The registration fee gives access to the scientific sessions of the <strong>BHIVA</strong> Autumn Conference and the CHIVA<br />
Parallel Sessions, including satellite symposia. All refreshments and lunches throughout the conference are<br />
included in the registration fee.<br />
<strong>BHIVA</strong> Lunchtime Workshops<br />
There is no fee for attending these workshops if you are registered for the <strong>BHIVA</strong> Autumn Conference. Places<br />
are limited and have been allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and all applicants have been informed<br />
before conference whether or not their application has been successful.<br />
Third Annual <strong>BHIVA</strong> Conference for the Management of HIV/Hepatitis Co-infection:<br />
1300–1730 Wednesday 6 October 2010<br />
The registration fee gives access to the Third Annual <strong>BHIVA</strong> Conference for the Management of HIV/Hepatitis<br />
Co-infection on Wednesday afternoon at One Great George Street Conference Centre, prior to the <strong>BHIVA</strong><br />
Autumn Conference. Lunch and afternoon refreshments are included in the registration fee. Please note that<br />
places are limited to a maximum of 100 delegates and have been allocated, in principle, on a first-come,<br />
first-served basis. All applicants have been informed before conference whether or not their registration has<br />
been successful.<br />
Children’s HIV Association (CHIVA) Parallel Sessions: 1000–1835, Friday 8 October 2010<br />
The registration fee gives access to the CHIVA Parallel Sessions and the CHIVA Plenary Session. In addition,<br />
refreshments and lunch on Friday 8 October are included. The Parallel Sessions will be followed by the CHIVA<br />
Dinner at a central London location from 1845 for those who have booked tickets and paid the necessary fee.<br />
Drinks Reception<br />
The Drinks Reception immediately follows the conference programme at 1830–1930 on Thursday 7 October and will<br />
take place in the exhibition area located in the Benjamin Britten Lounge on the third floor.<br />
<strong>BHIVA</strong> Community Registration<br />
<strong>BHIVA</strong> has supported free registration for over 40 community representatives to attend the conference.<br />
<strong>BHIVA</strong> Registration Scholarships<br />
<strong>BHIVA</strong> Registration Scholarships have been made available to 20 delegates who are doctors and who are retired, not<br />
working or employed in a part-time or equivalent capacity, or who are students involved in full-time undergraduate or<br />
post-graduate work. The scholarships cover the conference registration fee.<br />
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)<br />

Medical staff in career-grade posts who are enrolled with one of the Royal Medical Colleges for Continuing Professional<br />
Development will be entitled to receive CPD credits. The conference (including the Third Annual <strong>BHIVA</strong> Conference for<br />
the Management of HIV/Hepatitis Co-infection) has been allocated 15 CPD credits over the three days and has been<br />
allocated the unique reference number 58786. The following parts of the conference have been allocated CPD<br />
accreditation as indicated below.<br />

Exhibition<br />
Exhibition represents an integral element of the Conference, providing participants with an excellent platform for<br />
networking as well as an opportunity to gain further insight into cutting-edge technology, the latest healthcare<br />
solutions, and services within the field of HIV and GU medicine. Entrance to the exhibition hall is free for all registered<br />
delegates.<br />
Venue and travel<br />
The conference venue is a short walk from<br />
Westminster or St James’s Park underground<br />
stations. Please see the map for the location of<br />
these stations in relation to the Queen Elizabeth II<br />
Conference Centre.<br />
Westminster and St James’s Park underground<br />
stations are easily accessible from King’s Cross,<br />
St Pancras (Eurostar) and Victoria main-line rail<br />
stations and can be accessed by the Jubilee line or<br />
the Circle and District lines. The journey from<br />
these main-line stations to Westminster or<br />
St James’s Park underground stations takes<br />
approximately 10 minutes and costs<br />
approximately £4.<br />
There are also good links to the city centre from<br />
both Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Journeys by<br />
either Heathrow or Gatwick Express take about<br />
1 hour.<br />

José Tomás Ramos Amador is a paediatric specialist and Chairman of Pediatrics at the University Hospital Getafe. Dr Ramos is the<br />
