The Human Concerns Committee is sponsoring an “Offering of Letters” on behalf
of Bread for the World next weekend. Please join us in writing to members of
Congress asking them to support reforms in the ways our
government delivers and administers U.S. foreign aid. If possible, please write
letters this week to Paul Ryan, Herb Kohl and Ron Johnson and return your letters
after mass next weekend.
The Two-Minute Letter
An effective letter to Congress needs four things.
Print your name and address at the end of your letter and on the envelope so your members of
Congress know that you are one of the people they represent.
Ask for specific action using the sentence provided or your own words: “I ask you to reform foreign aid
to make it more effective in reducing poverty”.
Give reasons why. Share your personal story about what motivates you to write. Letters with personal
stories are the most compelling and effective.
Send your letter to Congress or put each letter in a separate envelope and return them to the narthex
next week. Mailing labels will be available. For up-to-date information, please visit www.bread.org.
Protecting All God’s Family
Over 60 children with parents attended the Protecting All God‟s
Family Session, Yell and Tell. This was a night for grades K4-2 with
their parents to educate them about safety and how to respond.
Grades 3-5 will have their night for Protecting All God‟s Family on
March 28.
Disciples on a Journey
Our adult Lenten bible study begins Wednesday, March 23 at 6:30pm
in the narthex followed by Stations of the Cross at 7:30pm. The readings during Lent give us inspiration and
direction. We will be renewing our lives with a series called “Disciples on a Journey.” If you are interested in

Operation Rice Bowl
This Lent we are once again participating in Operation Rice Bowl. Boxes and calendars
are available at the welcome desk if you did not get one on Ash Wednesday. This
program is for Catholic Relief Services, the
international humanitarian agency of Catholic
Community of the United States.

“POP ”
On Tuesday, March 1, 2011,
four nursing students and their
instructor from MATC visited the
1 st and 2 nd graders. The nursing
students presented about the five
senses and how to use your senses
to keep a person safe. They began
with an interactive activity popping
Spotlight on School
popcorn. The kids got really excited
as they heard it, smelled it, and saw it.
Later, they were able to taste and
touch it when their presentation was
complete. After popping the corn, the
nurses presented information and the
children were excited to share what
they knew. They then used the
SMARTBoard to watch a video which
required student input to make safe
choices as a girl walked to the park.
Finally, students visited five stations
which allowed them to further
explore their senses.

...Valuing Our Tradition
Here we are, the first week of Lent. What will it
mean for us this year? Are we just going to watch
the weeks roll by or are we going to make this
time more meaningful by getting back to basics:
repent, reform, and renew? There are three
disciplines of Lent that should be on our minds:
prayer; fasting; and almsgiving. The Scriptures
will suggest how to let these three find expression
in our lives and we can follow up on them by
asking ourselves “What can I do for these 40
days that would help me to live the kind of life
Jesus speaks about in the Gospel?
Remember how often He says: “Love your
enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Offer
the other cheek. Lend what you have and expect
nothing back. Stop judging. Stop condemning.
Forgive. Give.” That doesn‟t sound all that hard
to do – when we think of it in the larger view. But
what about when we bring it closer to home? So
many people are walking around with a heavy
weight of anger and unforgiveness towards a
relative or friend for an infraction of friendship
years ago. To keep that hurt in their mind, they
add wood to the fire. Families have been torn
apart by comments and hurts that should have
been forgiven long ago. This Lent, let‟s recognize
what we are saying when we pray the Our
Father: “Forgive US as WE FORGIVE those ….”
We can enter the rhythm of Lent by taking a more
active role in the prayer opportunities offered to
us. We will have a Parish Mission at 7pm on
March 14, 15, and 16. Stations of the Cross will
be 7:30pm on March 23, 30 and April 6. Mass is
offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the
chapel and in church on Tuesdays and Thursdays
at 8am. You are most welcome to join us as often
as you wish. And most certainly, plan to
participate in all of the services during Holy
Week. We need to know that what matters is we
are a part of God‟s rhythm and each week of
Lent brings us together as the body of Christ in this
world.
Our lives are filled with small stuff and we live in
a world where religion has conformed to a culture
without discipline. In an age of instant
“everything,” it‟s only human to long for a life
without depriving ourselves of anything. But that
is not the role we are asked to live by Christ. He
himself chose his time in the desert and He expects
us to follow His example.

