 Donovan led the team to a school-record 53 wins and the program’s first berth in the NCAA semifinals. The Bombers were back in the semifinals the following year and made their ninth straight trip to the NCAA tournament in 2001. Ithaca returned to the NCAA playoffs in 2004 and 2005. Last fall’s team won Ithaca’s second ECAC championship along with winning the school’s second New York State title. Donovan was named AVCA region coach of the year and Empire Athletic Association coach of the year in 1993 and 1994. In 1999 she again earned the honor of AVCA region coach of the year. In 1994 she was the Ithaca Journal’s choice as female coach of the year. During her career at Ithaca, 12 players have earned a total of 20 all-America honors. In addition, five Bombers have been named academic JANET DONOVAN all-Americans in that span. A 1987 graduate of Cortland, Donovan was a letter winner on a team that made NCAA regional appearances from 1985 to 1987. She was also the Red Dragons’ team captain in 1987. After scholastic volleyball coaching stints at Tully High School and Lyons Central High School, Donovan took over as coach at Keuka College in 1990. She led the Warriors to a 24-14 mark and a state tournament berth. As a graduate assistant volleyball coach at Humboldt State University in 1991, Donovan helped the Division II Lumberjacks to a 24-10 record and third place in the Northern California Athletic Conference. The non-scholarship institution ended its season ranked 21st in the nation. In addition to her volleyball duties, Donovan is an instructor in the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance. She spent four years as an assistant coach with the Ithaca women’s lacrosse team and five years as an assistant track and field coach. She and her husband, Bill, have two children, Will and Kaci. ADAM RICHWALDER Assistant Coach Adam Richwalder returns to coach the Bombers this year as the Assistant Coach after spending three years as a student coach and volunteer assistant. A graduate of Ithaca, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication in 2006. He is also currently taking part time classes toward a Masters of Science in Communications at Ithaca. Aside from working with the Bombers, ADAM RICHWALDER Richwalder is a volunteer coach with the Southern Tier Girls Volleyball Club. He coached the 18-and-under age group in 2008, and most recently coached the 17-and-under club in the spring of 2009. ITHACA BOMBERS VOLLEYBALL BRIANNA D’ERRICO Graduate Assistant Coach A2009 graduate of Ithaca, D’Errico earned a pair of varsity letters as a member of the volleyball team after transferring from Monroe Community College. She served as a team captain as a senior. D’Errico tallied 507 digs and 68 aces in her Bomber career. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in exercise science. RECORD BOOK The Bombers will look to return to the postseason with a young squad that features nine freshmen and sophomores out of a roster of 14 players. 2008 RECAP: Ithaca went 17-20 overall last season, including 4-4 in Empire 8 play. The team finished fifth in the conference. Setter Corinna Doctor was named to the all-Empire 8 team for the third time in three seasons. KEY LOSSES: Ithaca lost senior Brianna D’Errico to graduation. One of the team’s most versatile players, she tallied 316 digs, 71 service aces and 52 kills as a senior. She tied for the team lead in aces. The Bombers will also be without Jen Heberton and Francine Nikas, who were juniors in 2008. OUTSIDE: Senior Rachel Busch leads the Bombers’ returners on the outside. Among the team’s returning players, she ranked first with 276 kills in 2008. She also picked up 89 digs and 18 blocks as a junior. Sophomores Elizabeth Previte and Karin Edsall will also be major contributors at outside hitter. Previte—who will also see time in the middle—recorded 74 kills her freshman year, averaging more than one per set. Edsall, who saw action mainly at setter as a freshman, had 83 assists and 42 kills. Fellow sophomore Jessica Hoeffner will miss the seasons due to injury. Freshman Stephanie Lavallato and Katie Rickabaugh are newcomers on the outside. RIGHT SIDE: Sophomore Chelsea Hayes will see significant time at opposite. She ranked third on the team with 203 kills last season, averaging 2.18 per set. She also dug 163 balls. Hayes was named Empire 8 Rookie of the Week in recognition of her play at the RIT Invitational. She recorded three double-doubles at the tournament. MIDDLE: Sophomore Kate Thoene will lead the way for Ithaca in the middle. The team’s tallest player, she led the squad with 65 blocks as a freshman. She also totaled 87 kills. Thoene was a key defensive contributor during the season’s first Empire 8 Crossover, tallying 21 kills in four matches. She was named conference Rookie of the Week following the performance. Senior Lindsey Jones, a new addition to the team, will also contribute. Coaching Staff AMANDA HUBBARD Graduate Assistant Coach Athree-time honorable mention to the AVCA all-America squad during her tenure with the Bombers, Hubbard graduated from Ithaca in 2008. In three years, Hubbard ranks in the top-10 in program history in kills (4th, 1,677) and digs (6th, 1,472). She also holds two of the top-10 single season kill totals. Hubbard is currently pursuing a master’s degree in health education. 2009 OUTLOOK RECORD BOOK SETTER: Doctor begins the season ranked second in Bombers history with 4,191 career assists. She needs 1,108 more to become the program’s all-time leader. Doctor has averaged 1,397 assists per season in her career. She holds the school single-season record with 1,603 in 2007, and added 1,194 last season. She added 361 digs and 71 aces as junior. She tied for the team lead in aces, and enters the season ranked sixth in Ithaca history with 233. She needs 50 more as a senior to become the team’s all-time leader in that category. A second-team all-Empire 8 player as a junior, Doctor has been named to the all-conference team in each of her seasons. She was also named to a pair of all-tournament teams. Freshmen Melissa Woodcome and Carly Graham will see time backing up Doctor, as well as at other positions. LIBERO/DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST: Junior Tina Orlandini tallied 701 digs in 2008, the second-highest total in program history. Orlandini had six matches with at least 30 digs, including two with 40. She was named to the all-tournament team at the Bomber Invitational. Classmate Taylor Horton ranked third on the team in both digs (343) and aces (58) as a sophomore. 2009 SCHEDULE: Ithaca opens the season at perennially-ranked Juniata at the Aasics Invitational (Sep. 4-5). The will host their own Bomber Invitational the following weekend (Sep. 11-12). The team will play its conference schedule at two Empire 8 Crossover tournaments. The first will be hosted by Hartwick (Sep. 26-27) and the second by Nazareth (Oct. 24-25). Ithaca will host the New York State Regional Challenge (Oct. 31-Nov. 1) to close the regular season. The team will also compete in tournaments at RIT (Sep. 18-19), Fredonia (Oct. 2-3) and Union (Oct. 9-10), as well as individual matches with Rochester (Sep. 8), Geneseo (Sep. 22), Cortland (Oct. 6) and Oneonta (Oct. 20). 6 bombers.ithaca.edu