author and coauthor of over 70 book chapters, and nearly 200 publications and a reviewer of several international and Spanish journals<br />
on paediatrics and infectious diseases. Dr Ramos is also a member of the PENTA Steering Committee (Paediatric European Network for the<br />
Treatment of AIDS) and a member of the Spanish Advisory Committee of Plan Nacional del SIDA (Ministry of Health).<br />
Jane Anderson is Director of the Centre for the Study of Sexual Health at Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Working in<br />
East London, her clinical practice and research interests focus on HIV in ethnic minority and migrant populations in the UK, with a special<br />
interest in the care of women with HIV. Professor Anderson is a member of the Executive Committee, Treatment Guidelines and Conference<br />
Subcommittees of the British HIV Association.<br />
David Asboe is a Consultant in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. His research interests include<br />
the sexual health of HIV-positive individuals and antiretroviral resistance. Dr Asboe is deputy convenor of the Diploma HIV Med exam and<br />
serves on the executive of the British HIV Association.<br />
Joanna Begent has trained in paediatrics in hospitals around London, including several years of oncology at Great Ormond Street Hospital.<br />
She is now a Consultant in Adolescent Medicine at UCLH in the largest dedicated adolescent unit in the country. She has a special interest<br />
in young people with medically unexplained symptoms. Dr Begent is particularly involved in the child-safeguarding aspects of this challenging<br />
group of patients.<br />
Yves Benhamou is Associate Professor of Hepatology in the Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital<br />
in Paris, France. He has been the principal investigator for numerous clinical trials related to the management and the treatment of hepatitis<br />
C and B in persons with and without HIV co-infection. He organised and chaired the First European Consensus Conference on the Treatment<br />
of Chronic Hepatitis B and C in HIV-Infected Patients held in Paris in 2005. Dr Benhamou has authored or co-authored more than 300 peerreviewed<br />
articles and is currently involved in a number of clinical trials, including research into viral hepatitis.<br />
Mark Bower is a Medical Oncologist at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and Professor at Imperial College who specialises in the treatment<br />
of AIDS-related malignancies. He has developed probably the largest centre for the management of these tumours in Europe, receiving<br />
referrals from throughout the UK. Professor Bower remains active in clinical and laboratory research.<br />
Garry Brough co-founded the Bloomsbury Patients Network in 1999 and was the clinic’s first paid Patient Representative. He managed the<br />
YMCA Positive Health <strong>Programme</strong>, developing their national HIV & Exercise training, before moving to THT as an HIV Health Trainer, where<br />
he is currently Membership & Involvement Officer. Community involvement includes the <strong>BHIVA</strong> Guidelines Subcommittee, HIV Consortium<br />
PPE Subgroup and Community Rapporteur, and workshop facilitator at the Vienna 2010 AIDS Conference.<br />
Jacqueline Capeau is Professor in Cell Biology and Biochemistry at the Pierre and Marie Curie Faculty of Medicine, Paris. She is the head<br />
of the Biochemistry Department at the Tenon Hospital and of the Saint-Antoine Research Centre. She is involved in studies on genetic and<br />
acquired lipodystrophies, including lipodystrophies in HIV-infected patients, on hepatic alterations linked to insulin resistance, and on<br />
premature aging observed in HIV-infected patients.<br />
Myron S Cohen is J. Herbert Bate Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology and Public Health at the University<br />
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He serves as the Director of the UNC Division of Infectious Disease and the UNC Institute for Global Health<br />
and Infectious Disease, and serves on the Leadership Groups of the NIH Center for HIV Vaccine Immunology (CHAVI) and the NIH HIV<br />
Prevention Trials Network (HPTN). Dr Cohen’s research work focuses on the transmission and prevention of transmission of HIV and much<br />
of his research has been conducted in the African country of Malawi and in the People’s Republic of China.<br />
Ross Cranston is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Disease at the University of Pittsburgh. He is director of the Anal Dysplasia<br />