From the Pastor . . .
January marked the third year since I arrived at St. Martin on Tours. I
have enjoyed my time here despite the headaches and occasional
problems. One thing I don‟t appreciate is “anonymous notes and letters.”
I have received them every year I‟ve been here and at different times of
the year. I‟ve come to understand that these letters are ways for people
to vent their anger but it‟s a venting in open space. I can‟t do much or
say much with notes and letters that are not signed. I don‟t think I‟m
unapproachable and I do think a better solution would be to talk face to
face in an attempt to solve or rectify the perceived problem and/or
concern.
I‟ve received notes and letters about anger over a speaker for a
Mission; anger at the Church, anger over a specific collection and/or
campaign, anger over perceived action of a fellow parishioner, anger
over something I preached about. Such notes usually end with an
individual or family saying they‟ll no longer contribute to the church and
in some cases they say they‟ll leave the church.
Today we celebrate the Feast day of Saints Perpetua and Felicity
from around the year 200. Perpetua at the age of 22 accepted the
Faith and was baptized along with her servant Felicity. Perpetua‟s father
did everything he could to discourage such an action because he feared
the persecution of the day against Christians fearing his daughter would
be persecuted. Perpetua and Felicity were arrested and imprisoned in a
private home at first before being moved to a prison. After examination,
both were condemned to death at the public games in the amphitheater
for failing to renounce their faith. They were exposed to rabid heifers,
and when Perpetua and Felicity were unharmed, they were sworded to
death. It took a lot of courage, a lot of faith, and a lot of will power for
Perpetua and Felicity to hold on to their faith while practicing it.
I pray to Saint Perpetua and Felicity to be an example for the
anonymous writers. It‟s time to take courage and come forward as
mature adults and engage in a healthy conversation over concerns.
Anger only breeds anger. Anger is that kind of garbage we carry
around only to end up letting it bring us down and keeping us from real
growth. I know I‟m not perfect, the church isn‟t perfect, and in fact none
of us are perfect. However the grace of God helps us through in every
situation.
In every situation, our perspective is only our perspective and
sometimes we miss the whole point or the total picture. I pray that the
anonymous letters and notes stop to be replaced by opportunities for
true dialogue and communication.
Our parish mission will take place this coming week, Monday,
Tuesday, and Wednesday at 7:00pm. It will last one hour each evening
followed by snacks. Please consider attending as an opportunity for
growth during this season of Lent.

"Các con là Muối Đất, là Ánh Sáng Thế Gian!" Mt 5:13-14.
Kính thưa CĐ Dân Chúa!
Mỗi năm, vào Mùa Chay, Giáo Hội lại mời gọi chúng ta nhìn lại
bản thân của chúng ta dưới ánh sáng Tin Mừng của Chúa. Tôi xin chia xẻ
với quý ông bà và anh chị em một vài suy tư về Muối và Ánh Sáng trong
Tin Mừng Chúa Giêsu: "Các con là Muối Đất, là Ánh Sáng Thế Gian!"
Muối và ánh sáng vào thời của Chúa Giêsu rất là quý và hiếm hoi.
Nhưng hôm nay, trong thời đại của chúng ta, muối và ánh sáng không còn đắt và khan hiếm như xưa.
Chúng ta chỉ cần với tay vào công tắc, thì đèn sẽ bật sáng lên. Đặc biệt muối ăn, nó rẻ và quá nhiều đến
nỗi nó được dùng làm muối rải đường vào mùa đông!
Ánh sáng không tiện nghi, dễ làm ra, và tìm thấy cho những người ở thời Chúa Giêsu. Ai đã từng
bị giam hãm trong ngục tù tối tăm thì cảm nghiệm được điều này. Muối rất hiếm và mắc. Người thời đó
gọi muối là "vàng trắng"; muối được chở từ miền xa xôi về. Muối cũng được xử dụng để làm tiền trả
lương cho công nhân. Muối không những làm cho món ăn, thức uống trở nên ngon miệng; nhưng muối
rất cần thiết cho một số bộ phận trong cơ thể con người. Thiếu muối, những bộ phận này sẽ bị tê liệt, cơ
thể trở nên bệnh hoạn, và chết dần mòn.
"Các con là Muối Đất, là Ánh Sáng thế gian”. Chúa xử dụng động từ "là" chứ không phải động từ
"trở nên". Chúa nói: “Các con -Người Kitô hữu - rất cần thiết cho cuộc sống của con người, cho những
sinh hoạt của con người.” Chúa còn nhấn mạnh: "Các con LÀ muối đất!" chứ Chúa không nói: Các con
PHẢI TRỞ NÊN muối đất! Như vậy có nghĩa là gì?
Là những người Kitô Hữu, chúng ta phải lắng nghe và áp dụng Lời Chúa. Chúng ta sẽ thấy rằng
mình chỉ có một con đường để chọn lựa, không còn con đường nào khác hơn. Đó là làm cho cuộc sống
của con người và đồng loại tăng trưởng và thăng tiến hơn, như công dụng của muối và ánh sáng. Chúng
ta đừng khoe khoang những việc làm tốt của chúng ta, nhưng hãy âm thầm để cho người khác nhận ra mà
ngợi khen Cha các con ở trên Trời.
Vậy: Nếu tôi chỉ là một hạt muối, một đốm lửa nhỏ lập lòe, leo lét?
Dầu mỗi người chúng ta chỉ là một hạt muối tí xíu, một đốm lửa nhỏ; nhưng vì sự hiện diện của
chúng ta, làm cuộc sống của nhân loại trên thế gian này vui hơn, sống động hơn, phong phú hơn và đáng
yêu hơn. Mỗi người trong gia đình và cộng đoàn kết hợp lại để trở thành những gói muối, những nắm
muối. Tuy chúng ta không ướp được hết tất cả, nhưng ướp được những người xung quanh chúng ta. Chúa
nói chúng ta là ngọn đèn, chứ không muốn chúng ta là một ngọn hải đăng. Nhưng ngọn đèn này phải đủ
sáng, để soi cho những người trong nhà, những người xung quanh chúng ta.
Nhưng: Nếu muối hết vị mặn và đèn sắp cạn dầu? Chúng còn được xử dụng vào việc chi nữa? Vậy
chúng ta phải làm gì? Theo tôi: Chúng ta là con Chúa. Chúng ta hơn những hạt muối và những ngọn đèn
gấp vạn lần. Chúng ta đón nhận vị mặn của muối và chất đốt cho đèn bằng quả tim đầy yêu thương từ
Thiên Chúa, từ Lời của Chúa. Nếu quả tim chúng ta hết yêu thương, hết chất đốt và hết vị mặn; thì chúng
ta hãy nạp chúng đầy lại bằng Tình Yêu, trong Tình Yêu và với
Tình Yêu của Thiên Chúa. Chúng ta đừng thất vọng, nản chí!
Chúng ta còn có cơ hội: Hãy để cho Tình Yêu của Chúa bao trùm
trên chúng ta và vị mặn, ánh sáng của chúng ta lại có công hiệu trở
lại.
Kính chúc quý ông bà và anh chị em trong Mùa Chay Thánh này là
những Hạt Muối và Ánh Sáng cho đời.

