4. The U.S. Congress and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services should increase<br />
access to education for faculty and students through the development and testing of innovative<br />
models which focus on mentorship to promote a sustained pipeline.<br />
• Expand the use of technologies (e.g., simulation, distance learning, virtual worlds) to prepare<br />
faculty to teach effectively and efficiently and to prepare nurses for practice in complex<br />
healthcare delivery systems.<br />
• Promote innovative practice models that provide learning opportunities that emphasize safe,<br />
coordinated, and affordable healthcare (e.g., publish Pathways to <strong>Nursing</strong> Practice – establish<br />
a baseline of programs and geographic distribution of all programs. Identify the nursing<br />
programs that support training or offer education in rural areas with integrated experiences in<br />
ambulatory, community, and inpatient environments).<br />
• Advance inter-professional models of education that provide collaborative and consumercentered<br />
care.<br />
• Provide funding to support well-designed and effective, sustainable strategies to promote and<br />
retain racial and ethnic diversity in nursing education and practice.<br />
