Message froM the President annual fund aPPeal 2010-2011 

This year’s annual report reflects the 

dedication and creativity of our faculty, 

staff and volunteers. Despite challenges, 

we continue to meet our mission. On Memorial 

Day, we hosted our first-ever 5K Run/Walk 

Challenge raising much-needed funds for our 

veterans center and brought hundreds of people 

to our beautiful campus. The 23rd annual golf 

tournament was a resounding success allowing 

us to purchase academic equipment and fund 

new scholarships. Our scholarship reception 

continues to be a highlight of the spring. This 

year we added a twist to the event and invited 

the students to sit on stage during the ceremony. 

The joy exuding from the room was palpable 

and this ceremony continues to be one of my 

favorite events of the year. 

The Foundation has done an outstanding job 

developing relationships with alumni, friends, 

students, businesses, and the community in 

a meaningful way. The volunteer board of 

directors has given time, expertise, and gifts 

to help secure the future of the college. The 

annual gifts given by you and other likeminded 

individuals have provided the college 

community with new technology and resources 

in the classroom and laboratories. 

With an enrollment of 12,000 students and 

more than 125,000 individuals having walked 

through the doors of Holyoke Community 

College or having taken classes online, we are 

a major economic force in Hampden and

Hampshire counties. Once again, we have 

provided the skills and training necessary for 

our students to compete for today’s jobs. We 

have also helped to make our students better 

managers, nurses, teachers, chefs, EMTs – 

the list is nearly endless. It may sound like 

bragging, and it is; HCC does a wonderful job 

preparing students for whatever life holds for 

them. We have the second lowest tuition and 

fees in the Commonwealth while we continue 

to upgrade our classrooms and campus providing 

an environment conducive to learning and 

academic achievement. 

These accomplishments would not have been 

possible without you. On behalf of our students, 

I offer a heartfelt thank you.

Holyoke Community College has seen 

an historic rise in its enrollment 

over the past few years. While 

we welcomed the opportunity to educate 

more students, our appropriations from the 

Commonwealth did not keep pace with this 

increase in enrollment. In fact, state support 

of HCC was less than 32% last year. Even 

though HCC has worked hard to keep its fees 

and tuition affordable, the increasing cost of 

textbooks and gasoline – among other living 

and educational expenses – can become too 

much of a burden for our students and their 

families to bear. 

Without the Annual 

Fund, some of our 

students might have 

abandoned their 

dreams of completing 

their education. 

Thankfully, the 

support we have 

received from 

you has made a 

difference. The 

HCC Foundation has 

continued to award 

scholarships to financially needy students, as 

well as provide educational technology for the 

classrooms and laboratories so our faculty can 

utilize the most innovative and up-to-date 

teaching tools. 

This past year alone, the 2011 Annual Fund 

raised approximately $360,000 from alumni, 

friends, faculty and staff, corporations, and 

foundations. For those of you who participated 

this past year, thank you. For those of you 

who were not able to make a donation, please 

consider contributing this year. Our 2012 fiscal 

year ends June 30, 2012.

We Lost a True Friend 

This past spring the Holyoke Community 

College Foundation and indeed the 

entire college community lost a dear 

friend when alumnus Jack Doyle ’54 passed 

away. Jack was a very active member of the 

greater Holyoke community having served on 

a variety of boards. He was a CPA by training 

and brought those keen analytical and financial 

skills to a number of nonprofit settings. He 

had served as the Treasurer for the HCC 

Foundation for more than 20 years bringing 

a steady hand to the management of its 

endowment. During his tenure, the investments

Marieb Chair for Teaching Excellence recipient. 

This chair was made possible through the generosity 

of Professor Emeritus Elaine Marieb, Ph.D., to recognize 

outstanding faculty. Nominations were sought from faculty, 

staff, and students. Those nominated submitted material 

reviewed by a committee of past Marieb recipients, HCC 

Foundation board members, and a college representative. 

