Dear Friends, 

I was surprised – and deeply touched. 

I left Hill-Murray High School in St. Paul, MN, twenty-five years 

ago, but occasionally I am in contact with some graduates. I was 

included in a series of e-mails about a 1983 graduate who had died. 

Then a few days later, I received another e-mail from a young man 

who was a classmate of the deceased but whom I never thought I had 

“connected with” very much. He wrote this to me: “Just wanted to 

take this chance to thank you for being the understanding, caring 

role model you were for me and all of us. I hope you know how 

important it was to have someone like you in our lives at an age when 

things can get pretty confusing. I hope you are doing well.” 

Doing well, heck! I was flying high. So often people really never 

know what kind of impact we have on one another, especially 

students who are struggling through adolescence. But, when over 25 

years later, a message like this one reaches us, we are “blown away” 

and hope that others had a similar experience. 

This issue of Partners in Mission includes inspiring stories 

about people of all ages who have made or are making a difference. 

“Healing Haiti” documents the activities of our students at every 

level, elementary, high school, and university, to reach out and 

make a difference in the lives of the struggling earthquake victims. 

Fe y Vida posts an impressive list of accomplishments over the last 

15 years since it was established in 1994. Saint Mary’s Press, the 

Midwest District, the Lasallian Education Fund, and all the Brothers 

who have served on boards have helped Fe y Vida become one of 

the largest national organizations of Hispanic ministry in the United 

States. 

This issue focuses on two Lasallian educators who are 

“understanding, caring role models” for young people. Their very 

presence encourages their students to perform service for those who 

have less than they and their families have, to engage in the mission 

handed to us by St. John Baptist de La Salle. 

For the last ten years the Spring/Summer issue of Partners has 

always included the Honor Roll of Donors, which lists friends and 

“Partners” in our Lasallian mission. In this lifetime you will never 

know the difference that you make in so many lives, but your efforts 

in good times and hard times continue to support our Ministries and 

the Mission of John Baptist de La Salle.

Update: The Lasallian Teacher 

Immersion Program 

Brother Patrick Conway, FSC, Director of Vocations, Formation and LTIP 

Eleven young men have applied for the fourth cohort of the Lasallian Teacher Immersion Program (LTIP). 

These young men are currently enrolled at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN, Lewis University 

in Romeoville, IL, and Saint Mary’s University in Winona, MN. 

Although the fourth cohort of LTIP will not begin the semester immersion until August 28, four of 

the applicants were able to participate in a week-long orientation retreat and service project over 

the Christmas break at La Salle Institute (Glencoe) and North St. Louis. This experience provided the 

applicants an opportunity to grow in their understanding of what the semester immersion experience will 

look like, attend informational sessions on De La Salle and our Lasallian Mission given by Brother Larry 

Schatz, Auxiliary Provincial, and share time with the young men from the previous cohorts. 

On the third day, the applicants and LTIP “alums” moved to Saints Teresa and Bridget Parish in North St. 

Louis where their time was spent volunteering with The Solomon Project plastering, painting and cleaning 

a home for a single mother. In total, the young men worked in three different homes that are specifically 

rehabbed for lower-economic, first-time home owners. Here is a description of The Solomon Project 

from their website: 

In the time of King David, the Lord spoke to him saying that his son Solomon would build a house in 

honor of the Lord. Solomon fulfilled the Lord’s command by building a Temple and a reign of peace 

followed. Today, the Solomon Project seeks to build houses in honor of our Lord, recognizing that we 

are temples of the Holy Spirit. The Solomon Project was created by NGNS (North Grand Neighborhood 

Services) and seeks to build affordable housing in the North St. Louis community. The affordable 

housing is made possible through volunteer laborers, financial contributions and donated building 

materials. Volunteer groups commit their time and energy on a regular basis under the direction of a 

qualified general contractor. 

After four days of volunteering with The 

Solomon Project, they returned to La Salle 

Retreat Center to process their time together 

and relax before the drive back to their 

respective universities.

