Anticipation is building with our Fair Board and volunteers planning the 2011, 173rd
edition of the Merrickville Fair, continuing our proud tradition of gathering together to
celebrate agriculture in our community. This year also serves as the springboard preparation
for the celebration of our 175th anniversary in 2013, which will be a banner year.
For 2011 a full program awaits. We have a new midway this year and an entertainment
lineup which features a variety of musical styles aiming to please everyone. Lots of “fun
stuff” has been planned for the children and a full slate of displays, demonstrations, horse
and cattle shows, home craft exhibits on all three days awaits young and old.

General Rules & Regulations
1. The annual fee for membership in the Merrickville Agricultural Society (MAS) is $5.00. When
prize money amounts to $10.00 or more, the following year’s membership dues will be deducted.
2. Adult members and Juniors exhibiting in Adult Classes must pay the $5.00 annual membership
fee in order to compete. A membership is not required for Juniors exhibiting.
3. Entries are accepted on M.A.S. forms only. One form per exhibitor.
4. The Directors will do their utmost to procure the most competent judges in each of the classes.
If an exhibitor is dissatisfied with any decision of such judges, they must immediately enter a
written protest with the Secretary/Treasurer against such decision. The Directors shall inquire
into the written protest at once and their decision shall be final.
5. No persons shall act as judge in any class in which they are exhibiting.
6. No persons will be allowed to interfere with the judges while judging is in progress.
7. A lone entry in a class/section need not necessarily be awarded a prize.
8. Livestock and all articles for competition must be entered in the name of the owner unless otherwise
stated in the prize list. Failure to observe this rule will result in either forfeiture of an awarded
prize or in no prize being awarded at all.
9. All persons obtaining prizes fraudulently shall forfeit all goods or monies awarded.
10. Adult prizes will be awarded at any time after the close of the fair (usually within two months). If
receipts are insufficient to meet the prize list in full, the prizes will be paid pro rata as funds permit.
11. Children’s prizes, where possible, are awarded at the conclusion of the fair on Sunday.
12. All cheques must be cashed no later than December 31 of the current year, after which they
become the property of the M.A.S.
13. All exhibitors are expected to conform to safety standards while on the grounds and may be asked
to leave if endangering the safety and well-being of any person or livestock.

CHILD’S HORSE AND PONY GUIDELINES
Entries made day of the show will be charged an extra fee of $10 per horse for the day. There is no
charge for Ring Numbers but they must be returned at end of show.
Entry fees: $2 per class.
Warm-up: $2/round
Warm-up over fences: $2/round (one round only)
Warm-up from 7:00 am - 8:00 am (not judged)
Please include the following with your entries:
1. MAS membership fee per exhibitor $5 or $10 for family.
2. Proof of liability insurance on horses
PRIZE MONEY: 1 st - $7, 2 nd - $6, 3 rd - $5, 4 th - $4, 5 th - $3, 6 th - $2.
NOTE:
Group “A” for children 12 - 18 years.
Group “B” - 11 years & under.
WALK & TROT classes [10 & under] and Novice [11 & over] are for young riders who do not
canter or lope.
Lead Line children [8 & under] walk only.
All exhibitors must stay in their own group and may not enter other classes except Showmanship,
Tack & Turnout and Costume.
Warm-up over fences: One round only [not to be judged] from 7:00 am till 8:00 am only. Show
starts at 8:00 am sharp.
Mounted Tack & Turnout: cleanliness and neatness to be judged. Horses/Ponies should be under
control at all times and never left unattended. They should be clean, well cared for & equipment

should fit well. Riders must wear shoes or boots with a good heel. Hard hat with chinstrap is
mandatory in jumping classes.

HORSE PULLING RULES - 27’ 6” DISTANCE PULL - BUCKEYE SLED
1 . Two pulls must be completed to qualify for prize money. Current Coggins and insurance papers
must be presented. To help offset drug testing costs there will be a $10.00 fee per team to pull.
2. There shall be no alcoholic beverages used by teamsters, helpers or officials.
3. All teams must be weighed the day of the pull with a halter and loose shank.
4. Light Class - 3500 lbs and under. Scales will open 1 1/2 hours before pull begins and close 30
minutes before pull. BOTH CLASSES PULL TOGETHER.
5. LENGTH OF DRAW IS 27 FEET 6 INCHES. LONGEST DRAW COUNTS, 2 ATTEMPTS.
A total of 2 1/2 minutes will be allowed to complete each draw. BUCKEYE PULLING SLED to
be used when possible. Pulling sled to be drawn in both directions for two rounds and then only
one direction for remainder of pull. On the second hitch, teamsters have the option of taking
immediately following the first hitch, where the boat is sitting. If he/she passes and takes the
second hitch at the end of the round then the boat can be spotted anywhere on the track as long
as there is sufficient side lines left. The pulling sled to be centered between the two side lines. To
be eligible for a second hitch a reasonable attempt must be made on first hitch. Side lines must
be 18 feet apart.
6. A teamster is allowed two helpers. Teamsters and helpers must remain behind the double tree
while the horses are pulling. After completing the first pull, no change in teamster will be allowed,
except in the case of injury.
7. A break in harness - the teamster will decide if he keeps the distance or will start over.
8. A run-away team or team out of control will automatically be eliminated and drug tested at
teamsters expense.
9. A pull will be disqualified.
a) if horses step on or over lines or markers
b) if horses are beaten, lines are swung, foul language used
c) if helpers interfere in any way after horses are hitched
d) if teamsters or helpers head the horses while pulling or hitching

