PRAGUE
A THEATRE FULL
OF WONDER
Language is no barrier at the Laterna
Magika theatre – it has captivated
visitors to Prague for over 50 years
REVOLUTIONARY IN CONCEPT,
striking in appearance and radical in
its history, Prague’s Magic Lantern
is no ordinary theatre. Enter the stunning
glass-fronted modernist building for a
glimpse of the silent performances that
have captivated audiences and made a
groundbreaking contribution to the visual
arts. This winter, its new productions are all
set to dazzle, including the sell-out show
The Legends of Magic Prague.
When television was still black-andwhite,
the Laterna Magika was the
original pioneer of new media, providing
parallel projections onto several screens
as cinematic backgrounds to mime artists
and ballet movement. Fifty years on,
the Laterna Magika uses the very latest
lighting techniques. Movable screens
change the sets and transport the
projections around the stage, providing
a foreigner-friendly show of contemporary
dance, artistic movement, mime, gesture
and black comedy to packed houses.
Here, the impenetrability of the Czech
language to foreigners is no obstacle to an
evening of imaginative entertainment.
As the Lantern’s Zdenek Prokes puts it,
“We continue to search for productions
using new projection techniques