Second Group of LTIP Students Travel to Guatemala on May 16, 2010 

Participants from the First and Third Cohort of LTIP will travel to Antigua, Guatemala, and 

begin a week of intensive Spanish language lessons (one-on-one) for six hours a day. While 

studying the language their first week, the students will live with host families in Antigua. 

This will provide them a wonderful opportunity to put into practice what they have learned 

with their language instructors during the school day. An additional two weeks will be spent 

on a guided educational tour by Brother James Krause from Kansas City, MO, who lived 

and served in Guatemala for many years. During the guided tour Brother James, as well 

as Brothers Larry Schatz and Pat Conway, will teach a theology course entitled “Hispanic 

Catholics: Issues and Concerns.” In addition, the students will have the opportunity to visit 

several Lasallian ministries in Guatemala City, Chiquimula, Huehuetenango (where Brother 

James Miller was martyred), and San Lucas Toliman. 

The purpose of the immersion experience is threefold: 

1) to familiarize LTIP students with our global Lasallian 

network; 2) to develop an appreciation for the people 

and culture of a developing country; and 3) 

to meet the needs of Spanish-speaking 

students and families in the United 

States.

“I am putting a man on the moon!” That, as the story goes, is the response John F. Kennedy got when he put the question “What 

are you doing here?” to a custodian, broom in hand, while visiting the Cape Canaveral space center shortly after the President had 

challenged NASA with that now-famous goal. 

Brother Thomas Johnson, Vicar General, recalled that story in a keynote address he gave on the Lasallian Mission last year to 

the chief administrators of our schools. He said “[That custodian] understood the ideas, maybe not the words, of ministry and 

mission. The work he was doing was part of a mission even though his work was so significantly different, but not insignificant, 

from some other folks at Cape Canaveral.” 

Brother Thomas was emphasizing how all can contribute to the central Lasallian Mission of the Christian Brothers. That Mission 

has remained unchanged for over 

300 years, even as the many schools 

and other ministries serving that 

mission change considerably over 

time -- opening, closing, adapting 

and relocating in response to 

shifting needs, conditions, and 

priorities. As he stressed “It 

is important to remember that 

it is the Mission, the Lasallian 

Mission to provide a human and 

Christian education to the young 

and especially the poor, that needs 

to be nurtured and to endure in a 

multitude of ways and that those 

ways may change and evolve.” 

As a Partner you are a vital part of 

our Mission as well. Clearly we 

would never be able to respond to 

the needs of those whom we serve 

were it not for friends like you who 

believe in the Mission, friends who 

generously share their resources 

with us. Tens of thousands of young 

people have graduated from our 

DeLaSalle, Minneapolis, MN, collected over 3,000 used books through a student organized 

book drive. They were sorted by student volunteers in the Lasallian Ministry office and shipped to 

Better World Books, Inc., an agency that sells the books and donates the profits to literacy promotion 

organizations. Any books that were not eligible were sold here at the school at a “sidewalk sale” and 

these proceeds were sent to our “Twin School” in Kenya. 

schools where we were able to help shape their futures. As a partner YOU are an integral part of our mission. YOU, and others like 

you, have helped shape those lives and those futures. Here are some stories about those changed lives. 

You, along with all our Partners, may not often see our students. You may not often 

step into our schools or other ministries. But please know that you are our Partner 

in the Lasallian Mission just as those who serve in other and more direct ways.

I am thinking of a recent graduate of one of our high schools. I 

was with him and several of his fellow students a few years ago 

serving others at a soup kitchen on a bitterly cold day. Several 

of the guests were indeed homeless. They would be spending the 

rest of the night outdoors. At the end of the evening, as we were 

headed home, I noticed that this student was not wearing any 

gloves. Odd. That day everyone was wearing gloves. So I asked 

him about it. He told me that, indeed, he did have gloves when 

we arrived at the soup kitchen but that he became aware of one 

of the homeless guests who had none. He figured that because he 

had another pair at home it made more sense to give our homeless 

guest some gloves to help him cope with another night in the cold. 

