Welcome to the Hill
In the 1840s, the Universalist Church wanted to open a college
in New England. Boston businessman Charles Tufts gave the
church a gift of 20 acres of land on the condition it be used for
establishing a college. With that, the location was decided. Tufts’
land was located on one of the highest hills in the Boston area,
Walnut Hill, straddling Medford and Somerville.
As local lore has it, when a relative asked
Charles Tufts what he would do with his
land, and more specifically with “that
bleak hill over in Medford,” Tufts
replied, “I will put a light on it.” In
1855, a toast to the new Tufts College
was offered in Faneuil Hall. Hosea
Ballou II, the college’s first president,
remarked, “For if Tufts College is to
be a source of illumination, as a
beacon standing on a hill, where its
light cannot be hidden, its influence
will naturally work like all light; it
will be diffusive.”
In a physical representation of Charles
Tufts and Hosea Ballou II’s hopes for the
college, all incoming students participate
in a candlelighting ceremony on the
President’s lawn. This ceremony takes place
twice during their time at Tufts—during Orientation
and before graduation. The experience symbolizes the sharing of
knowledge that each student will take part in during their time
at Tufts University and within their own communities.

WELCOME CLASS OF 2016 AND TRANSFER STUDENTS!
Tufts Undergraduate Orientation is a week designed to show you what Tufts has to offer.
This week marks the beginning of an important journey you will never forget. On this hill
you will find professors who will inspire you, build friendships that will stay with you
forever, and create memories to treasure for life. The Tufts experience is about growing as
an individual and as a member of the larger campus community. During Orientation, you will
learn some of the University’s most important lessons and traditions. First and foremost,
however, this week is about connections. Take the time to connect with your peers, your
advisors, and with your University. Some of the bonds that begin here are sure to last
throughout your time at Tufts and even long after. Welcome to the Hill!
During Orientation you will . . .
• learn what Tufts University has to offer;
• meet with Orientation Leaders who will introduce you to university resources and
answer your questions;
• form friendships with your peers and learn more about yourself in the process;
• collaborate with your academic advisor to assess your academic skills and prepare
for the responsibility of making choices about your education;
• meet with faculty and staff members and explore the breadth of your educational
opportunities;
• learn about the many co-curricular activities offered by Tufts’ student organizations
and athletics programs.
This calendar lists all events and activities happening during Orientation week. Please take
some time to review the calendar and make notes on the events you will be attending.
While all programs are important, many of the programs are mandatory. All mandatory
programs are highlighted with a SHADOW BOX. Many programs are repeated and assigned
by your orientation group. Descriptions of all programs are listed in the glossary at the end.
Orientation reflects what your life at Tufts will be:
Intellectually stimulating and rich in experience.
Have a great week!
Math 50 is an applications-oriented second semester calculus course for
those who have had a first semester of calculus, but have not been able
to obtain AP credit for it. After taking Math 50, you will be able to enter
Calculus III. (Engineering will not require students who complete Math
50 to go back to Calculus I.) The purpose of the placement exam is to
see whether your familiarity with the basics of calculus suffices to skip
Math 11 and go directly into Math 50.
Academic Essentials
Meet your Academic Dean who will discuss ideas to keep in mind as you plan your first semester
program, including graduation requirements. You will hear about study abroad options, the Academic
Resource Center, and the online registration process.
Academic Integrity Workshop
All entering students must attend one of the workshops offered. When does helping a friend with a
homework assignment, lab project, or paper cross the line from collaborative learning to cheating? Join
an interactive discussion, led by Tufts Writing Fellows, on the ethical dilemmas college students face
and the strict standards of academic honesty in place at Tufts. If your appointment with your advisor is
at the time your group is assigned to attend, meet with your advisor and attend a different session.
Art Gallery
The Tufts University Art Gallery is located in the Aidekman Arts Center at 40 Talbot Avenue. Please
make sure you stop by for a visit during Orientation or once the year begins when they will have several
events and exhibits. The Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and
Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Information can be found at artgallery.tufts.edu. The Art Gallery
will be hosting an Open House First Year Breakfast on September 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Please
stop by for a visit.
Bingo Night
Come play Bingo in Dewick for a chance to win some Jumbo Swag!
Catholic Chaplaincy at Tufts Welcome Barbecue
Welcome incoming students to the Catholic Community and the Catholic Chaplaincy at Tufts! You are
invited to join us for a barbecue at the Interfaith Center, 58 Winthrop Street.
your graduation.
Comedy Club
video clip. Wear loose clothing for a short stretch session for all levels. You will be able to check your
dance level and to ask individual questions afterwards.
Discover Davis