10. Three circles passing in front of the boat or anything over a twelve inch chuck will be classified
as one pull.
11. Any teamster or helper will automatically be ejected from the contest with all winnings forfeited
if he argues with the judge, fairboard, pulling committee or other contestants.
12. NO CHANGING OF BRIDLES DURING THE PULL.
13. DRUG TESTING TO BE ENFORCED:
a) No drugs allowed
b) No team or teamster allowed to pull while under suspension with any other
organization
c) If drugs are found, you will forfeit prize money and placing
d) Additional penalty as fair board concerned, feel appropriate.

GENERAL HALL RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. Only one entry per section is allowed by an exhibitor.
2. All articles must be the work of the exhibitor and can be exhibited no more than two years at this
fair. Soiled and worn articles will not be accepted for judging.
3. All agricultural or horticultural produce entered for competition must actually be raised or grown
by the exhibitor. Any persons exhibiting in Classes Grains or Vegetables must live within a 75
km radius of Merrickville.
4. The exhibition building will be open from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Thursday August 11th, and from
7:30 am to 8:45 am Friday August 12th for receiving of articles to be judged. Doors will be
closed to the public at 8:50 am Friday.
5. At 9:00 am Friday August 12th judging will commence on exhibits. No persons other than the
managers and judges will be allowed in the hall until judging is complete.
6. After judging has begun no more entries shall be received and no entries can be moved to other
sections. No Fair Director has the power to authorize the Secretary/Treasurer to mark or change
any entry form or tag.
7. The Directors will take every precaution to ensure the safety of the articles exhibited during the
time that the Fair is in progress. It must be understood that the owner accepts all risk in entering
any article and if any article is accidentally damaged, lost or stolen, the MAS and its Directors
will not make any payment for the value thereof.
8. Items selected for exhibit beyond Merrickville Fair, at the District or Provincial level are exhibited
at the owner’s risk and MAS takes no responsibility for loss or damage of these articles.
9. Hall exhibits can only be removed from the building on Sunday August 14th, 2011 between
3:00pm and 4:00 pm. The Directors do not take responsibility for items left after that time.

• Every junior member handing in an Exhibitors form will be eligible for a Draw Prize
• Draw ticket must be filled out when registering

CLASS 26: OAAS CHAMPIONSHIP QUILT COMPETITION RULES
District and Ontario Quilt Competitions sponsored by the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies.
The handmade quilt from this section judged “Best of Show” may go on to District and Provincial
competitions. (If the quilt wins first place at more than one fair, the quilt judged second may also enter
the District competition). District prizes awarded: $25, $15, and $10. Only the first-place quilt at the
District Competition is eligible to enter the Championship Quilt competition at the Annual Convention
in Toronto. The annual winning entry will be declared the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies
Championship Quilt, with a $500. Grand Prize, certificate and ribbon awarded. The exhibitor retains
ownership of the quilt.
Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies - Annual Machine Championship Quilt Competition
Eligibility, Rules and Regulations, General Conditions:
A. Entries must be solely made and machine quilted by the exhibitor, and exhibited and judged at a
local Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS) Fair to be eligible for this competition.
B. Entry quilts must be minimum of 72” X 90” (smaller quilts will not be eligible to proceed to the
next levels of competition).
C. Judging will occur at local fairs and district levels. A Provincial Grand Champion Machine Quilt
will be selected at the annual convention of OAAS.
D. Upon making entry into the OAAS Machine Quilt Competition, the Exhibitor agrees to participate
in any promotional activities related to the competition.
E. The winning OAAS Champion Machine Quilt will not be eligible to compete in future District and
or Convention OAAS competitions.
F. The winner’s name will be displayed at the Fair on a sign provided by OAAS.
G. The quilt must not be quilted using a long arm machine and must be machine quilted by the exhibitor.