Imagine how comforted and grateful that person felt. Imagine 

yourself as part of that generous offer. Your support of the 

Lasallian mission makes you an essential part of efforts like these. 

Time and again our students enthusiastically give service to others 

through opportunities coordinated by staff at their school. 

I am thinking of a doctor who graduated from one of our high 

schools several years ago. He went on to medical school and has 

spent his career in service to others, but he freely admits that it 

might not have turned out that way. When he talks of his high 

school days he points out that “if it were not for the Brothers I 

would have ended up in jail!” High praise and affirmation, indeed, 

but the Brothers could not have been there for him were you and 

all our benefactors not there for the Brothers. Imagine how many 

lives that doctor has saved, how much pain he has suppressed, how 

much vitality he has restored. Imagine yourself as a part of each 

story. Your support of the Lasallian mission helped make sure that 

this young man became an intern and not an inmate. 

Each day, during Catholic Schools Week, at De La Salle Institute, Chicago, IL, a different grade went out to a local grammar school or social 

service agency. The students provided a variety of services including assisting teachers, reading to students, tutoring and assisting with PE.

I am thinking of a current student who was asked to share his story as part of a prayer 

before a board meeting. He had signed up for an out-of-town service trip, one that 

would last several days, without realizing that he was the only one in his own circle 

of friends who would be going. When he boarded the van at the start of the trip he 

rather expected to be an outsider and he resolved just to make the best of it, get home 

as soon as possible, and put it all behind him. For a while he found his expectations 

were met. There was verbal sparring and discomfort; there were awkward moments. 

But as the days went on and the students worked side by side they found the common 

ground that previously had eluded them. Their shared experiences allowed them to 

build relationships enriched by their diversity. Upon returning to school those who 

ventured out to give themselves to others found that they had received something 

valuable in return. Imagine their quizzical delight in forging new relationships that 

bridged old gaps. Imagine yourself as part of this healing process. Your support helps 

make it possible for all our students to have experiences that help them appreciate the 

full spectrum of gifts present in the diversity of others. 

Who can count the number of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made by De La Salle Institute, Chicago, IL, students each month 

for the Port Ministry Bread Truck distribution? The Bread Truck tours the south side of Chicago each week and passes out sandwiches to 

people on the streets.

H e a l i n g H a i t i 

Brother Joseph Martin, FSC, Assistant to the President, Lewis University 

Following the January earthquake that devastated Haiti and killed hundreds of thousands of people, the 

response from the ministries of the Midwest District was immediate and enthusiastic. The activities 

and projects implemented by students, faculty and staff members around the District are a testament 

to the vitality of the Lasallian Mission. In addition, the creativity of many people is impressive, and the 

amount of money collected will be a significant contribution to help the Haitian people in need. 

Totino-Grace High School (Fridley, MN) responded through its support of 

Healing Haiti, a grassroots organization based in White Bear Lake, MN, 

dedicated to building schools and orphanages and the distribution of water 

in Port-au-Prince. Through tee shirt sales and the involvement of the sports 

teams the school raised close to $14,000 in one week for the organization. 

The Student Service Club at De La Salle at St. Matthew (St. Louis, MO) started 

an initiative to raise funds by establishing a “Dress Like a Teacher Day.” 

In addition, five learning groups competed to see who could raise the most 

money, and the Malcolm X Learning Group won by collecting over $115. The 

funds were donated to Moun Pou Moun, an aid group in Haiti led by former 

DLS Spanish teacher Christen Parker. 

Christian Brothers Services (Romeoville, IL) opened their hearts and wallets 

to help the people of Haiti. On one January day the employees paid a $5.00 

fee to wear jeans to work, and some sold baked goods. In less than an hour, 

the bake sale was sold out. CBS employees rallied to raise more than $6,000 

in one day. The money went to the Brothers of the Christian Schools Haiti 

Emergency Relief Fund. 

