VolumE 4, NumbEr 11 NoVEmbEr 2010
We’re getting there-- if you’ve made your pledge for 2011,
thank you. If you haven’t, please prayerfully consider
your 2011 pledge and bring or send it to the church as soon
as you possibly can.
Please know that your pledge helps our parish provide
uplifting worship, Christian formation for all ages, pastoral
care, food and other basic necessities for those in need.
Every pledge is critically important to our common life at
Christ Church— the strength of our pledges determines
the strength of our ministries.
FROM OUR RECTOR
Dear Parish Family,
Just a few days ago, a wise, longtime
member of the parish asked
me, “How are you doing after
two and a half months at Christ
Church?”
“I am savoring the honeymoon,”
I told him.
He smiled and responded quickly,
“What if the honeymoon lasts twenty
years? It doesn’t need to end.”
of course, I am grateful for his
encouragement and if he means
that for many, many years to
come we will continue to work
together with a sense of joy,
excitement and purpose, I say,
“Amen.” You have opened your
hearts and homes to me and my
family in these first months and I
am grateful. (by the way, wasn’t
that Celebration of New ministry
wonderful?) Thanks to your
warm welcome and God’s grace, it
already feels like home. Thank you.
The energy and enthusiasm we
are experiencing on Sunday mornings
are flowing into all of our
life as a parish. In the meetings
that I have been enjoying in your
homes, I hear you saying that you
want to be known and have your
gifts and talents put to good use.
Well, we sure need you at Christ
Church and you are already stepping
up to do more with outreach,
hospitality and ministries to our
youth and children. Thank you.
In the days ahead you’ll be hearing
about new opportunities to
serve through ministries at Saint
Saviour’s focused on the needs of
“at risk” babies, and Christ
Church recently joined the Wake
Interfaith Hospitality Network
to begin a ministry to the homeless.
These initiatives are possible
only because of the dedication of
parishioners who volunteer their
time, talent and treasure. I hope
you will look for ways to connect
more deeply in the life of Christ
Church and let us know if you
need our help finding your place.
I just opened my invitation to
the “Celebrate Saint Saviour’s
forward to attending and I hope
you will be there, too. It’s going to
Vestry Nominations Deadline: Dec. 1
one of the most important events in the life of an Episcopal parish is the election of
the Vestry, the primary decision-making body of the parish that provides leadership
for parish life. Each year 4 persons are elected for 3-year terms. Nominees and
nominators must be active, adult communicants of Christ Church.
Following are the expectations of Vestry members: pray daily for the parish, fulfill
the canonical duties of the Vestry, attend Sunday services and major parish events
regularly, serve as Vestry Person of the Week, serve as advocate to a parish standing
committee, provide leadership in helping the parish grow into a deeper understanding
of stewardship, make a special effort to welcome and greet visitors, and attend an
overnight, working retreat as a part of the regular Vestry business and life together.
The election process begins with receiving nominations from the congregation by
Dec. 1. After Christmas, a preliminary ballot will be mailed to all communicants to
determine the final 8 nominees as required by diocesan canon law. The final election
will be held at the Annual Parish meeting at 10:00a on Sunday, January 30, 2011.
Former Vestry members are ineligible for 3 years following their completed terms:
(2008) Tricia Arnett, Gordon Grubb, John Hogan, Mark Self
(2009) Blanche Bacon, Jim Cain, Hubert Haywood, Susie Small
(2010) Reid Jones, Catherine Cox, Rachel Smith, Doug Bryant
Please prayerfully consider nominations for Vestry. Nominations must be submitted
in writing to the church office or placed in the Vestry Nominations box in the lobby
by Dec. 1. The nominee must have agreed to the nomination— please acknowledge
your nominee’s consent in the space provided on the nomination form.
Walking with God at Valle Crucis
Can You Say “ADULT CAMP?”
by Yorke Sartorio
In late September a group of 30+ parishioners traveled
to Valle Crucis for the closest thing to adult camp I
can imagine. The Inn at Valle Crucis is a wonderfully
rustic, three-story building with wood paneled floors
and walls. Its very best feature, to me, is a long porch
full of rocking chairs and a view that just eases you
off your feet. We slept with the windows open, fans
humming. Each time the bell rang, we lined up to
heap our plates with delicious home cooked food in
the dining hall. An extra added attraction was that we didn’t have to do the dishes!
Each evening we gathered in the Inn or on the front porch to enjoy the libations and
appetizers everyone brought. Yes, food was a big part of our fellowship. Thanks to
Charles and Sandra Smith for leading an invigorating hike along the Appalachian Trail.
We ended our days with compline and on Sunday we celebrated the Holy Eucharist
together. It was a grand way to meet new friends and get to know others even better.
I look forward to next year’s time in Valle Crucis. If you enjoyed camp as a child,
you should definitely think about joining us next year!
Meg Buerkel Hunn joins our parish Clergy
The Rev. Margaret Buerkel Hunn joined the Christ Church clergy staff as part time Assistant Rector in mid-October.