Clinic and Research Program, Medical Director of the Pitt Men’s Study (Pittsburgh site of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort), and an Investigator<br />
in the Microbicide Trials Network.<br />
Hilary Curtis trained as a scientist and has worked in HIV/AIDS since the 1980s. She co-ordinates <strong>BHIVA</strong>'s National Clinical Audit <strong>Programme</strong><br />
alongside other projects as an independent consultant in health and health-related policy issues.<br />
Harry Dalton is Consultant Gastroenterologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer, Royal Cornwall Hospital and Peninsula Medical School. He was<br />
Dame Sheila Sherlock Travelling Fellow 2009. He has published 25 recent research papers on the emergence of hepatitis E virus in developing<br />
countries as a porcine zoonosis and a public health issue.<br />
Stephane De Wit is Senior Physician and Deputy Director at the AIDS Reference Centre of St Pierre Hospital, Brussels. He is Associate<br />
Professor of Internal Medicine at the Brussels University and coordinator of the Brussels HIV Saint Pierre Cohort. He has been involved in<br />
AIDS research for the last 27 years and is (co-)author of 120 articles, 250 communications and 11 book chapters.<br />

Sheila Donaghy is a Nurse Consultant in Paediatric HIV and has worked at St George’s in London for the last 15 years. She works with<br />
children and young people with HIV and helps to run a range of clinics including family HIV clinics, transition clinics and mother and baby<br />
clinics for the care of mothers with HIV and their babies. Dr Donaghy is interested in work on adherence to anti-retroviral medication in<br />
children and young people and in disclosure of diagnosis to children.<br />
Maria Dowie has worked within the field of paediatric HIV for the previous 13 years. The majority of this time was spent working in South<br />
East London prior to her current position as Paediatric HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist in Leeds. She has a particular interest in adolescents and<br />
has recently established a support group for young people within West Yorkshire.<br />
Sarah Fidler completed her general adult medical training with CCST in HIV and GUM in 2003. Her main area of experience has been in<br />
developing a new clinical service and research resource for the transitional care of young people with perinatally acquired HIV infection and<br />
management of long-standing end-stage HIV disease. There are now over 60 young people regularly attending this service which has<br />
formed a basis upon which to undertake relevant clinical research. In addition she has worked in HIV research focused on adult participants<br />
since 1998 following a PhD in HIV Immunology. Her main areas of research interest have been running clinical research trials looking at<br />
immunological correlates of apparent protection from HIV acquisition amongst HIV-serodiscordant couples as well as studies of the strategic<br />
use of ART in individuals with acute HIV infection. This work has led to the International RCT-SPARTAC Trial which is due to report in 2011.<br />
Martin Fisher is a Consultant in HIV/GUM at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. He is responsible for the outpatient and<br />
inpatient management of a large cohort of HIV-infected individuals, and leads an active research team. He is currently an Executive<br />
Committee member of the British HIV Association, a member of the HIV Special Interest Group of the British Association for Sexual Health<br />
and HIV, and is the Convenor of the national Diploma in HIV Medicine. He was co-chair of the 2008 UK HIV Testing guidelines, as well as<br />
being a member of numerous other guidelines committees. His main clinical and research interests are in antiretroviral therapy, primary HIV<br />
infection, strategies to improve the diagnosis of HIV infection, HIV and hepatitis co-infection, and the interplay between HIV and other<br />
sexually transmitted infections.<br />
Caroline Foster is a Consultant in Paediatric/Adolescent Infectious Diseases and HIV at Imperial College Healthcare NHS trust, with an<br />
interest in the transitional care and long-term follow-up of young adults with perinatally acquired HIV infection. She is the current Chair of<br />
HYPNET (www.hypnet.org.uk).<br />
Graham Frize is a clinical psychologist who has been working with people with HIV as a clinician, researcher and trainer for the last 18 years<br />
in London, Sydney and Bangkok. More recently, he has developed a special interest in adolescent mental health and been actively involved<br />