De La Salle at St. Matthew Middle School, Saint Louis, MO, collected change to raise 

money for Haiti.

music for Haiti relief.

At San Miguel (Tulsa, OK) the students started a project called “Pennies for 

Haiti.” One student brought to school a large jug of coins his family had saved 

for many months. All the school got involved pitching in coins, and little by 

little the amount grew to $580. The project proved the point of the theme 

of the activity – that practicing little loving actions each day can make a 

difference in the lives of other people.

(Lombard, IL) watched a 

video about Haiti prepared 

by one student. As a result, 

the school organized a “Half 

for Haiti” campaign where 

students donated half of their 

regular lunch money to the 

people of Haiti. Donations 

were also collected during 

Homeroom, and the student 

body raised over $4,000. 

At De La Salle High School 

(Minneapolis, MN) three 

students and one faculty 

member volunteered to have 

their heads shaved if the school collected at least $2,000. The student body 

raised more than that, so at a pep fest in the gymnasium the whole school 

watched as they had their heads shaved. Half of the money was donated to the 

Red Cross because a local bank matched $1,000 donations. The remaining 

donations were sent to another agency to help the people of Haiti.

Other creative efforts around the Midwest District included a shoe drive at 

St. Patrick High School (Chicago, IL), a “Beans and Jeans” day at Bishop 

Kelly High School (Tulsa, OK), a pizza party at Christian Brothers University 

(Memphis, TN), a “Dance for Haiti” at Saint Mary’s University (Winona, MN), and a “Hope for Haiti” 

collection at Lewis University (Romeoville, IL). Space does not allow for detailed coverage of all the efforts 

from around the District. 

As reports and photographs from around the District arrived at the Provincial Office in Burr Ridge, one thing 

seemed certain. The Lasallian values of faith, service and community have been appropriated by students, 

faculty members and staff members of the many ministries sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers. 

The people of Haiti may never know about the Midwest District, but they will experience the effects of these 

efforts by dedicated Lasallians to heal Haiti by touching the hearts of its people.

Focusing on ourLasallianPartners 

Didier Aur 

President and Lasallian Animator 

Helias Catholic High School, Jefferson City, MO 

Jefferson City is the capital of Missouri, but it is also the home of Helias 

Catholic High School, part of the Midwest District network of ministries. 

Didier Aur is in his fourth year as president of Helias, a school that is cosponsored 

by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. 

Didier’s Lasallian journey began when he entered Christian Brothers 

High School in Memphis in 1975. He later returned to CBHS where 

he served for ten years as teacher, coach, assistant athletic director, 

and director of admissions. It was during this time that Brother Chris 

Englert invited him to take part in the Lasallian Leadership Institute, 

an experience that transformed his life. After the first year, Didier and 

CBHS colleague Jamie Brummer toured the San Miguel Back of the Yards 

School in Chicago with their LLI colleague, Carrie Kiskilla. They were 

so taken with the school and what they had learned about the Lasallian 

charism and serving the poor that in 2002, they took on the challenge of 

opening a Jubilee School in Memphis called Holy Names.

partner again this year to do catechetical work in 

small villages. 

Didier’s wife, Kelley, is very supportive of Catholic education and is also a huge fan of the Brothers. Their children, 

Jonathan, 18, and Celina, 16, are both students at Helias. “I always knew that one day I’d be my son’s teacher or 

principal somewhere along the line, but I never dreamed that my daughter would also have a Lasallian high school 

education, but because I am here at Helias, a co-ed school, that is possible. I see both of my children every day.” 

