Celebrating 50 years of the <strong>MGB</strong>!<br />

In 2012 the <strong>MGB</strong> will be fifty years young... Launched in May<br />

1962, the first <strong>MGB</strong> rolled off the production line at the<br />

Abingdon factory in September of that year and has since<br />

become one of the best loved British sports cars ever produced.<br />

The <strong>MGB</strong> was designed to replace the MGA and to rival MG’s<br />

main competitors of the time, the Triumph TR series. The <strong>MGB</strong><br />

was described as brisk when it was unveiled in 1962, with a 0-60<br />

time of just over 11 seconds and a top speed of just over<br />

100mph it was perfectly placed as an affordable & comfortable<br />

sports car. (Performance figures dependant on model). All<br />

<strong>MGB</strong>’s (except the V8 version) utilised the enduring BMC B-<br />

Series engine. This engine was essentially an enlarged version of<br />

that used in the MGA with the displacement being increased<br />

from 1622cc to 1798cc.<br />

The <strong>MGB</strong> was available as a pretty roadster with convertible roof<br />

or the sportier GT version, styled by Pininfarina, with a fixed<br />

roof. This versatile little sports car boasts a successful history on<br />

track and road, competing in many international races. Its<br />

successes include outright wins in the 1965 Guards 1000 race at<br />

Brands Hatch & the 1966 Marathon de la Route 84hrs at the<br />

Nurburgring. Also the toughness and reliability shone through in<br />

the 1965 Le Mans 24hr race where it finished in a highly<br />

respectable 2nd place in its class.<br />

The <strong>MGB</strong> was in production for 18 years, in which over<br />

500,000 models were produced, thus making it the world’s top<br />

selling sports car of its era, the first to reach half a million and<br />

the top British sports car of all time! Once British Leyland closed<br />

the Abingdon factory in the autumn of 1980, the production of<br />

the <strong>MGB</strong> ceased. Plans to continue making the <strong>MGB</strong> were<br />

rumoured when Aston Martin wanted to buy the Abingdon<br />

factory, however this never happened.<br />

But the legacy of the <strong>MGB</strong> lives on and as we celebrate 50 years<br />

of the <strong>MGB</strong> more and more people are beginning to appreciate<br />

these classics. It has now become one the most popular classics<br />

in Britain!<br />

YEAR EVENT<br />

1962 <strong>MGB</strong> Roadster commences production.<br />

1964 Engine changed from three to five main bearing crankshaft.<br />

1965 Introduction of the <strong>MGB</strong> GT designed by Pininfarina.<br />

1967 “Banjo” type rear axle on roadsters replaced by stronger Salisbury<br />

“tube” type axle.<br />

1968 Mark II models introduced, with all new synchromesh gearbox,<br />

optional automatic gearbox, negative earth electrical system,<br />

optional brake servo.<br />

1969 “Recessed” type front grille introduced, along with “Rostyle” wheels,<br />

new reclining seats (trimmed with vinyl rather than leather), new<br />

steering wheel and switchgear, new badges. Bonnet lid changed<br />

from aluminium to steel.<br />

1971 Further changes to switchgear and minor controls, new “Michelotti”<br />

folding hood introduced, tinted glass standard on GT’s.<br />

1972 Mark III models introduced, dashboard revised with face level vents,<br />

new switchgear, centre console with new ashtray and armrest.<br />

1973 <strong>MGB</strong> GT V8 introduced. New “honeycomb” style front grille, new<br />

steering wheel, further changes to switchgear, vinyl seats replaced<br />

with velour, heated rear window standard on GT’s.<br />

1974 Automatic gearbox discontinued, brake servo as standard, further<br />

switchgear changes.<br />

1975 Rubber bumpers introduced, collapsible steering column, suspension<br />

height raised and minor changes to springs and anti-roll bars, new<br />

instrument binnacle. Limited edition of 750 “Jubilee” <strong>MGB</strong> GT’s<br />

introduced.<br />

1977 New dashboard, instruments, switchgear and steering wheel, electric<br />

engine fans, rear anti roll bars, dual line brake system with servo,<br />

deck chair seats and head restraints as standard.<br />

1979 British Leyland announces closing of factory at Abingdon.<br />

1980 Production of the <strong>MGB</strong> and <strong>MGB</strong> GT ceases in October.

Performance and tuning<br />

These pages contain a range of quality components that will generally<br />

improve the performance and handling of your <strong>MGB</strong>. Remember, before<br />

increasing the power output and speed of any vehicle, you should ensure<br />

that your brakes, steering, chassis etc... can cope with the modifications.<br />

When tuning your car to get more power you need to get more air and fuel<br />

through the system in the right proportions. The first stage is to replace the<br />

restrictive standard exhaust system and air filter, the fuelling would then<br />