“Con người, một thụ tạo vừa có thân xác vừa thiêng liêng, diễn tả
và tiếp nhận các thực tại thiêng liêng qua dấu chỉ và biểu tượng vật chất.
Con người có tính xã hội, nên cần dấu chỉ và biểu tượng để giaotiếp với tha
nhân qua ngôn ngữ, cử chỉ, hành động. Trong tương quan với Thiên Chúa
cũng thế.” (GLHTCG 1146)
Không thể có lễ hội nếu không có nghi thức kèm theo những dấu chỉ và
biểu tượng. Bỏ hết đi những dấu chỉ và biểu tượng, đời sống tôn giáo sẽ
nghèo nàn và tẻ nhạt. Ngược lại, quá chú tâm đến nghi thức mà đánh mất
nội tâm, tôn giáo có nguy cơ biến thành mê tín dị đoan. Khi cử hành phụng
vụ, tất cả con người chúng ta phải tham dự vào việc cử hành, không những
tâm tình, trí tuệ mà tất cả mọi cơ năng của thân xác.
I. CON NGƯỜI CẦN DẤU CHỈ VÀ BIỂU TƯỢNG
Giả như chỉ có lời nói xuông thôi, tình yêu của chúng ta đối với nhau sẽ
như thế nào? Trong những giờ phút quan trọng nhất của đời người, dù vui
hay buồn, cần phải có những lời nói và cử chỉ kèm theo mới có thể đánh
động lòng người. Trong lãnh vực tôn giáo, thì cử chỉ nghi lễ càng cần thiết
để diễn tả những mầu nhiệm, những gì mà lời nói không thể nào diễn tả hết
được ý nghĩa.
Thật vậy, lời nói có khả năng làm cho người ta bùi ngùi cảm động, chạm tự
ái hay bị tổn thương, hoặc trấn an... là vì trong lời nói đó có những ‘dấu
hiệu’ diễn đạt tình mến hay khinh khi... Hơn nữa, con người có tính xã hội
nên rất cần đến dấu chỉ và biểu tượng để giao tiếp. Tuy không làm nên cuộc
sống, nhưng nghi lễ lại rất cần cho con người vì nó trao ban một ý nghĩa,
làm cho con người trở thành người hơn, như chất keo gắn kết mọi người, vì
không có nghi lễ, con người sẽ chỉ làm việc như con ong cái kiến.
Biểu tượng là những yếu tố vật chất hữu hình mà qua đó người ta kiến tạo
cho nó một ý nghĩa theo tiến trình sau:
Trước tiên, dấu chỉ phải là một yếu tố hữu hình, ví dụ: màu sắc, hình
ảnh, vật thể…
Thứ đến, nhờ dấu chỉ hữu hình này mà chúng ta thấy được một cái khác
nó, ví dụ: nhìn khói nghĩ tới lửa, quốc kỳ nghĩ tới tổ quốc…
Sau cùng, biểu tượng hướng chúng ta đến một ý nghĩa hay một thực tại
ngoài tầm kinh nghiệm cảm giác. Ví dụ: màu đỏ chỉ máu tử đạo, ngón
tay chỉ sức mạnh …
Tuy nhiên, dấu chỉ nhiều khi cũng có nghĩa tương phản, (nước chỉ sự sống
hoặc sự chết), hoặc sự vật tự nó không có nghĩa nhưng do người ta quy ước,
hoặc dấu chỉ biểu tượng cho một ý nghĩa khác nhau tùy theo nền văn hóa
hay địa phương (màu trắng chỉ tang tóc đối với người Việt, còn Tây phương
lại dùng màu đen).