Professor Beers has been a professor of history at the college 

since 1999. She has been an active participant in our wellknown 

Learning Communities program, as well as our Honors 

program. She has done tremendous research in the areas of 

animal advocacy, women’s rights, and social justice and is the 

author of a book on the animal advocacy movement.

Dr. Richard Leon Provost ‘49 Funds Six 

Scholarships 

In the last year, several alumni have created 

scholarships or have funded additional 

endowed scholarships. We thank these 

alumni for their generosity. Here, we 

celebrate the accomplishments of Dr. Richard 

Leon Provost ‘49, who has now funded six 

scholarships through the HCC Foundation. 

Dr. Provost is the first Holyoke Junior College 

graduate to earn a Ph.D. (from East Texas 

University). Provost taught psychology and 

education for 34 years, at East Texas State 

University, Northern Illinois University, Texas 

A&M University, Southwestern Community 

College, and Kearney College in Nebraska. 

As an educator, he has a history of innovation 

on the campuses where he taught. He created 

the first learning/practicum programs so that 

students could combine classroom learning 

with hands-on learning in preschools, nursing 

homes, and area schools; he was asked to teach 

the first psychology course within a nursing 

program; and he developed a 20-year plan for 

growth of the education department programs 

within the university. 

Throughout his teaching career, he has also 

been recognized for his connection to the wider 

community. At the request of board members 

of one area education association, he developed 

a plan for consolidating 21 school districts 

down to 14. He also introduced the teaching 

of juvenile delinquency and adolescent 

psychology in a police academy in Nebraska, 

conducted psychological screening of potential 

police cadets, and created profiles of difficult 

criminal cases on the city and county level. He 

has also written eight books and 15 articles on 

genealogy and is an award-winning artist in 

juried shows. 

When asked to give advice to HCC students 

Provost said, “You have a smorgasbord of 

opportunities in college. Encouragement, 

education, and training abound for you. Seize 

every minute and live it. Never give it away. 

Commit yourself to doing a super job in school 

and don’t be afraid to accept help from other 

people. Always do the best that you can.”

Creating a legaCy - the frost soCiety 

The birth of a grandchild. A planned 

trip to a distant country. The first cold 

snap. End-of-the-year tax planning. 

Receiving an inheritance. These are a few of 

the many reasons that prompt individuals to 

contact their professional advisors to update 

or create estate plans. Whatever the reason, 

once the discussion begins it is important to 

consider the role charitable giving can play in 

shaping one’s legacy through thoughtful estate 

planning. 

To help with this process, the HCC Foundation 

has in place a planned giving program as a 

service to the thousands of friends and alumni 

of Holyoke Community College. Planned gifts 

can be used to support HCC while at the same 

time provide for loved ones, offer advantageous 

tax benefits, and, in certain cases, provide 

income for one or more persons for a fixed term 

of years. Creating a legacy is a tremendous 

opportunity to make assets built during a 

lifetime available to future generations. 

The Holyoke Community College Foundation 

has created the Frost Society as a means of 

recognizing individuals who have committed 

resources to support the future of HCC through 

deferred or planned gifts in their estate plans. 

Such gifts perpetuate the memory of donors and 

continue to address the values and traditions 

important to them, their families, and their 

communities for generations to come. 

Frost Society members have made a personal 

commitment to the Holyoke Community 

College Foundation in one or more of the 

following ways: 

• Including the HCC Foundation in a bequest 

provision in a will 

• Naming the HCC Foundation as a 

beneficiary of an IRA, 401(k), or other

23rd annual hCC golf ClassiC hCC MeMorial day 5K run/walK Challenge 

This year was a year of great physical 

activity for the HCC Foundation staff! 

We began the year with our traditional 

September golf tournament, in its 23rd year. 

