Dr Ramos is the author and coauthor of over 70 book chapters, and nearly 200 publications and a reviewer of several international and Spanish journals on paediatrics and infectious diseases. Dr Ramos is also a member of the PENTA Steering Committee (Paediatric European Network for the Treatment of AIDS) and a member of the Spanish Advisory Committee of Plan Nacional del SIDA (Ministry of Health). Jane Anderson is Director of the Centre for the Study of Sexual Health at Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Working in East London, her clinical practice and research interests focus on HIV in ethnic minority and migrant populations in the UK, with a special interest in the care of women with HIV. Professor Anderson is a member of the Executive Committee, Treatment Guidelines and Conference Subcommittees of the British HIV Association. David Asboe is a Consultant in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. His research interests include the sexual health of HIV-positive individuals and antiretroviral resistance. Dr Asboe is deputy convenor of the Diploma HIV Med exam and serves on the executive of the British HIV Association. Joanna Begent has trained in paediatrics in hospitals around London, including several years of oncology at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She is now a Consultant in Adolescent Medicine at UCLH in the largest dedicated adolescent unit in the country. She has a special interest in young people with medically unexplained symptoms. Dr Begent is particularly involved in the child-safeguarding aspects of this challenging group of patients. Yves Benhamou is Associate Professor of Hepatology in the Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, France. He has been the principal investigator for numerous clinical trials related to the management and the treatment of hepatitis C and B in persons with and without HIV co-infection. He organised and chaired the First European Consensus Conference on the Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis B and C in HIV-Infected Patients held in Paris in 2005. Dr Benhamou has authored or co-authored more than 300 peerreviewed articles and is currently involved in a number of clinical trials, including research into viral hepatitis. Mark Bower is a Medical Oncologist at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and Professor at Imperial College who specialises in the treatment of AIDS-related malignancies. He has developed probably the largest centre for the management of these tumours in Europe, receiving referrals from throughout the UK. Professor Bower remains active in clinical and laboratory research. Garry Brough co-founded the Bloomsbury Patients Network in 1999 and was the clinic’s first paid Patient Representative. He managed the YMCA Positive Health Programme, developing their national HIV & Exercise training, before moving to THT as an HIV Health Trainer, where he is currently Membership & Involvement Officer. Community involvement includes the BHIVA Guidelines Subcommittee, HIV Consortium PPE Subgroup and Community Rapporteur, and workshop facilitator at the Vienna 2010 AIDS Conference. Jacqueline Capeau is Professor in Cell Biology and Biochemistry at the Pierre and Marie Curie Faculty of Medicine, Paris. She is the head of the Biochemistry Department at the Tenon Hospital and of the Saint-Antoine Research Centre. She is involved in studies on genetic and acquired lipodystrophies, including lipodystrophies in HIV-infected patients, on hepatic alterations linked to insulin resistance, and on premature aging observed in HIV-infected patients. Myron S Cohen is J. Herbert Bate Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology and Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He serves as the Director of the UNC Division of Infectious Disease and the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Disease, and serves on the Leadership Groups of the NIH Center for HIV Vaccine Immunology (CHAVI) and the NIH HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN). Dr Cohen’s research work focuses on the transmission and prevention of transmission of HIV and much of his research has been conducted in the African country of Malawi and in the People’s Republic of China. Ross Cranston is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Disease at the University of Pittsburgh. He is director of the Anal Dysplasia Clinic and Research Program, Medical Director of the Pitt Men’s Study (Pittsburgh site of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort), and an Investigator in the Microbicide Trials Network. Hilary Curtis trained as a scientist and has worked in HIV/AIDS since the 1980s. She co-ordinates BHIVA's National Clinical Audit Programme alongside other projects as an independent consultant in health and health-related policy issues. Harry Dalton is Consultant Gastroenterologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer, Royal Cornwall Hospital and Peninsula Medical School. He was Dame Sheila Sherlock Travelling Fellow 2009. He has published 25 recent research papers on the emergence of hepatitis E virus in developing countries as a porcine zoonosis and a public health issue. Stephane De Wit is Senior Physician and Deputy Director at the AIDS Reference Centre of St Pierre Hospital, Brussels. He is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the Brussels University and coordinator of the Brussels HIV Saint Pierre Cohort. He has been involved in AIDS research for the last 27 years and is (co-)author of 120 articles, 250 communications and 11 book chapters. Q U E E N E L I Z A B E T H I I C O N F E R E N C E C E N T R E B I O G R A P H I E S Sheila Donaghy is a Nurse Consultant in Paediatric