with St Mary’s Hospital’s multidisciplinary care team for young people with HIV (900 clinic).<br />
Kate Gandhi has been a hospital pharmacist for 20 years, having worked in the UK and New Zealand. She is currently the pharmacist member<br />
of the award-winning Midlands Paediatric HIV Team based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital where she specialises in medication<br />
adherence. She also contributes to the care of HIV-positive pregnant women and patients in the adult clinic and is a registered independent<br />
prescriber.<br />
Phil Harrison qualified MBBS from St George’s Hospital Medical School in 1984. He trained in Hepatology at King’s College Hospital, London<br />
and was awarded MD by the University of London in 1992 for research investigating the effect of N-acetylcysteine in acute liver failure.<br />
Subsequently, he studied for a PhD as an MRC Training Fellow in Molecular and Cell Biology in the Department of Molecular Medicine at<br />
King’s College London. In 1994 he was appointed as Senior Lecturer at King’s College London and Consultant Hepatologist at King’s<br />
College Hospital. He has a clinical interest in viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma and his research is focused on immunotherapy for<br />
viral hepatitis.<br />
Bruce Hendry is Professor of Renal Medicine at King’s College London. He graduated in medicine from the University of Oxford and received<br />
his PhD in biophysics from the University of Cambridge. He is Academic Vice-President of the UK Renal Association. His major research<br />
interests are in the cell and molecular biology of progressive renal fibrosis. Professor Hendry also leads a clinical research programme and<br />
has particular interests in the renal complications of HIV disease.<br />
Ali Judd is a Senior Epidemiologist at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit, London. She coordinates the Collaborative HIV Paediatric Study (CHIPS) and<br />
takes a lead role in the European Pregnancy and Paediatric HIV Cohort Collaboration (EPPICC). She is also involved in randomised trials run<br />
by PENTA. She was elected to the Executive Committee of CHIVA in 2009.<br />
Sebastian Lucas has studied the morbid anatomy of HIV/AIDS, in Africa and the UK, since the mid-1980s. His particular interest is in<br />
correlating clinical and imaging diagnoses in patients with the pathology and the treatment. Professor Lucas is ex-Chair of the <strong>BHIVA</strong><br />
Education and Scientific Subcommittee, and sits on the Conferences Subcommittee. He works in the Department of Histopathology at<br />
St Thomas’ Hospital, London.<br />

Jens Lundgren is Professor of Viral Diseases at the University of Copenhagen, and Chief Physician at the National University Hospital in<br />
Copenhagen. He is founder and director of the Copenhagen HIV <strong>Programme</strong>, a research centre that has contributed to the design and<br />
conduct of several international studies on HIV, including the following: EuroSIDA, D:A:D, SMART, ESPRIT and START. He co-chairs the HIV<br />
in Europe initiative, focused on earlier testing and care for HIV-positive persons across the continent, and the PARTNER study assessing risk<br />
of HIV transmission in serodiscordant couples. He chairs the Scientific Steering Committee of INSIGHT – the International Network for<br />
Strategic Initiatives in Global HIV Trials – and the D:A:D Steering Committee. He is joint Editor-in-Chief of HIV Medicine. Professor Lundgren<br />
is co-author on more than 300 scientific peer-reviewed publications.<br />
Hermione Lyall is an Infectious Diseases Paediatrician, and her main areas are the prevention of transmission from mother to infant, and<br />
the management of HIV-infected children and young people. She is a member of the family clinic HIV team at St Mary’s, Paddington,<br />
London and has previously been the Chair of CHIVA. She is on the Steering Committee of PENTA (Paediatric European Network for the<br />
Treatment of AIDS) and participates in international treatment trials for HIV-infected children. Dr Lyall is the Chair of Training for PENTA,<br />
training clinicians who care for children with HIV in Europe and Africa.<br />
Janice Main trained in Dundee Medical School and is currently a Reader in Infectious Diseases and General Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital<br />
(Imperial NHS Trust). She is involved in the care of inpatients and outpatients with a wide range of medical problems including HIV and viral<br />
hepatitis.<br />
