FROM THE PRESIDENT
The cornerstone is the anchor upon which the strength of a building rests.
Likewise, the root is the foundation upon which the entire tree depends for
sustenance. In the same fashion, the patriarch is the steward of an infinity of
offsprings from one generation to the next.
Indeed, going before others does not always mean fading away into the
twilight nor entering the autumn of one’s life but the emergence of a wisened brood
upon which the torch of knowledge becomes a repository of mementoes passed on
from one era to the next.
Often these chronologically gifted individuals whose wealth of experience have become the virtual teacher of life in
an almost century old organization are lost in oblivion such that their voices are seldom heard where the primacy of their
voices are, in truth and in fact, the foretaste of things to come.
Learning to value their ways means concern for the welfare of the organization and beyond. Taking their words as
gospel truth instead of grains of salt have worked wonders to many an organization and to life as well.
Hence, the importance of their existence in this complicated world cannot be completely ignored and undermined.
Looking forward means valuing their impartial insights Imbibing their insights means adding strength to a continuing legacy
which forms the bedrock of a formidable organization.
It is true that the Rotary Club of Manila is a haven of chronologically gifted captains of industry who stand among the
best in the Philippines and the world. With a wisdom culled from several years of trading, investing and professionalism, they
have catapulted the first and then the largest Rotary club in Asia to the lofty throne it holds in the district and the rest of the
archipelago.
Looking back to the days of their youthful glow, their worthwhile projects and activities have made a significant
impact on Philippine society as they moved mountains and hills to make life a little better for Filipinos, especially those who
belong to the marginalized sectors of society. It was their collective efforts at the prime of their youth which have made the
Rotary Club of Manila a by-word in almost every field of endeavor.
Now is their time to shine their gems to those who are bound to follow in their stead. Ideas which have worked for
ages tend to be forgotten, but reminiscence of things past always finds its way to a young Rotarian’s heart. The respect due
them is but a drop in the bucket but their tried and tested ways have long been an anticipated tradition which have worked
wonders in more ways than one, in preserving the significance of the Rotary Club of Manila and its role in nation building.
Counting among a vast majority, the chronologically gifted gentlemen whose initiatives have placed the Rotary Club
of Manila in the map of the world deserve the supreme accolades of a thousand fold as they continue to keep the torch of
camaraderie and fellowship in the realm of selfless service burning in the hearts and minds of every Manila Rotarian who
only want the best for his brethren in the community.
To the fine gentlemen who are considered “gems” of this socio-civic organization, I take my hat off to their pioneering
efforts and continuing desire to make the Rotary Club of Manila the best in the world. After all, one who has seen it all is the
one who knows best the hidden formula leading to its success. Heeding their advice is the key to unlocking the bright future
in store for each and every Manila Rotarian as we all approach the crossroads of the founding of the Rotary movement in the
Philippines. Towards a bigger Rotary Club of Manila, I salute each and every chronologically gifted Manila Rotarian whose
zest for the finer things in life make them a class above the rest.
Looking back does not mean retarding growth but learning from the lessons of history.
On a lighter note, I wish to thank all Manila Rotarians who participated in the recent District Conference. Your whole
hearted participation indicates your commitment to the cause of Rotary and its significance to mankind.

DISCON 2012
Rotary International District 3810 Conference
March 16-17, Friday-Saturday, at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila
The annual Rotary International District 3810 Conference held on March 16-17, 2012, at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila,
is a culmination of every Rotary year where Rotarians gather for two (2) consecutive days to imbibe a well balanced and
comprehensive program of Rotary Information, Fun and Fellowship painstakingly prepared by the District Governor together
with his working committees. This unique gathering enables Rotarians to experience the real meaning and purpose of the
DISCON which is to advance the Object of Rotary through fellowship, inspirational addresses of distinguished leaders and
resource speakers and discussion of Rotary related issues and concerns. Through a fruitful learning from these resource
speakers and a more meaningful camaraderie among Rotarians and their spouses, DISCON 2012 hopes to be able to
energize Rotarians with a renewed vigor and sense of purpose, hence making it imperative for them to revisit their
commitment to Rotary in service to their homes, their communities and the world. The event likewise showcases successful
club and district activities and projects accomplished during the first half of the Rotary year.

United States foreign aid agency that is helping lead the fight against global poverty. Created by the U.S. Congress in 2004
on good policies, country ownership, and results.

PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION AND CHILD CARE
GENERICS v. BRANDED
Elias D. Adamos, M.D.
Many patients are asking whether they should take the generic version of a certain branded drug that they have
been taking for quite a period of time now. The question goes on and on most especially to those who are taking
maintenance medications for chronic conditions, such as hypertension, not to mention those who are on regular anticholesterol
medicines.
The answer to the question of generics v. branded is a standard one. Let’s us take Lipitor as an example. The
generic name of Lipitor is atorvastatin. The generic drug atorvastatin that is available in the market would come from
different pharmaceutical companies. These companies either manufacture the drug themselves or they only market the drug
that emanates from pharmaceutical companies from local-based laboratories or from abroad. The generic version of Lipitor,
which is as previously said – atorvastatin, is highly likely to be effective as the branded one. I supposed it would be cheaper.
A generic drug contains the same chemical as the corresponding branded drug. If it is available in a big drugstore
like “Mercury Drug” then it must be carrying the seal of FDA approval. FDA legally determines the “bioequivalent” of generics
drug to a brand-name drug. This simply means that the blood concentrations of the generic drug once taken inside the body
would be the same chemical concentration in the blood that is produced by a brand-name drug. Many advertisements say
that generic drugs are safe and effective.
Many generic drugs are produced in other countries. Research would point out that many overseas countries make
mistakes in the manufacture of generic drugs. Even U.S.-based manufacturers admit to some errors in the manufacture of
generic drugs. Although our FDA monitors and regulates the manufacture, marketing, and sale of generic drugs, I am
crossing my fingers that they are able to carry out their responsibilities. I am also not aware as to whether they are given
sufficient budget for them to carry out their duties and responsibilities to ensure the safety and efficacy of all generic drugs
available in the local market that had quickly sprung out like mushrooms.
Personally, if I’m on a maintenance regimen for let us say my diabetes, hypertension, and my cholesterol then I
would try to shift to generic drugs and after maybe two or three weeks I would try to see if my diabetes and other conditions
are controlled by the generic equivalent of what I used to take. I would know by then if I would revert back to my branded
medicines. Another thing, if I were to take antibiotics for an infection inside my body (pneumonia, for example), I would take
the tried and tested branded antibiotic and would not take a chance to experiment on a new generic drug (whether it may be
cheaper or ads had put forth its efficacy) for me to avoid the infection or infectious process to become severe.
