More than 800 million people in developing countries
live in rural areas–the majority relying entirely on what
they can grow themselves in order to survive.
Through our work, not only are scientists and institutions
provided with the knowledge they need to support their
own work, but also smallholder farmers are helped to
lose less of their crops to pests and diseases, improve
crop quality and yield, and create better livelihoods for
their familes.
These are just two examples of the thousands of people helped by our work:
Elishililia Alex in Tanzania has been
trained to use better techniques to
fertilize and protect her maize. She has
more than doubled her crop yield.
Harpal Singh, a smallholder farmer in
northern India, has used a new advisory
service delivered to his mobile phone
through a CABI partnership with mobile
service providers. His earnings have
increased by 50% and his sugarcane
harvest, threatened by a serious aphid
attack, was saved.