And both of them have “caught” the Lasallian charism as well. One of Didier’s proudest accomplishments at Helias 

has been the many mission service trips he has led to Memphis, St, Louis, and Springfield. His two children have 

missed only one of those trips and that’s because they both had the flu! This year for the third time, Helias will join 

forces with students from O’Hara High School in Kansas City, MO, to spend Holy Week in Mexico on a mission 

trip where they will partner with students from a Lasallian school in Hermosillo, Mexico, called La Salle 

Regis, to do catechetical work in small villages. Brother Chuck Gregor at O’Hara has coordinated and 

led this trip for several years. 

While finances remain a significant challenge at Helias, the school 

has a healthy enrollment of 820 students, and Didier hopes to 

accompany some of his teachers to the LSJI this summer in El 

Paso. He knows first-hand the value of Lasallian formation and 

the effect it can have on staff. 

Didier articulates his hopes and dreams for Helias this 

way: “I want to make sure that after the Christian Brothers, 

School Sisters of Notre Dame and I are gone, that the school 

is firmly permeated with the joint charism of these two 

complementary charisms.” 

In four short years at Helias, Didier has accomplished 

much and credits so many Brothers and Lasallian 

colleagues as his inspiration and support through the years. 

In speaking of his own children, Didier says, “I couldn’t be 

prouder of how involved and mission-oriented they are.” 

It’s no wonder. They have a great role model!

These are all significant stops on the 

17-year Lasallian journey of Emily Vogel. 

Currently serving as Campus Minister and 

Lasallian Animator at De La Salle Institute 

in Chicago, Emily credits her Lasallian 

experiences as some of the most significant 

of her life. 

The first step of her Lasallian journey 

began at O’Hara High School in Kansas City, 

Missouri, where she joined Lasallian Youth, 

and had her first taste of the Lasallian family. She went on to college 

at Truman State, a public school, but by junior year, she had begun 

a chapter of Lasallian Collegians there, mainly because she so 

missed the Lasallian connections she had had through high school 

and that some of her friends were experiencing at Lasallian colleges. 

Upon graduation Emily joined the Lasallian Volunteers and spent 

her first year at the LEO (Lasallian Educational Opportunities) 

Center in Oakland, California. “This experience laid the foundation

for who I’d become as an adult,” says Emily about her first year as an LV. “Living in a Lasallian community in the 

Bay Area gave me first-hand experience of people who really live as people of justice, that this is a way of life.” 

She relocated to the East Coast for her second year as an LV and worked at Cardinal Gibbons High School in 

Baltimore, where she stayed on for two extra years after completing her year as an LV. 

Emily then moved to Chicago where she spent four years at San Miguel School while getting her master’s degree 

in Pastoral Studies from Loyola. She has been at De La Salle since 2007, coordinating Lasallian Youth and teaching 

religion, along with her other campus ministry duties. 

Emily is clear about what keeps her in the Lasallian mission: “It’s 

family. It goes even deeper than the mission for me. The Lasallian 

language is shared by this family that I am part of. I don’t know how 

to be an adult without being Lasallian.” 

Emily recently joined the board of the Brother David Darst Center 

in Chicago, a Lasallian ministry that provides social justice and 

immersion experiences for young people and adults. Emily has also 

participated in the Lasallian Leadership Institute as well as Young 

Lasallians, an experience that took her to Rome. In 2002 she went 

to Sri Lanka on an adult immersion trip sponsored by the San 

Francisco District, her first time out of the country. 

Emily admits that the biggest challenge for her has been “the 

tension at times between what God is calling me to and living a more 

traditional and convenient life near family. But I just can’t walk away 

from the call.” 

Emily concludes by smiling as she says: “I am so grateful 

and indebted to the Brothers. So many of my major travels and 

experiences are because I am Lasallian.” Emily, the gratitude is 

mutual!

Celebrates 

15 Years!

So, why is an organization with a Spanish 

name based in Stockton, California, included 

in the list of Midwest District ministries? 