HIV and has worked at St George’s in London for the last 15 years. She works with children and young people with HIV and helps to run a range of clinics including family HIV clinics, transition clinics and mother and baby clinics for the care of mothers with HIV and their babies. Dr Donaghy is interested in work on adherence to anti-retroviral medication in children and young people and in disclosure of diagnosis to children. Maria Dowie has worked within the field of paediatric HIV for the previous 13 years. The majority of this time was spent working in South East London prior to her current position as Paediatric HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist in Leeds. She has a particular interest in adolescents and has recently established a support group for young people within West Yorkshire. Sarah Fidler completed her general adult medical training with CCST in HIV and GUM in 2003. Her main area of experience has been in developing a new clinical service and research resource for the transitional care of young people with perinatally acquired HIV infection and management of long-standing end-stage HIV disease. There are now over 60 young people regularly attending this service which has formed a basis upon which to undertake relevant clinical research. In addition she has worked in HIV research focused on adult participants since 1998 following a PhD in HIV Immunology. Her main areas of research interest have been running clinical research trials looking at immunological correlates of apparent protection from HIV acquisition amongst HIV-serodiscordant couples as well as studies of the strategic use of ART in individuals with acute HIV infection. This work has led to the International RCT-SPARTAC Trial which is due to report in 2011. Martin Fisher is a Consultant in HIV/GUM at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. He is responsible for the outpatient and inpatient management of a large cohort of HIV-infected individuals, and leads an active research team. He is currently an Executive Committee member of the British HIV Association, a member of the HIV Special Interest Group of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV, and is the Convenor of the national Diploma in HIV Medicine. He was co-chair of the 2008 UK HIV Testing guidelines, as well as being a member of numerous other guidelines committees. His main clinical and research interests are in antiretroviral therapy, primary HIV infection, strategies to improve the diagnosis of HIV infection, HIV and hepatitis co-infection, and the interplay between HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Caroline Foster is a Consultant in Paediatric/Adolescent Infectious Diseases and HIV at Imperial College Healthcare NHS trust, with an interest in the transitional care and long-term follow-up of young adults with perinatally acquired HIV infection. She is the current Chair of HYPNET (www.hypnet.org.uk). Graham Frize is a clinical psychologist who has been working with people with HIV as a clinician, researcher and trainer for the last 18 years in London, Sydney and Bangkok. More recently, he has developed a special interest in adolescent mental health and been actively involved with St Mary’s Hospital’s multidisciplinary care team for young people with HIV (900 clinic). Kate Gandhi has been a hospital pharmacist for 20 years, having worked in the UK and New Zealand. She is currently the pharmacist member of the award-winning Midlands Paediatric HIV Team based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital where she specialises in medication adherence. She also contributes to the care of HIV-positive pregnant women and patients in the adult clinic and is a registered independent prescriber. Phil Harrison qualified MBBS from St George’s Hospital Medical School in 1984. He trained in Hepatology at King’s College Hospital, London and was awarded MD by the University of London in 1992 for research investigating the effect of N-acetylcysteine in acute liver failure. Subsequently, he studied for a PhD as an MRC Training Fellow in Molecular and Cell Biology in the Department of Molecular Medicine at King’s College London. In 1994 he was appointed as Senior Lecturer at King’s College London and Consultant Hepatologist at King’s College Hospital. He has a clinical interest in viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma and his research is focused on immunotherapy for viral hepatitis. Bruce Hendry is Professor of Renal Medicine at King’s College London. He graduated in medicine from the University of Oxford and received his PhD in biophysics from the University of Cambridge. He is Academic Vice-President of the UK Renal Association. His major research interests are in the cell and molecular biology of progressive renal fibrosis. Professor Hendry also leads a clinical research programme and has particular interests in the renal complications of HIV disease. Ali Judd is a Senior Epidemiologist at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit, London. She coordinates the Collaborative HIV Paediatric Study (CHIPS) and takes a lead role in the European Pregnancy and Paediatric HIV Cohort Collaboration (EPPICC). She is also involved in randomised trials run by PENTA. She was elected to the Executive Committee of CHIVA in 2009. Sebastian Lucas has studied the morbid anatomy of HIV/AIDS, in Africa and the UK, since the mid-1980s. His particular interest is in correlating clinical and imaging diagnoses in patients with the pathology and the treatment. Professor Lucas is ex-Chair of the BHIVA Education and Scientific Subcommittee, and sits on the Conferences Subcommittee. He works in the Department of Histopathology at St Thomas’ Hospital, London.
