About this Finding Guide 

This finding guide provides a description of the records in the Administrative Resources Files 

Series of the Henri Nouwen fonds. It has been prepared by exporting archival descriptions from 

the in-house database of The Henri J.M. Nouwen Archives and Research Collection. It consists 

of a series-level description followed by file and item level descriptions. All descriptions follow 

the Canadian descriptive standard Rules for Archival Description.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: Series consists of administrative resources files which 

were maintained for Nouwen by Nouwen's 

administrative staffs from 1983 to 1997. These files 

contain materials collected by Nouwen in order to assist 

him with his roles as pastor, writer, researcher, and 

friend. In addition to subject-based material such as 

newspaper clippings and brochures, it is evident that 

Nouwen's administrative assistants at Daybreak used 

these files to hold administrative material related to 

liturgical events such as Christmas, Lent, and Easter, 

as well as other aspects of Nouwen's duties in the 

community. These files were likely maintained as a 

resource for Nouwen regarding his daily work. 

The titles of the files are taken directly from the file 

labels created by Nouwen and his administrative 

assistants, unless otherwise noted. The files are 

arranged by subject or topic (such as Latin America, 

Vincent van Gogh, or Abbey of the Genesee), are in 

alphabetical order, and materials within the files have 

been maintained chronologically. Many of the materials 

have been placed in this series because they contain 

annotations, either by Nouwen or an assistant, saying 

"File" with the subject or name or "File - Resource files."

SCOPE AND CONTENT: File consists of a letter from Gregory Tucker requesting 

to spend time at Daybreak. File also includes a 

handwritten note, not in Nouwen's hand, summarizing 

the letter and saying that Nouwen is OK with the stay, if 

Tucker agrees to work with the Daybreak residents. 

File also consists of a letter from Joe Egan, Kathy 

Bruner and Sue Mosteller to Nouwen asking him to look 

over a document to be presented to Council on 

accompaniment. Attached are Nouwen’s typed notes 

and thoughts on accompaniment.

in regards to Advent meditations for 1987 at Daybreak, 

two copies of Nouwen’s typed proposal for the Advent 

meditations, an original and copy of a series of sketches 

with a typed notes containing a passage for the 

Reconciliation Service on December 15, 1987 at 

Dayspring. The file also contains a prayer booklet 

created for December 1, 1987 Dayspring service.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: File consists of materials pertaining to Advent activities 

at Daybreak in 1988, such materials include an 

unsigned typed letter from Nouwen to Leslee Alfano, 

Warren Broussard, Al Chaffee, and Ken Gallinger in 

regards to the order of the Reconciliation Service to be 

held at Dayspring on December 9, 1988, with the order 

attached and an original typed copy of the ‘Making the 

circle full’ Advent book for 1988. This version does not 

include the pictures themselves, although space has 

been designated for them. File includes a letter from 

Eric F. Kyle at St. Joseph’s Church in East Rutherford, 

New Jersey to Nouwen that accompanied the Advent 

literature requested by Nouwen, date October 11, 1988 

and a copy of a long typed letter from Nouwen to the 


Daybreak community concerning the faithful celebration 

of advent and Christmas at their appropriate times.

consists of a letter from Elizabeth Morris, which 

accompanied information and articles related to life, 

death and AIDS, a letter and informational material from 

Rev. Ken (Kenneth T.) South, on behalf of AIDS 

National Interfaith Network, inviting Nouwen to be a 

speaker and a copy of a type letter of response from 

Connie Ellis, Nouwen’s administrative assistant 

declining the invitation. File includes handwritten notes 

in Nouwen hand related to the AIDS Project LA.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: File consists of a memorandum for Nouwen from one of 

his administrative assistants with a message regarding 

Bill Reid (St. Michael's College, Toronto). Reid was 

requesting help from Nouwen in planning an alumni 

retreat in the fall of 1989. He needed help on planning 

the format and theme, and wished to speak with 

Nouwen on the telephone. Memo says that Nouwen 

could be reached in Winnipeg, but his schedule 

changed and would call Reid himself when he returned 

to L'Arche Daybreak in mid-July.

Alvear about Chile. The booklets were published in

DATE(S): [between 1975 - 1980] 


SCOPE AND CONTENT: File consists of eight pages of typed reading notes titled 

"Over Spiritualiteit in Amrika" [On Spirituality in 

America]. The notes place spirituality in political, social 

economic, and religious context in the United States. 

These notes were possibly taken from a Dutch book on 

American spirituality, and could have been used for a 

class or for research for an article. 


Reading notes are in Dutch. 

Notes are typed, and on lined notebook paper (hole 

punched). 

Notes contain handwritten annotations by Nouwen. 

Date assigned according to political context: after 

Watergate and the end of the Vietnam War.

Daybreak Dayspring addition, and correspondence 

regarding the apartment addition.

with Friends of L'Arche Board of Directors information 

for 1991-1992.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 0.3 cm of textual records.- 1 photograph : col. 35mm. 