Susan McDonald is an HIV Nurse Practitioner working for Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and based at St Mary’s Hospital in London.<br />
She has worked in the HIV/AIDS field for 9 years in the UK and in 2005 worked as an HIV clinical preceptor in Botswana. Since 2006, she<br />
has been involved in developing services for HIV-positive adolescents and young adults, to support those moving over from paediatric to<br />
adult services and those who are newly diagnosed.<br />
Áine McKnight started her research in HIV/AIDS with Professor Weiss at ICR in 1987. She is Professor of Viral Pathology at Barts & The London<br />
Medical School. Her research focuses on the interplay of HIV with the immune system particularly with regard to viral interactions with host<br />
cell restriction systems.<br />
Paddy McMaster is Paediatric Infectious Diseases Lead for the University Hospital of North Staffordshire. He has developed the Paediatric<br />
and Perinatal HIV Service with children referred from neighbouring districts. Dr McMaster has been involved in setting up the network in<br />
the Northwest. He has been on the CHIVA Executive Committee since 2005 and is in the second year of his term as Chair of the Association.<br />
Silvia Montoto joined the Institute of Cancer in February 2004 as Senior Lecturer in Medical Oncology. Her research is focused on the study<br />
of the natural history and prognostic factors in patients with lymphoma, with a specific interest in the study of lymphoid malignancies in<br />
patients with HIV infection, taking advantage of the referral pattern within the Cancer Network, which has made St Bartholomew’s Hospital<br />
the reference centre for North-East London for such populations.<br />
Angelina Namiba has over 12 years’ experience working in the HIV sector on initiatives ranging from support, advocacy and training for<br />
HIV-positive women; advice to healthcare and other professionals involved in the care of HIV-positive women; to HIV prevention for African<br />
communities. Angelina has also managed the Primary Care Access Project at Positively UK – the project was commissioned by NHS<br />
Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster to consult with relevant stakeholders and to propose models of care to enable people living with<br />
HIV to better access primary health care services. She is currently managing the From Pregnancy to Baby and Beyond project at Positively<br />
UK (www.positivelyuk.org). This aims to provide information, practical and emotional support for women living with HIV through all stages<br />
of ante-natal to post-natal care.<br />
Anton Pozniak worked as a Consultant Physician in Zimbabwe where he researched for his doctorate in TB/HIV, moving back to the UK in<br />
1991. He ran the HIV Research Unit at King’s College, London before moving to his current position as Consultant Physician/Senior Lecturer<br />
at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in 1998. He has been made a Life Member of the British HIV Association and has helped write<br />
the British HIV Association (<strong>BHIVA</strong>) anti-viral HIV guidelines and chairs the TB/HIV Guidelines Committee. He was an advisor on HIV and<br />
AIDS to the UK Government Health Select Committee and is on the Expert Advisory Group on AIDS for the UK Department of Health. He<br />
is an Executive Committee member of <strong>BHIVA</strong>, the European AIDS Clinical Society and is on the Governing Council of the IAS. He is Vice<br />
Chair of the European AIDS trial network NEAT. He has published widely on clinical aspects of HIV treatment and care.<br />
Claire Robertson is a Consultant in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, where she is the Lead for Integrated<br />
Sexual Health Services. Her special interests include HIV in adolescents, sexual health in young people, and psychosexual medicine.<br />
Karen Rogstad is a Consultant Physician in Genitourinary Medicine, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and Honorary Senior Lecturer,<br />
University of Sheffield. She is Chair of the Education Committee of The British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH), previous Chair<br />
and current member of the Adolescent Special Interest Group of BASHH. She is co-author of BASHH guidelines on Management of Sexually<br />
Transmitted Infections and Related Conditions in Children and Young People (2009), <strong>BHIVA</strong>/BASHH/BIS Guidelines on HIV testing, and<br />
RPCH Guidelines on Physical Signs in Child Sexual Abuse. Dr Rogstad’s special interests are children and adolescents, travel-associated STIs,<br />