Fibreglass panels<br />

Fibre glass panels are offered as an alternative to steel panels primarily for<br />

competition use, where the weight saving can give valuable power/weight<br />

advantages and they are lighter and cheaper to replace if damaged. Our<br />

fibreglass panels are made from good quality materials and finished in white gel<br />

coat. The wings are manufactured as a ‘skin’, featuring the necessary flanges and<br />

rear bracket to allow fitting but do not have any holes or fittings included,<br />

these must be positioned whilst fitting. They are made to chrome bumper<br />

specification, but can be easily modified for rubber bumper cars. Bonnet and<br />

boot lids are available as skins or with frames featuring captive nuts as required.<br />

A good fit and finish can be achieved with these panels but it will take time<br />

and care to get it right. See the Restoration section for fitting hardware.<br />

have to be adjusted to suit. Beyond this you are looking at modifying the<br />

engine internals with a gas flowed big valve cylinder head, performance<br />

camshaft and possibly a bigger bore.<br />

Whilst you are in there you can fit lightened and/or strengthened internals.<br />

Again the fuelling would have to be adjusted to suit, possibly with Weber<br />

carburettors. Other routes to bigger power outputs include supercharging or<br />

nitrous injection.<br />

Spoilers<br />

These spoilers are replicas of original factory items. Fitting a spoiler alters<br />

the airflow around and under the car to give increased stability at speed and<br />

also enhance the look of your <strong>MGB</strong>.<br />

Leyland ST style spoilers<br />

The ST style spoilers were developed by Leyland Special Tuning using a<br />

wind tunnel for works competition cars. This style replaces the front valance<br />

and reduces the ground clearance; it is available plain or with recesses for<br />

lamps or brake ducts. Available in fibreglass or ABS plastic.<br />

Sebring front and rear valances<br />

Designed for works <strong>MGB</strong>’s and MGCs to improve aerodynamics once the<br />

bumpers have been removed.<br />

The front valance features apertures for cooling radiator and brakes and the<br />

rear valance smoothes off the area below the light pods. The front valance is<br />

simply mounted using standard hardware.<br />

The rear valance should be bonded to the car and fared in to the required<br />

finish. Designed for chrome bumper models but can be adapted to fit<br />

Sebring wing set<br />

The MGC GTS was a great looking version of the classic GT shape. The<br />

wide arches give the car a more purposeful stance and aggressive look which<br />

has become a popular choice in various <strong>MGB</strong> race championships. It also<br />

allows the fitting of up to 9J x 15” wheels.<br />

You can recreate that look on your GT or Roadster with our Sebring wing<br />

kits. The wing kit can be used with a choice of valances, either the Sebring<br />

front valance or the Leyland ST style spoiler and the Sebring rear valance.<br />

However, modification to the ST spoiler will be necessary to bring the<br />

valance ends into line with the wheel arch edges. A good fit and finish can<br />

be achieved with these panels but it will take time and care to get it right.<br />

Supplied as a pair of front wings and a pair of rear lower wing sections. We<br />

recommend that the wing set is purchased and offered up for fitting before<br />

any original bodywork is removed. All panels are unpainted fibreglass.<br />

Uprated brake kits<br />

Improving the braking system of your car is essential for fast road, track day<br />

and competition use. These two kits offer Wilwood 4-pot calipers with a<br />

choice of vented or solid discs. Using 4-pot calipers provides greater pressure<br />

across a larger pad area to increase braking efficiency.<br />

Front telescopic damper conversions<br />

This conversion kit is the simplest way to get the benefits of telescopic<br />

dampers for your <strong>MGB</strong>. The main feature of the kit is the specially designed<br />

brackets used to support the telescopic damper. The top bracket fits neatly<br />

under the lever arm damper and the lower brackets bolt to the side of the<br />

wishbone arm. The conversion kit has been designed to retain the lever arm<br />

damper as the upper suspension link, but with the damper valve removed<br />

keeping the fluid to lubricate the mechanism.<br />

This conversion offers improved damping for standard height cars for road<br />

or motorsport use on either <strong>MGB</strong> or BV8s, although some competition<br />

regulations do not allow this conversion. Supplied with brackets, dampers,<br />

Uprated lever arm dampers<br />

We supply new uprated lever arm dampers which are built on the original<br />

Armstrong equipment. Each unit is tested to check its performance against the<br />

design parameters, and the valves are individually set to provide the correct<br />

hydraulic characteristics for the application. For some models, we also supply<br />

reconditioned units on a exchange basis. If your standard units are in good<br />

condition, we stock competition valves should you wish to uprate them, as well<br />

as Penrite shock absorber oils so you can tweak your damping rates. Units are<br />

sold individually but should be fitted in pairs. Where there is a choice, we<br />

suggest the 25% uprated shocks are suitable for fast road and 50% uprated<br />

Uprated front coil springs<br />

After fitting an uprated anti-roll bar and/or a telescopic conversion, the next<br />

stage of suspension tuning is to improve the springs. The ride height of the<br />

