Wim Tonnis Peat Award 2006 to Hans Joosten and Donal Clarke The first Wim Tonnis Peat Awards of IPS were conferred on 6 May 2006 in Hanover, Germany on Dr. Hans Joosten and Mr. Donal Clarke. The awards, each consisting of a framed scroll and a cash prize of 1,000, were presented in recognition of Dr. Joosten’s and Mr. Clarke’s commitment to peatlands and peat, their efforts in advancing and spreading knowledge about the value, benefi ts and use of peatlands, and, in particular, the work these two gentlemen have done for the Wise Use of Mires and Peatlands. 10 PEATLANDS International 1/2006 The International Peat Society confers the Wim Tonnis Peat Award annually to an IPS member who has made a distinguished contribution to peat and peatland science or industry, especially in the promotion of Wise Use. The Award was launched in 2005 in honour of the late Wim Tonnis (1933- 2005), a very committed and active IPS member and former Chairman of the IPS Dutch National Committee who promoted and participated in many important peat projects. On 6 May 2006, before the Annual Assembly of National Representatives in Hanover, the Wim Tonnis Peat Award was conferred for the fi rst time. The IPS Secretariat had received seven nominations from IPS Secretary General Jaakko Silpola, Laureates Hans Joosten and Donal Clarke and IPS President Markku Mäkelä (left to right) in the garden of Hotel Jägerhof in Hanover-Langenhagen after the Wim Tonnis Peat Award Ceremony. Text and photos: Susann Warnecke its members, which were reviewed by the Scientifi c Advisory Board and the IPS Secretariat, before the IPS Executive Board made a fi nal decision on who should receive the award. This year, the Board decided to confer two awards instead of one as Hans Joosten and Donal Clarke together were the driving force behind the most extensive exercise of IPS which involved compiling, editing and publishing the Wise Use Book as well as close cooperation between IMCG and IPS. In their acceptance speeches, the recipients emphasized particularly the need for further cooperation between the two organizations and their members. All nominations for the Award submitted in March/ April 2006 will remain in force until 2008. Further nominations for 2007-2009 can be sent to the IPS Secretariat until 31.12.2006. New Faces in IPS Key Functions New IPS Executive Board Members At the Annual Assembly in Hanover, three new Executive Board members were elected in place of the retiring members Gerfried Caspers, Bernt Hedlund and Matti Hilli.
