Regular Events Digwyddiadau Cyson 

First Wednesday is a regular series of 

lunchtime recitals at 1pm. A mixture of music 

is presented across the year including wind 

trios, string quartets, piano, classical guitar, 

harp and much more. 

A chance to meet up and enjoy music, with lunch 

or a drink in The Riverfront Café before or after 

the performance. 

Live Music Now! was founded in 1977 by the late 

Yehudi Menuhin to fulfil two important needs 

in British musical life: to give talented young 

professional musicians performing experience at 

the beginning of their careers, and to take highquality 

performances to people who would not 

otherwise have access to live music.

Cold Rolling and TIR 

Ballet Cymru, featuring Tanja Raman and Cerys Matthews 

Critics Circle Award winning company Ballet Cymru 

present an extraordinary double bill of new Welsh dance. 

Cold Rolling 

Following Ballet Cymru’s participation in the Welsh Cultural 

Olympiad Project, Adain Avion, Wales based 

choreographer Tanja Råman will be creating this 

new piece. Cold Rolling explores the ghosts and 

remnants of Ebbw Vale’s rich industrial past and 

animates the various processes of steelmaking 

into vibrant choreography. 

TIR 

Cerys Matthews’ iconic album of Welsh Folk 

Music is the inspiration for TIR. Choreographers 

Darius James and Amy Doughty will be using 11 

of the songs from the album to create a unique 

work especially for the dancers of Ballet Cymru. 

Cerys herself is collaborating with the company 

and will be playing the music live on stage with 

the company.

A co-production between The Riverfront and Feel Good Newport 

Celebrating Newport’s 10th anniversary of 

City Status, The Riverfront has programmed 

two productions that celebrate Newport’s 

creative talents and the people who live and 

work here. 

Produced and written by Josephine d’Arby 

In The Newport Monologues we turn the spotlight on our own stories and 

experiences in our much loved City. We put the extraordinary and sometimes 

hidden stories of Newportonians centre stage, in a night of inspiring and surprising 

entertainment centered around our own colourful tales. 

From the actors, to the stories, to the audience, 

this project promises to be Newport through and 

through. This shared experience is designed to tap 

into the wealth of stories and talent here, and focuses 

on what we all have in common and the parts of our 

lives that can touch or amuse each other. 

A touching, heart-warming, inspiring and humorous 

night where you stand to learn a lot more about 

Newport and your neighbours than you perhaps 

thought possible. 

This is a theatrical play based on recent interviews 

with real Newport citizens. If you would like to tell

Up-and-coming comedy genius and Edinburgh 

Comedy Award Winner Tim Key is set to be 

a hugely popular performer this year as he 

brings to Newport the hilariously lovely languid 

musings of his new show. ‘Masterslut’ is the 

follow up to his 2009 show, ‘The Slutcracker’ 

and is a blend of character comedy, poetry 

and stand-up, mixing short verse with longer 

stories, punctuated by oddly beautiful and

Bridget Christie 

Bridget Christie is a regular on the sketch and stand-up 

circuit, and brings her brand new show, War Donkey to 

Comedy Port following it’s premiere at The Edinburgh 

Festival. Do magicians use Vanish or magic to remove 

stains? What are Tory feminists? Why no Spielberg 

Donkey blockbuster? What is a Tiny Tyrant? Bridget 

Christie knows. She has written and performed numerous 

critically acclaimed consecutive solo Edinburgh 

shows, which have been comedy picks in The Metro, 

Independent, The Guardian, The Times, The Stage, The 

List, Scotsman, The Skinny, and The Sunday Times. 

Bridget was a finalist in Funny Women 2004, nominated

First Films 2012 

“Creative”, “inspiring” and “exceptional” have 

been words used to describe the young talented 

filmmakers in Newport. First Films awards and 

screenings were created in 2007 to recognise the 

creativity and hard work of young filmmakers in 

Newport and the surrounding areas. Founded by 

Newport Arts Development to encourage young 

people into filmmaking, the event showcases films 

made by young people with a weeklong celebration 

of film, workshops and live events. 

Now in its 6th year, this year’s awards ceremony 

will reward and honour the young filmmakers of 

Newport and beyond with an evening of diverse, 

crafted and inspirational films.

Andy Fairweather Low’s pedigree is the stuff rock 

dreams are made of. He first came to prominence 

at the vanguard of the new youthful expression of 

music as the lead singer in Amen Corner. The 60s

‘Cornucopia’ - David Pyatt 

This ‘Cornucopia’ or ‘Horn of Plenty’ concert 

experience places the soloist and horn at the very 

heart of the programme. Sinfonia Cymru welcomes 

Britain’s foremost Horn player, David Pyatt, in a 

programme celebrating the instrument in all its 

thrilling and tuneful boisterousness. The orchestra 

is delighted to welcome David to this first series of 

Sinfonia Cymru’s 2012/13 concert season. David is 

currently principal horn of the London Symphony 

Orchestra, and achieved musical stardom as winner 

of the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year 

competition at the age of only 14. This concert

The UK’s largest Youth Drama Festival, the

An old man is comatose and near death...the play 

of The Tempest is his last living second, a time in

‘brave new world’ of love and reconciliation.

