A co-production between The Riverfront and Feel Good Newport
Celebrating Newport’s 10th anniversary of
City Status, The Riverfront has programmed
two productions that celebrate Newport’s
creative talents and the people who live and
work here.
Produced and written by Josephine d’Arby
In The Newport Monologues we turn the spotlight on our own stories and
experiences in our much loved City. We put the extraordinary and sometimes
hidden stories of Newportonians centre stage, in a night of inspiring and surprising
entertainment centered around our own colourful tales.
From the actors, to the stories, to the audience,
this project promises to be Newport through and
through. This shared experience is designed to tap
into the wealth of stories and talent here, and focuses
on what we all have in common and the parts of our
lives that can touch or amuse each other.
night where you stand to learn a lot more about
Newport and your neighbours than you perhaps
thought possible.
“Shoo!”
Why can’t he be left alone?
The story follows their relationship over a year, from
their beginnings as enemies, to their conclusion as
grudging friends.
Dr Faustus
Scene Productions in association with Redbridge
Drama Centre present a brand new adaptation of
Marlowe’s Dr Faustus
Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge and
unlimited power, Dr Faustus makes a pact with the
devil and in turn relinquishes his soul.
Scene Productions takes this classic story of
damnation and presents it as a deliciously dark
and terrifically twisted fairytale. Using stunning
puppetry, live illusion and trickery; avenging angels
and dastardly demons are brought to life as three
performers conjure a fantastical world of magic,
mischief and the macabre.
“There’s a million other people in the world that I
would rather be than me....”
Meet Sancho Panza. A son, grieving for his father,
lonely in his thoughts. As he remembers the stories
his dad used to tell him about Don Quixote, the
comically idealistic knight himself bursts into his
world and takes him on an adventure.
The Adventures of Sancho Panza is a contemporary
adaptation of Cervantes’ classic tale Don Quixote,
retold through the eyes of Quixote’s companion
Sancho Panza. In a world that blurs real life and
fiction, this unlikely duo meet an array of characters
from dukes to barbers, robbers, giants and even the
old lady from next door on a journey of surprising
discovery for Sancho Panza.
Using masks and puppetry, an inclusive cast of
five conjures up the limitless imagination of the
eccentric nobleman and brings you vivid live music
and song that will transport you across times and
Newport
Cathedral Choir
With guest soloist Andrew Jenkins, Jeremy Blasby
(piano), directed by Christopher Baton
One of the jewels in the city’s cultural crown,
Newport Cathedral Choir returns to The Riverfront
to give its eagerly awaited Family Carol Concert.
Since last year the choir has sung in Christ Church
Cathedral Oxford and Westminster Abbey, as well as
giving concerts in Newport Cathedral and outreach
concerts in Rhymney and Llantilio Crossenny. It has
also been heard twice on BBC Radio Wales.
Senior Chorister Oliver sang at H.M. The Queen’s
Diamond Jubilee Service at St Paul’s Cathedral
as a member of the forty strong Diamond Choir,
recruited from children aged 8-13 from all over
the United Kingdom. Oliver was the only boy from
Wales to sing in the choir. Choral Scholar Harvey
was a member of Only Boys Aloud, who memorably
came third in Britain’s Got Talent!
Once again the choir will delight us with music
old and new to celebrate the Christmas season,
and as usual there will be the chance for all the
audience to raise the roof, joining the choir in well
known carols.
If you liked last year’s panto Cinderella,
you’ll love this year’s Robin Hood. Come
join our band of merry men and women for
a show full of quick-fire slapstick, plenty of
jokes, great storytelling, lots of catchy songs,
not forgetting audience
participation.
Our exciting new
pantomime
Robin Hood has
something for
everyone plus
some great
characters to
love and hate.
There’s the
dastardly Sheriff of
Nottingham and his
evil mother Mandragoria,
everyone’s favourite best friend
Lee Mengo
Richard Ellis (Eastenders)
Kieran Self (My Family)
Much and his everso-slightly
mad mother
Dotty Doubtworthy, the
trusty Friar Tuck and Little
John and of course our hero and heroine
Robin Hood and his Maid Marion.
Robin’s fast-moving adventure is
written and directed by the multitalented
Richard Gauntlett who
gave us our fabulous Cinderella last
year. And many of that cast join us
again this year. We have everyone’s
favourite dame Lee Mengo returning
as Dotty, the versatile Richard Elis as
The Sheriff of Nottingham and funny
man Keiron Self as Much, who was such
a hit last year as Buttons and Elin Llwyd as
Maid Marion.