Good question! Instituto Fe Y Vida (Institute 

for Faith and Life) has just celebrated its 

15th anniversary and has become in that 

short amount time, one of the three leaders of Hispanic Catholic 

ministry in the United States. At the center of this startling 

success story is Dr. Carmen Maria Cervantes, who continues to 

work out of the Fe y Vida “corporate headquarters” located in her 

home in Stockton. Carmen has been with the project since 1988, 

and she brings with her a vast amount of experience in Hispanic 

ministry both in Mexico and in the United States and has 

served as president of the National 

Conference of Hispanic Diocesan 

Directors of Catechetical Ministry. 

At the center of this startling 

success story is Dr. Carmen Maria 

Cervantes, who continues to work 

out of the Fe y Vida “corporate 

headquarters” located in her 

home in Stockton, CA. 

The story really begins back in the 

mid-1980’s at Saint Mary’s Press 

in Winona, Minnesota. Brother 

Damian Steger, FSC, President, 

and his brother Jack Steger, SMP 

Board Member, decided that it was 

time for the Press to reach out to 

the pressing needs of Latinos in the 

United States. It was clear from the 

very start of this ambitious project 

that this would not be a profitmaking 

initiative for the Press. 

However, it clearly fit the Lasallian 

tradition of ministering to the 

underserved and marginalized. 

Early in the development of the project, it became evident that 

training programs for people ministering to Hispanic youth and 

young adult ministry were also needed. These programs were 

beyond the scope and expertise of Saint Mary’s Press. In 1993 

Br. Damian saw the need to separate the “formation outreach” 

of the Hispanic project from the “publishing outreach.” It 

was decided to establish a formation institute as a separate 

nonprofit corporation to have greater credibility as an institute, 

to have its own identity with its own board, staff, and faculty, 

and to be a fundable entity.

In March 1994 Instituto Fe y Vida was incorporated as a 

California nonprofit corporation. Br. Mark Murphy, then 

Provincial of the San Francisco Province of the Christian 

Brothers, and Br. David Brennan, Finance Director, sponsored 

and assisted with the incorporation. The Lasallian Education 

Fund of the Midwest District subsidized the operating expenses of 

Fe y Vida, which it continues to do today. 

Carmen is very clear about the role played by the Press and the

largest national organizations of Hispanic Ministry in the United 

States.” 

One of Fe y Vida’s most significant accomplishments has been 

the publishing of “La Biblia Católica para Jóvenes” (The Catholic 

Bible for Youth). This publication is not simply a translation of 

the Catholic Youth Bible published by the Press in 1999, but 

rather is written and designed specifically for Latino youth. And 

it is important to remember that this is a vast and diverse group 

ranging from Puerto Ricans and Dominicans in New York, Cubans 

in Florida, and Mexicans in California, not to mention Hispanic 

Americans who have been here for several generations. 

To date, over 275,000 copies of “La Biblia Católica para Jóvenes” 

are in the hands of young people in the United States, Latin 

America, and Spain, along with 30,000 copies of the lectionarybased 

books “Diálogos Semanales con Jesús” (Weekly Dialogs 

with Jesus). A few more accomplishments of Fe y Vida in the last 

15 years include: 

• More than 5,000 graduates from leadership formation 

programs. 

• Close to 450 leaders educated as trainers in pastoral 

ministry. 

• Over 20,000 participants in workshops and conferences. 

• Close to 4,000 participants in professional consultations. 

• More than 20 courses taught at the university level. 

• Gathering and dissemination of valuable research on 

young Catholic Latinos.

The biggest project on the horizon is the first bilingual Biblical 

Mission among youth and young adults in the Americas. The 

Biblical Mission will be launched this year in collaboration 

with five national and international institutions and the 

support of the Bishops’ Conferences of the United States and 

Latin America. The goal is to empower thousands of young 

Catholics in all the Americas to bring the Word of God to 

their peers. 

“My biggest joy is seeing the projects that we planned really 

help the young people we are serving, even though it takes a 

lot of time and effort,” says Carmen as she looks at the past 15 

years. “It’s all worth it if what we do is well received.” 