Catriona Ross is the Lead Health Adviser at TEAM Clinic, the adolescent HIV clinic at the Mortimer Market Centre. Catriona works with<br />
adolescent patients with HIV at Great Ormond Street around sexual health and transition issues. Catriona is also a qualified counsellor and<br />
has previously worked at Brook London.<br />
Ewen Stewart is a General Practitioner working in Edinburgh and has had an interest in HIV since 1990. He also works for NHS Lothian as<br />
Clinical Lead for Hepatitis C. He was on the writing group for the <strong>BHIVA</strong> HIV Testing Guidelines 2008. He is Chair of the Royal College of<br />
General Practitioners’ Sex, Drugs and HIV Group and a member of the Expert Advisory Group on AIDS.<br />
Chris Taylor is Clinical Lead for Sexual Health and HIV at King’s College Hospital London. He was appointed a consultant in 1995 and shortly<br />
thereafter set up one of the first clinics in the UK, in conjunction with the Institute of Liver Studies, for patients with HIV and hepatitis<br />
co-infection. He has been involved in the KCH HIV liver transplant programme since its inception in the early 1990s.<br />
Graham Taylor qualified MB ChB from the University of Birmingham Medical School and trained in General Internal Medicine in the West<br />
Midlands and South Wales before being appointed as Chief Medical Officer (Medicine) for the Solomon Islands. He subsequently joined<br />
the academic department of GU Medicine & Communicable Diseases at Imperial College Faculty of Medicine (formerly St Mary’s Hospital<br />
Medical School). His clinical and research interests are the management of HIV infection during pregnancy and the pathogenesis and<br />
treatment of HTLV-I infection and diseases. Dr Taylor is a member of the WHO working party on Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission<br />
(2005–2006). He has been a member of the British HIV Association Guidelines Writing Committee on the Management of HIV Infection in<br />
Pregnancy since the first guidelines (1998). His main research interests are the use of antiretroviral therapy in pregnancy, pharmacokinetics<br />
in pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes (including pre-term delivery and pre-eclampsia), long-term maternal outcomes and resistance to<br />
antiretrovirals.<br />
Steve Taylor is a Consultant Physician in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, and an Honorary Senior Clinical<br />
Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. He has been the Lead Consultant for the Birmingham Heartlands HIV Service since 2004. He<br />
obtained his PhD in 2002 with a thesis on The Sexual Transmission of HIV. During this time he developed an interest in HIV transmission,<br />
resistance and HIV clinical pharmacology, areas in which he has presented and published widely.<br />
Steve Welch has been a Consultant in Paediatric HIV and Infectious Diseases at Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham since 2006. He has helped<br />
establish adolescent transition services, and is one of the authors of the 2009 PENTA HIV treatment guideline.<br />
Ed Wilkins is Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Director of the HIV Research Unit at North Manchester General Hospital. Dr Wilkins trained<br />
in infectious diseases in London and Liverpool, tropical medicine in Africa, and medical microbiology with the Health Protection Agency,<br />
prior to taking up his current position in 1991. He has been involved with HIV patient care and research since 1984, with interests in<br />
antiretroviral toxicity, hepatitis co-infection and the investigation of treatment strategies, as well as being an active member of many<br />
executive and advisory national committees including <strong>BHIVA</strong>.<br />
Ian Williams is a Senior Lecturer at University College London and an Honorary Consultant Physician at Camden PCT and University College<br />
London Hospitals. He has extensive clinical and research experience in HIV medicine. He has previously been a member of the <strong>BHIVA</strong><br />
Executive Committee from 1996–2003 and served as Honorary Treasurer of the Association from 2000–2003. Dr Williams was re-elected<br />
to the Executive Committee in 2006 and sits on the Education and Scientific, and Guidelines Subcommittees and the Website Working<br />
Group. He was elected Chair-Elect in September 2007 and took over the role of Chair from Professor Johnson at the <strong>BHIVA</strong> 14th Annual<br />
Conference in April 2008.<br />
Alan Winston is a Consultant Physician and Clinical Senior Lecturer at St Mary’s Hospital and Imperial College London. He has an MD in clinical<br />