Woody Allen: A Documentary
Monday 6, Tuesday 7, Wednesday 8, 7.45pm
Director: Robert B Weide
Starring: Woody Allen, Diane Keaton and
Martin Scorsese
USA, 2012, 1 hour 53 minutes
If Wild Man Blues was a snapshot, Woody Allen: A Documentary
is a photo album. From his early days in Brooklyn via stand-up
comedy to his 47 years making movies, “America’s foremost
humorist” (as first wife Louise Lasser dubs him) gets a thorough
going-over from Curb Your Enthusiasm director Robert B.
Weide. Illustrated with clips and talking heads aplenty (not
least Allen’s), A Documentary starts enthusiastically. Running
through those “early funny ones”, the Oscar-winning Annie
Hall and critical darling Manhattan, the film is, accordingly, a
joy to watch. While early collaborators Tony Roberts and Diane
Keaton make appearances, ’80s muse/partner Mia Farrow is
unsurprisingly absent.
7 Days in Havana
Monday 13, Tuesday 14, 7.45pm,
Wednesday 15, 1pm & 7.45pm
Director: Various
Starring: Josh Hutcherson, Vladimir Cruz,
Emir Kusturica and Daniel Bruhl
Spain, France, Cuba, 2012, 2 hours 8 minutes
Seven directors offer their own unique visions of contemporary
Cuba in this episodic, intersecting lives drama set over the course
of seven days. Benicio Del Toro’s segment focuses on a tourist’s
initial impressions of the country; Juan Carlos Tabió’s explores some
common struggles and small pleasures experienced by the locals;
Laurent Cantet follows a religious Yoruba family as they prepare
to make an offering; Julio Madem plunges us into the middle of a
passionate love triangle; Gaspar Noé raises religious tension with
an exorcism; Elia Suleiman introduces us to a foreigner (played by
himself) who wanders through Havana anticipating an unknown
event; and Pablo Trapero finds a famed actor arriving in Havana to be
honoured for his craft.
A Royal Affair
Monday 20, Tuesday 21, 7.45pm
Wednesday 22, 1pm & 7.45pm
Director: Nikolaj Arcel
Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Mikkel Boe Folsgaard
and Alicia Vikander
Denmark, 2012, 2 hours 17 minutes
Helmer Nikolaj Arcel reaches back to 18th-century Denmark
to spin a real-life tale of intrigue, power, money, sex, love and
betrayal in the handsome, character driven historical drama
“A Royal Affair”. The British princess Caroline Mathilda marries
the mad King Christian VII, but soon enters a passionate affair
with his physician Johann Friedrich Struensee and they together
engineer a coup. The film stretches credibility and historical fact in
suggesting Queen Caroline Mathilda was the driving force behind
the enlightened reforms of the short-lived “Struensee era”.
Newport Art College
In 2003 Jo Haycock joined a BBC Radio Wales crew
who were recording a programme Art College
Days about the derelict listed building that was
Newport Art College. It was classed as something
as a cultural Mecca in its heyday – where Magnum
photographer, David Hurn founded the world class
Documentary Photography course back in the
1970’s. She went with Hurn and fellow lecturers,
along with the crew as they walked over broken
glass and discarded film reels recording their stories
and anecdotes of time spent there. The photos
Jo took that day of the building itself capture the
majestic neglect, ghostly corridors, vandalism and
living quarters of squatters back then.
Coral Houtman ‘Echo’
Video Drama Installation
The legend, as told by Ovid, is that Echo loves
Narcissus but is unable to express that love
because she does not have a voice of her own, and
Narcissus is unable to hear and respond to her call,
because he is trapped within self love, and his own
image. Echo is all sound – only her “echo” remains
after her death – and Narcissus is all image. This
multi-screen video installation will enable you to
choose their future and ours…
Coral Houtman is a fiction film
maker and a Senior Lecturer
season, The Riverfront and the
Newport Arts Development team up with young
people in Newport to produce a series of artworks
relating to the theme, Robin Hood. Who was he?
Are the stories really true or a myth? For those of
you budding young historians and artists interested
in getting involved, workshops will start running
during the autumn half term.
Please contact the Box Office for