The enduring and vibrant international legacy of St. John 

Baptist de La Salle clearly lives on in Fe y Vida. As Carmen 

describes it so well: “The two most evident ways that we 

are a Lasallian ministry is that we do two important things 

that John Baptist de La Salle did. We teach teachers; it may 

take five or six years to move young adults from where they 

are to where we want them to be, but that is not too much 

longer than a university education. Second, De La Salle put 

education in the language of the young people and by doing 

so, he ran into lots of obstacles, but he was stubborn and 

persisted. We are following in his steps.”

Chicagoland Lasallian Youth had a 30/24 hour food fast 

the first weekend in March. There were 72 students from 

the 4 high schools. They stayed overnight Friday at Saint 

Patrick High School, Chicago, IL, and broke the fast 

together with the Eucharist and breakfast on Saturday 

morning. The money that was donated was directed to

Institute, Chicago, IL, 

helped the members of the 

Chicago Fire Fighters Union Local 

No. 2 put together bikes for 

needy children. The bikes were 

donated to Catholic Charities of 

Chicago for distribution. In all, 

over 50 De La Salle students 

participated at the Chicago Fire 

Fighters Union Local No. 2 office 

in Canaryville. 


The Christian Brothers Adopt-A-Student 

Program began in 1987 to assist needy 

students with financial aid to realize an 

education at a Lasallian School. Money 

is raised by contacting foundations, 

corporations and individuals for direct grants 

to the program. The grant money is sent to 

the school, and the school matches a needy 

student with the scholarship grant. All 

scholarship grants go directly to the student’s 

tuition. 

This Program is a cooperative venture 

between needy parents who pay as much of 

the tuition as they are able; the school which 

contributes a partial scholarship and the 

sponsor – corporations, banks, foundations, 

or individuals, who make charitable donations 

to complete the arrangements.

the Provincial Office, Burr Ridge, Illinois.

n On November 6, 2009 the Christian 

Brothers Benefit Raffle was held at the 

Provincial Office with Brother Thomas 

Dominic Vance coordinating the event. 

This raffle has been held annually since 

1995 when the Midwest District came 

into existence. This year a gross total 

of over $400,000 was raised to support 

participating ministries. Sixteen winners 

were awarded a total of $19,250. The 

winners and their prizes include the

n The Regional Conference of Christian 

Brothers (RCCB) meeting was conducted 

from November 16 through 21, 2009 in 

Cincinnati, OH. It was a combined meeting 

with Brother Superior and the General 

Council. This was the first meeting of 

the expanded RCCB which included the 

Provincials and the Auxiliary Provincials. – 

Superior General, General Councilors, Provincials and Auxiliary 

Provincials following a day long working session. 

n The Huether Lasallian 

Conference was held November 19 

to 21. The theme was “Providing 

Sanctuary for All in Times of 

Crisis.” In addition to the regular 

keynote speakers and the breakout 

sessions, this year’s Huether 

featured presentations by the 

Superior General, Brother Álvaro 

Rodríguez Echeverría, and the Vicar 

General, Brother Thomas Johnson.

n Ms. Mari Anzicek, Lasallian Volunteer 2007-2009, was 

hired as the new Director of Development for the Lasallian 

Volunteers effective January 2010. “I was looking forward 

to joining the Lasallian Volunteers in a full time capacity,” 

said Mari. “My time as a volunteer was personally 

enriching and challenging. To continue being a part of 

such an experience for young people is exciting and very 

rewarding.” 

Mari chaired the planning committee for Second Annual LV fundraiser and 

participated in the ‘Philly Races.’ Her efforts helped to raise $67,000.


n Students and faculty from several Midwest District high schools 

traveled by bus on a four-day Pilgrimage to “March for Life” on 

January 22 in Washington, DC. This is the anniversary of Roe 

vs. Wade (the decision that legalized abortion on demand.) At 

the rally, they joined with 250,000+ other pro-life marchers and 

peacefully advanced down Constitution Avenue to the Supreme 

Court Building. Montini theology teacher, Dr. Joseph Mordente 

observed, “Peaceful, prayerful yet full of exuberance, they marched. 