SCOPE AND CONTENT: File consists of two copies of Rembrandt’s self-portrait, 

a Spring 1989 newsletter from The Pierpont Morgan 

Library with an article mentioning Rembrandt and a 

guide to the Rembrandt exhibit at the Rijksmuseum with 

a small print of the Rembrandt's Prodigal Son. Also 

included is a postcard depicting "The Storm on the Sea 

of Galilee" by Rembrandt and a slide featuring the same 

painting. 

File also consists of an article about an art installation 

titled "Celestial Vault at Kijkduin" by James Turrell. This 

was an installation in the dunes near The Hague, 

created by Turrell (an American artist). There is also an 

article titled "Een cilinder vol zeegeruis" by Jan Wolkers, 

a Dutch author and artist. 



File contains material in Dutch. 

The slide and postcard are kept together by a sheet of 

paper with two annotations in different hands: the first: 

"for Henri" and the second "File w. slides". It is likely 

these were sent to Nouwen with a letter (unknown).

SCOPE AND CONTENT: File consists of copies of four articles pertaining to 

various subjects. It is apparent that some of the articles 

were sent to Nouwen by friends or colleagues. These 

articles include: 

1. Blue Mountain: A Journal for Spiritual Living (volume 

3, number 3, July 1992). 

2. "The Haunted Bird: The Death and Life of Jerzy 

Kosinski" by John Taylor (New York, July 15, 1991). 

3. "The Education of Man" from The Prison Meditations 

of Father Delp (Herder, 1963, pp. 93-97). [Introduction 

of this book was written by Merton]. 

4. "Impasse and Dark Night" by Constance Fitzgerald, 

O.C.D. from Living with Apocalypse: Spiritual 

Resources for Social Compassion, editor Tilden H. 

Edwards (Harper and Row, 1984). 






Annotation: "F Articles" ; "F Resources Articles" 

Article number 2 is accompanied by the address of Fred 

Bratman. 

The title for article number 3 is written in an unknown

SCOPE AND CONTENT: File consists of a collection of seventeen copied articles, 

copies of chapters from books and copies of newspaper 

clippings on a variety of subjects and from a variety of 

sources. File includes an essay by Kay Evens called 

“An Anglican reflection on the work of Henri J.M. 

Nouwen” and handwritten notes in Nouwen's hand on 

confidence. 

These articles include: 

1. "The Way of Stillness" from Athos: The Holy 

Mountain by Philip Sherrard (Woodstock, NY: The 

Overlook Press). 

2. "An Anglican Reflection on the Work of Henri J.M. 

Nouwen", an essay by Katherine (Kay) Evans for a 

course called The Life of Prayer. Essay is from January 

1985, and includes a letter from Kay Evans to Nouwen 

expressing her appreciation that he has agreed to look 

at her paper. 

3. "Father Zossima and His Visitors" by Fyodor 

Dostoyevsky (from The Brothers Karamazov). 

4. Photocopy of page 116 from an unknown play [The 

Ballad of the Sad Cafe by Carson McCullers, 1951], in 

which the Narrator speaks about love. 

5. Folder with title "Selected Homilies" and copies of 

those homilies with an introduction by the editor, 

Reverend Charles E. Yost, S.C.J. (published by Rev.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: File consists of a copy of a letter to the Daybreak 

Council from Nouwen (dated January 20, 1989) with a 

proposal to spend a few months in Europe writing. He 

says he has been stimulated by the Daybreak 

community, and he is "filled with ideas and insights that 

want to be expressed in a literary form. Especially the 

Parable of the Prodigal Son and the portrayal of that 

parable by Rembrandt have increasingly emerged as a 

way to give expression to many of the things I have 


lived here." He says he collected material on the 

parable while in Winnipeg [1988], but has been unable 

to really sit down and write. He would like permission to 

go to Europe for April and May of 1989 to write, visit 

with Jean Vanier, and see Cardinal Simonis. He also 

suggests that a long-term plan be made regarding his 

writing.

"The call to be reborn as a clown really had a lot of 

significance for me and I do feel that all the members of 

the Daybreak community helped me in this marvellous 

rebirth. Now I will need a lot of help to use the years 

ahead of me to grow up as a reborn clown so that I can 

announce the good news of Jesus with new conviction 

and new hope. As Pastor of Daybreak I am glad that I 

can invite everybody of the community to be reborn and 

to be clowns for God." He mentions Easter, Holy Week, 

Connie's illness, Lori's baptism, Mark and Moahengi's 

reception into the Catholic Church, and the first 

communion of several people. All of these events 

"became part of the large mystery of our becoming 

through Jesus the beloved sons and daughters of God."

blank, but on every few pages, there is a notecard glued 

in with a drawing or a word drawn by a member of 

Daybreak (and signed by the artist). This notebook was 

likely personalised for Nouwen by the L'Arche Daybreak 

community before he went on his sabbatical in 1995.