Chekhov’s classic tragicomedy of thwarted desire 

and wasted existence is produced and performed 

by students from Newport University’s Performing 

Arts course. Through using sound and image 

this production will create a counterpoint to the 

naturalist orthodoxy of Chekhovian dramatic 

conventions to expose the hard, cruel world the 

characters inhabit, haunted by the past and terrified

One of the jewels in the city’s cultural crown, 

Newport Cathedral Choir returns to The Riverfront 

to give its eagerly awaited Family Carol Concert. 

Since last year the choir has sung in Christ Church 

Cathedral Oxford and Westminster Abbey, as well as 

giving concerts in Newport Cathedral and outreach 

concerts in Rhymney and Llantilio Crossenny. It has 

also been heard twice on BBC Radio Wales. 

Senior Chorister Oliver sang at H.M. The Queen’s 

Diamond Jubilee Service at St Paul’s Cathedral 

as a member of the forty strong Diamond Choir, 

recruited from children aged 8-13 from all over 

the United Kingdom. Oliver was the only boy from 

Wales to sing in the choir. Choral Scholar Harvey 

was a member of Only Boys Aloud, who memorably 

came third in Britain’s Got Talent! 

Once again the choir will delight us with music 

old and new to celebrate the Christmas season, 

and as usual there will be the chance for all the 

audience to raise the roof, joining the choir in well 

known carols.

If Wild Man Blues was a snapshot, Woody Allen: A Documentary 

is a photo album. From his early days in Brooklyn via stand-up 

comedy to his 47 years making movies, “America’s foremost 

humorist” (as first wife Louise Lasser dubs him) gets a thorough 

going-over from Curb Your Enthusiasm director Robert B. 

Weide. Illustrated with clips and talking heads aplenty (not 

least Allen’s), A Documentary starts enthusiastically. Running 

through those “early funny ones”, the Oscar-winning Annie 

Hall and critical darling Manhattan, the film is, accordingly, a 

joy to watch. While early collaborators Tony Roberts and Diane 

Keaton make appearances, ’80s muse/partner Mia Farrow is 

unsurprisingly absent.

the mad King Christian VII, but soon enters a passionate affair 

with his physician Johann Friedrich Struensee and they together 

engineer a coup. The film stretches credibility and historical fact in 

suggesting Queen Caroline Mathilda was the driving force behind 

the enlightened reforms of the short-lived “Struensee era”.

Jo Haycock 

Newport Art College 

In 2003 Jo Haycock joined a BBC Radio Wales crew 

who were recording a programme Art College 

Days about the derelict listed building that was 

Newport Art College. It was classed as something 

as a cultural Mecca in its heyday – where Magnum 

photographer, David Hurn founded the world class 

Documentary Photography course back in the 

1970’s. She went with Hurn and fellow lecturers, 

along with the crew as they walked over broken 

glass and discarded film reels recording their stories 

and anecdotes of time spent there. The photos 

Jo took that day of the building itself capture the 

majestic neglect, ghostly corridors, vandalism and 

living quarters of squatters back then.

Newport Photographic Club 

(formerly Newport Camera Club) 

In March 1891, the Star of Gwent reported the 

launch of Newport Camera Club. The club’s 

main aim since then has been the promotion of 

photography. They extend a friendly welcome to 

new members to share in a programme of lectures, 

workshops and competitions, designed to develop 

expertise and achieve excellence in their chosen 

hobby. This exhibition showcases the work of 

members of all abilities.

Gallery, the Art Gallery on the ground floor and the Upper Mezzanine on the first floor 

foyer overlooking the River Usk.

Video Drama Installation 

The legend, as told by Ovid, is that Echo loves 

Narcissus but is unable to express that love 

because she does not have a voice of her own, and 

Narcissus is unable to hear and respond to her call, 

because he is trapped within self love, and his own 

image. Echo is all sound – only her “echo” remains 

after her death – and Narcissus is all image. This 

multi-screen video installation will enable you to 

choose their future and ours…

How to Find us 

Situated opposite the main bus 

station, a 10 minute walk from the 

Newport train station and a five 

minute stroll from the city centre, 

The Riverfront is easily accessible by 

foot, car, coach and train. For more 

information on public transport 

just call Traveline Cymru on 0870 

608 2608 or check out their website 

www.traveline.org.uk 

You can drop off and pick up 

immediately outside the entrance 

by coming up to the barriers at the 

castle end of the building, press the 

buzzer and you will be let in. Drop 

off as many passengers you want 

before driving through to the next 

barrier (which automatically opens 

as you approach it). 

Parking 

There is a small Pay and Display car 

park just past The Riverfront on the 

riverside which is free after 6.30pm. 

The next closest car park is the 

Kingsway Centre, you need to drive 

back out onto Kingsway (main road) 

and go past the Newport Centre on 

your right and then take the next 

turning on the right, which leads 

around the bend and the approach 

to the car park. It is open from 8am 

to midnight every day. It is a 

short flat five minute walk from 

the car park to the venue.

dde ac wedyn cymryd y tro nesaf ar 

y dde, sy’n arwain rownd y tro ac at y 

ffordd i’r maes parcio. Mae’n agored o 

wyth o’r gloch y bore tan hanner nos 

bob dydd. Mae’n waith cerdded byr, 

gwastad, pum munud o’r