And what a sign of hope for the future it was!” 

n “Catholic Schools: Dividends for Life” was the theme selected for 

Catholic Schools Week, January 31 through February 6, the annual 

Adrian 1st place winner (far right) and Joshua 3rd

celebration that focuses attention on the good work done by the nation’s Catholic schools. Catholic 

Schools Week is a joint project of the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) and the 

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Winning Student Essays from Benilde-St. 

Margaret’s School, Saint Louis Park, MN, reflected on how BSM is recognized by the students, staff, 

faculty and the community as ‘Holy Ground.’ 

n February 1 marked the beginning of Black 

History Month. De La Salle at St. Mathew 

Middle School, St. Louis, MO, not only honored 

and celebrated the achievements of African 

Americans who have contributed to our nation’s 

advancement, but also sought to foster within the 

students a sense of self-confidence and dignity as 

daily each young man and woman affirmed that 

“I Am Somebody.” The winning essay submitted 

by eight grader Adrian was written in the form 

of a letter from Martin Luther King to President 

Barack Obama. Adrian wrote that “the ultimate 

measure of a man is not where he stands in 

moments of comfort, but where he stands at times 

of challenge and controversy.”

n Brother William Mann, President, Saint Mary’s 

University, honored faculty, staff, students and Lasallian 

educators at the annual Founder’s Day ceremony on 

March 2 during De La Salle Week. Dr. Carmelita 

Quebengco of the Philippines, Brother Stephen Rusyn, 

FSC, Mrs. Mary Becker, and outstanding senior students 

were honored for their contributions and commitment to 

the Lasallian Mission of education. 

University President, Brother William Mann and Bishop John M. Quinn present the Bishop Patrick Heffron Award for Service 

to Mrs. Mary Becker. Mrs. Becker has served in the Office of the President since 1993. As the administrative assistant to the 

president, she provides a daily example of service and commitment to the mission of Saint Mary’s University, Winona, MN. 

n During the month of March Lasallian Volunteers who are 

currently serving in ministries gathered for the second annual LV 

Discernment Retreat. This retreat has proved to be a valuable 

resource to assist the men and women determine their course of 

action. Retreat Director, Brother Larry Schatz reflected that “it is 

always a great experience to be around the Lasallian Volunteers. 

Their energy and their sense of commitment are an inspiration. 

I feel blessed to be one of the people accompanying them on this 

retreat.” LV Jackie Young reflected,“this discernment offered me 

peace of mind and confidence that the Holy Spirit will guide me to 

where I am meant to be.”

n The Midwest District Retreat began on Holy Thursday, April 1, and concluded on 

Holy Saturday, following the Vigil Service. The speaker/presider for the program was 

Father Michael Joyce, CM, Chaplain for Lambert Hall, CBU, Memphis. For the second 

year, Auxiliary Provincial Brother Larry Schatz invited Lasallians, students, teachers, 

administrators and directors, from across the Midwest District to write a Lenten 

scripture reflection. Brother Larry compiled them into a Lenten Reflection Booklet. 

This relevant and inspiring booklet continues to be available on the website for your use. 

The cover drawing was submitted by Rafael De La Isla, a senior student at De La Salle Instiute, Chicago, IL. 

n Brother Milton Barker was unanimously selected by the 

National Catholic Education Association Board of Directors to 

be the recipient of the John F. Meyers Award at the 2010 NCEA 

Convention on April 5. This award is presented to “someone 

who has supported Catholic education” in the areas of teaching, 

administration, parish religious education, research, publication 

or educational leadership. Such service or contribution should 

be recognized as having current significance at the national level 

or through such contributions as development, public relations, 

scholarship programs, financial management, or government 

relations. Six awards are given annually.