Two very generous donors, board member 

William Bagshaw and local attorney Frank 

Fitzgerald, spearheaded a campaign to endow 

a scholarship in memory of 

HCC GOLF Deborah Ferriter. Deb was 

CLASSIC a valuable employee in the 

legal offices of Fitzgerald & 

Fitzgerald, PC, and also happened to be very 

helpful in assisting the HCC Foundation in 

securing sponsorships for the tournament. She 

had a lifelong love of animals. When she passed 

away unexpectedly in 2010, we all wanted to 

help. 

The Foundation committed to allocating half 

of the proceeds from the tournament for a 

scholarship in

for a deserving 

veterinary 

technology 

student at 

the college. 

We have one 

of the few 

veterinary 

technology 

programs in 

the area and 

this seemed 

like an excellent way to honor her love of 

animals and have her legacy continue in a 

meaningful way. With the generosity of 

our golfers, we were able to fulfill that 

commitment. 

With the golf tournament details 

wrapped up in the fall, we turned 

our attention to something a little 

faster…like a road race. President Emeritus 

David Bartley formed a small committee that 

met throughout the winter to plan the firstever 

HCC 5K Run/Walk Challenge. Held on 

Memorial Day, this event raised funds for our 

newly opened Veterans Center on campus. We 

had over 100 runners, lots of volunteers, and 

while Mother Nature threatened to disrupt 

the event, she ultimately provided pleasant 

running conditions 

for our participants.

will be used 

to expand 

programming 

for our growing 

population of student veterans. Our thanks to 

all the corporations and individuals who made 

these events such a success.

7 th annual President’s dinner 

Donors and friends were treated to a 

very special evening this past spring 

when our Business 260 students gave 

their presentations on area businesses at our 

annual President’s Dinner. The dozen students 

fortunate enough to take part in this special 

capstone class had the opportunity to visit six 

area businesses and then present their findings 

at the dinner. Nearly all the business leaders 

came to the event and with the business 

students seated at each of the tables, plenty of 

interesting 

conversations 

ensued.

were also able to showcase the many talents of 

our culinary and music students, as well as our 

faculty.

Your Generosity Makes a Difference 

The commitment of our donors over 

the years has allowed us to increase 

the number of scholarships awarded 

to students for the past decade. Your gifts 

have brought that number from 43 in 2001 

to over 140 this past year. As generous as this 

commitment is, we don’t come close to helping 

all the students who apply. 

This year we hosted our largest-ever scholarship 

reception. The Forum theater in our Fine 

and Performing Arts building was occupied 

with donors and the family members of 

our scholarship recipients. The recipients 

occupied nearly every square inch of the stage.

Victor Thomas. Professor Emeritus Thomas 

passed away in early 2011. He was a 50-year 

employee of the institution and a particular 

friend to the HCC Foundation. He helped 

found our January Florida snowbird lunches 

for retired HCC employees and friends. He 

helped raise funds for our Fund the Future 

Scholarship, contributed his own funds to 

help the library, and endowed a scholarship 

in his name. We were graced with his family 

members at the reception and his son, Victor 

Thomas Jr., shared an emotional time with us 

as he recounted his father’s history with the 

institution. Victor’s legacy continues to live on 

here at the college in so many ways.

Business Students Soak Up Success Secrets 

A 

dozen very lucky students enrolled in the trips throughout the semester. They researched 

college’s Spring 2011 Living Case Studies local businesses, asked probing questions, wrote 

business class learned firsthand the papers, and made presentations at the end of 

secrets for entrepreneurial success from Holyoke 

Community College alumni. Working with 

professors Anne Potter and Ellen Majka, 

the students did both in-class work and field 

the semester at the annual President’s Dinner. 

Businesses as varied as the Holyoke Mall to the 

Hu Ke Lau opened their doors and their minds to 

these eager students. 

These businesses shared the background on their organizational structures, products/services, 

marketing, and in many cases, gave advice on career direction and business opportunities. Our deepest
