Producti<strong>on</strong> history<br />

Errol John, born in 1924, started as<br />

an actor in Trinidad, before moving<br />

to England in 1951, after the Sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

World War.<br />

Al<strong>on</strong>gside roles <strong>on</strong> stage and <strong>on</strong> screen,<br />

John launched a playwriting career, and<br />

in 1957 w<strong>on</strong> an Observer competiti<strong>on</strong><br />

with his play, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mo<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> a <strong>Rainbow</strong> <strong>Shawl</strong>.<br />

Although a L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> West End producti<strong>on</strong><br />

was promised as a result, the play was<br />

instead recorded as a radio producti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

before being staged at the Royal Court<br />

<strong>Theatre</strong> in December 1958.<br />