Announcing her appointment, the Rev. Jim Adams said, “Meg is a gifted priest who will enrich our life together and, joining
Jenny and Miller, will be a great addition to our clergy team.”
Meg received her B.A. from Mary Baldwin College and her M.Div. from The General Theological Seminary, New York. Prior
to going to seminary, she taught high school students with disabilities in Louisburg, NC, with Teach for America. She also
worked as a youth ministry intern at a Jesuit retreat center and as an activities specialist at a psychiatric hospital for children.
Since her ordination, Meg has served churches and campus ministries in Philadelphia and North Carolina. Meg is married to
Michael Buerkel Hunn and is stepmom to Dexter (13) and Murphy (10). Her hobbies include travel, swimming, reading and
being outdoors. Since moving to Raleigh, she has become a beginner pianist and gardener.
Outreach
CCoM’s 3rd Quarter Project
from the ECW Fall Luncheon
At the Sept. 23 ECW Fall luncheon at Sally and John Glover’s home members
enjoyed each other’s company while dining on yummies prepared by
our own Kitchen Guild. Gorgeous floral arrangements by Anna ball Hodge
and Sally Glover were placed throughout the Glovers’ beautifully renovated
home. Special thanks to ramona Holdstock, beth moye and beth Williamson
and their committee for creating such a fun, memorable event.
CCom completed its 3rd quarter project on
Saturday, oct. 9, helping with a Habitat for Humanity
deconstruction project. The project
mainly consisted of removing
the ceiling of a house that was
going to be demolished. The work
included knocking out the ceiling
and removing blown-in insulation,
wiring, ductwork, plumbing lines
and copper wiring. Any materials
that could be salvaged for sale or recycling were saved,
and the remaining material was taken to the dump.
According to Howard brooks, it was an intensely
productive day. “The Habitat people said we did more
in a half day than most do in a full day,” he noted,
adding, “our next project will be 1st quarter of 2011,
and we encourage parish participation.”
Parish Life
spotlight on Delois Ward
by Patrice C. Roesler and Rachel Smith
Delois Ward is a relative newcomer
to Christ Church, having
come into our midst in 2005. but
she is not new to North Carolina,
nor is she new to a life of service. She
provides a deeply felt but quiet ministry,
not only to our congregation
and throughout our diocese but also
to developmentally disabled children
and their parents.
born in bladen County, Delois
spent most of her formative years
in the town of Hallsboro in neighboring
Columbus County. In her
junior year of high school, her family’s
home burned, and she and her
five siblings were going back to
bladen County to live with family
and friends. but her math teacher,
ms. marjorie Spaulding, convinced
Delois’ mother to let her live in ms.
Spaulding’s home until she completed
high school.
ms. Spaulding, who had become
like a second mother to Delois, told
her, “You are going to college. my
sister lives in Washington, DC, and
you can live with her.” In Washington
Delois attended the margaret
murray Washington School of
Nursing, after which she worked
as a public health nurse for 14
years. She married her high school
sweetheart and had two sons. While
working full time and raising her
children, she completed her bS in
Psychology and obtained an mA
in clinical community psychology
at the university of the District of
Columbia. much later, when her
son was at St. Augustine’s College,
he told her, “Sometimes
I wanted to quit, but knowing
you worked full-time, cared for
two teenage boys, and earned two
degrees, I couldn’t drop out.”
Confirmed in 1956 at the Church
Delois Ward
of the Atonement in Washington,
Delois served both her church and
the Diocese of Washington with a
passion. Her work with children’s
ministries led to her friendship with
the rev. randolph Charles, rector
of the Church of the Epiphany.
After her retirement in 2003
she moved to raleigh. Fortuity
brought her through the doors of
Christ Church. At a diocesan event
in raleigh, she thought she saw
randolph across the room. “It was
a case of mistaken identity,” she
laughs. The person she greeted was
Winston Charles, then rector of
Christ Church and brother of randolph.
She told him of her move
and visited Christ Church one subsequent
Sunday. “I felt the indwelling
of Christ in my heart,” she said.
later, at Crowing for Christ Church,
she stopped by the Stephen ministry
table. She joined the ministry team,
and it has been her ministry ever
since. “For 30 years I worked with
families in trouble. Now I am able
to give back,” she says.
As a clinical psychologist, Delois
specialized in counseling and
treatment for families of infants and
young children with mental disabilities.
She has published many articles
and research findings in various
mental health publications.
THE GIVING TREE
An outreach project for the whole family
Our parish will again sponsor families from the Growing Together Preschool (GTP) this December
with Christmas presents. GTP is a preschool program that serves 3 and 4-year-olds living in public
housing. Beginning Sunday, Nov. 28, at the Advent Celebration our Christmas tree ornaments will
list the name, gender, age and gift idea for children or siblings from the GTP class. Each child will
have two (2) tags, one for a toy /fun gift, and the other for a clothing item. Please register your
name and phone number and identify the child you have selected. (This is to ensure that each
child receives a gift). Please wrap your gift(s) and place the child’s angel or ornament tag on top
of each gift. All gifts must be returned to the church by Wednesday, Dec. 8 (Saint Lucia & Saint