<strong>MGB</strong> cannot be reduced by a great deal, but lowered springs with a stronger<br />

spring rate will substantially improve handling.<br />

We now offer our range of coil springs in a new modern specification<br />

material, silicon chrome steel. This material is used in many current<br />

production cars and is lighter than the original chrome vanadium steel,<br />

which will help reduce the ‘un-sprung’ weight, ideal for fast road &<br />

competition cars. These new springs are only supplied in matched pairs.<br />

Negative camber wishbone arms<br />

Fitting these wishbone arms will induce negative camber to the front<br />

suspension, improving turn-in for quicker and safer cornering. They are<br />

recommended for all road cars and are essential for competition. These<br />

wishbone arms are supplied as a car set. Once installed the tracking must<br />

be corrected, we recommend a toe in of between 1/8” to 3/32”.<br />

To get the best from your <strong>MGB</strong>’s handling the suspension should be stiff at<br />

the front and supple at the rear. Our well proven handling kits are a good<br />

way to enhance the handling of your car and will work well with standard or<br />

uprated springs with either lever arm or telescopic dampers. Stiffening the<br />

front reduces body roll, preventing rear wheel lift. Whilst the improved rear<br />

axle location with harder bushes prevents rear end steer. Kits include a front<br />

Our rubber bumper Evolution 2 kit is designed to fit early (1974-76) rubber<br />

bumper cars. Later rubber bumper cars (1976 on) have a rear anti-roll bar as<br />

standard to control body roll induced by higher ride height and heavier car.<br />

Uprated anti roll bar bushes<br />

Outer anti roll bar bushes in nylatron give an approximately 8% increase in<br />

tension for sprint or competition cars, they can be used on all <strong>MGB</strong> anti<br />

roll bars and should always be used with 7/8” or 1” bars. Note: The fitting<br />

of nylatron bushes is best left to someone with engineering experience.<br />

Front coil over conversion<br />

Our conversion coupled with Gaz dampers, brings the <strong>MGB</strong>'s front<br />

suspension up to modern standards of handling and ride by combining the<br />

spring and damper into a single unit. The conversion discards the old lever<br />

arm dampers replacing them with a sturdy top wishbone assembly. Our<br />

dynamic suspension conversion offers many improvements including a more<br />

positive ride, lighter steering and, the ability to adjust the car’s ride height.<br />

These kits are supplied with new lower spring pans, upper wishbones and<br />

mounting blocks, neoprene upper wishbone and damper mounting bushes,<br />

shock absorber unit and spring, mounting hardware and fitting instructions.<br />

Installation is straight forward and the whole conversion can be completed<br />

within 4-5 hours. Many competition regulations do not allow this conversion.<br />

performance. The parabolic shape of the spring allows small bumps and<br />

undulations to be gently absorbed by the thinner section of the spring. As<br />

Anti-tramp bars and fittings<br />

The use of anti tramp bars is highly recommended for cars which have more<br />

than standard power available. They are fitted between the rear spring front<br />

eye bushes and the centre spring mountings on the axle by special brackets,<br />

which are supplied as part of the conversion.<br />

When power is applied suddenly, usually from a standing start, the rear leaf<br />

springs tend to wind up into an S shape, and then revert to normal in a<br />

series of hops, referred to as tramping.<br />

When installing anti-tramp bars with a telescopic damper conversion, care<br />

must be taken to select the correct adaptor kit to match the anti-tramp bar<br />

and adaptor kit.<br />

Lowering the ride height of the car can cause premature contact with the<br />

standard bump stops, resulting in poor handling. You can maximise the<br />

suspension travel by fitting these shortened bump stops, which fit directly to<br />

the crossmember, without alloy spacer.<br />

suspension offer improved damping by replacing the lever arm dampers with<br />

high quality telescopic dampers.<br />

Front conversion kit<br />

The front fitting kit uses specially designed bracket that replace the original<br />

lever arm damper and provide the upper wishbone and damper top<br />

mounting. Due to the location angles of the Bilstein dampers and the<br />

improved geometry of the front suspension, the handling is transformed<br />

whilst retaining ride comfort. The damper fits neatly between the subframe<br />

and the king pin.<br />

Installation of this kit does require permanent modification to the subframe.<br />

Only suitable for <strong>MGB</strong> models.<br />
