We’ve cleaned our closets again and on Saturday,
March 13 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm we will be selling
items like:

~ Office supplies ~ Furniture
~ Lawn mover
PLUS, over 100 items on our “drawing” table.
Bring a donation of canned cat food, strained meat
baby food or paper towels and reap the benefits of our
spring cleaning!
Refreshments will be served.

Crookjaw
Our veterinary technician, Peggy Lyon, has a real
flair for naming cats. A little black & white kitten
came to us last year after she had been trapped in
a feral cat colony. Her left cheekbone and left lower
jaw were broken and had healed crookedly. As her
body tried to heal itself it formed adhesions between
the cheek and lower jaw which froze her jaw nearly
shut – she could only open her mouth 1/2 inch and
was having difficulty eating. It was necessary for this
little girl, now named “Crookjaw” (for obvious reasons),
to have surgery to remove the adhesions. Peggy
took care of her afterwards so she could do the daily
jaw exercises to prevent the adhesions from forming
again. Crookjaw recovered nicely and has since been
adopted into a home with her feline buddy Skylar.
Crookjaw is just one of many cats and kittens each
year that have needed more than routine medical care. It
is only because of your generosity that we are able to
provide this additional veterinary care. Thank you all for
your love of cats and showing it through your support of
the work we do!

Veterinary Clinic Update –
Donor “Bricks”
Last year at this time we started a “New Clinic
Fund” to raise money to build an on-site veterinary
clinic in the lower level of the shelter. With that
announcement, we raised more than $6,000. Then,
because of your generous response to our “Cats Rule”
flyer promoting a challenge grant from The Lauretta
Boyd Charitable Trust (matching clinic-designated
donations dollar-for-dollar up to $15,000) the balance
of the New Clinic Fund approached $50,000. A
$10,000 grant from the Animal Assistance Foundation
increases that to nearly $60,000. Discussions with the
architect will begin soon.
During the capital campaign for our new facility
we accepted donations for brick inscriptions. More
than 600 personalized bricks welcome visitors on the
walkway to the shelter. Many people have asked if we
will be doing this again. We are now offering clinics
donors two options. We will have four glass panels
installed on a wall inside the shelter – each panel will
be divided into 28 spaces (4” x 9”) or “bricks.” Each
brick will hold two lines with 20 characters each. On
three of the panels you can have your personalized
engraving with a donation of $250 for the Clinic Fund.
On the fourth panel the inscriptions will be painted in
gold and these are available for a donation of $500.
We will be able to have each panel engraved once
we have received donations to complete the 28
spaces. With space for only 112 bricks, we anticipate
these will go quickly. Please call the shelter at

MEET PENGUIN AND SEAL

We have known Penguin and Seal since June
1993 when they first entered the shelter at
8 months of age. Penguin is a patch tabby with white
and Seal is a blue-cream tortoiseshell. They were
born with additional toes on their back paws and
deformed front legs. They have been adopted and
returned 3 times due to chronic litter box problems.
The probability of them not using the litter box consistently
in another home is very high, so we have
decided that they will remain in the shelter until their
health fails. They love to be held and will purr up a
storm, so when you visit the shelter, be sure to spend
some time with them.
We’ve decided to make these girls earn their
keep. Penguin and Seal will be debuting a new column
in the next Cat Care Quarterly titled “ASK
PENGUIN AND SEAL.” They will answer any questions
you may have regarding cat behavior, litter
box issues, general health issues or any other catrelated
questions. They have a team of experts lined
up to help them. One or two letters will be
answered in each newsletter and Penguin and Seal’s
assistants will make sure that every letter is
answered purrsonally.

Sponsor A Cat
You can sponsor an individual cat at the shelter,
or become a shelter sponsor, for a monthly
donation of $20.00. Individual CAT sponsors
will receive a photograph and profile of “their”
cat. SHELTER sponsors receive a photograph
and story of a special cat in the shelter three
times a year. For more information call Gene

Thank You Wanda
Since Cat Care Society’s inception in 1981 Wanda
Depperschmidt has been a volunteer. She has done
our grocery shopping, fostered kittens, recycled aluminum
cans, organized fundraising events (book sale,
plant sale, garage sales, fudge sales, etc.) and for the
past nine years has managed our thrift shop, Cajun’s
Closet. Wanda retired as a registered nurse in 1994
and in 1995 she took on the responsibility of Cajun’s
on a volunteer basis. When Wanda decided to retire –
again – to Kansas, we weren’t sure how we were
going to replace her. Well, needless to say it has taken
SEVERAL people to fill her shoes. In December
Wanda left for the Land of Oz and although I’m sure
she must be tired, she is anything but retired! This is
one busy woman who will never suffer from boredom.
We want to publicly thank Wanda for giving more
than 17,000 volunteer hours, and that’s just since we
started keeping track of them in 1991!
We would also like to welcome Terry Richmeier
who has bravely stepped into the manager’s position
at Cajun’s Closet and is doing a great job. The next
time you’re at the Closet, please welcome Terry to
our team!

Non-Cash Giving Options
After the hectic holidays everybody is a little
weary and our pocket books are a lot thinner. So,
we would like to provide you with some ways to help
cats that don’t involve cash.
Cars for Charity
If you have a vehicle you would like to donate to
help the cats in residence at Cat Care Society give us
a call at 303-239-9680 and we’ll send you an information
packet. We work with Cars for Charity, a
nonprofit arm of Klode Salvage and they will tow
your car, process the title, auction the vehicle, and
forward the net profit to us. We have received over
$30,000 from donated vehicles since 1999.
Recycle Aluminum Cans
This past year we received nearly $1,000 from
aluminum can recycling thanks to those who donated
cans and Jim Carlson, our recycling volunteer who
cashes in the cans. Some of our supporters collect
aluminum cans where they work.
Donate Your Old Cell Phone
There are a few guidelines for this donation
program: (1) Only wireless (cellular or PCS) handcarried
phones, (2) vehicle-installed telephones,
two-way radios, pagers, walkie-talkies, etc., do not
qualify, and (3) please disconnect all service. Each
cell phone will bring $1-$15 and we’ve sent in our
first shipment of over 40 phones thanks to volunteer
Deb Hokanson.
Unwanted Cat Furniture
Did you buy your cats an expensive cat condo,
bed, or other accessory that they haven’t even gone
near? We have a great market for cat furniture at the
shelter. Even if your cat HAS used the furniture, we
can clean it up and resell it.
Thrift Shop Donations
From February 1995 through June 2003 Cajun’s
Closet thrift shop has NETTED nearly $180,000 for the
cats. That’s an average of over $21,000 per year and the
shop is only open three days a week. Thank you for
your ongoing charitable donations that have made the
thrift shop a successful fundraiser for the cats. We can
especially use donations of children’s clothing, men’s
clothing, and women’s clothing sizes 12+.
Recycle Ink Jet & Laser Cartridges
Save your empty ink jet and laser cartridges and
bring them to Cat Care Society to be recycled and
re-used. We will receive up to $4 for each ink jet and
$1- $12 for each laser cartridge and it’s good for the
environment, too. So ask your friends, relatives, and
neighbors to save their empties to be recycled. Thanks!

letter (A = Associate, G = General, S = Sustaining, P
