without knowing it was built
Lisa says she doubted whether
a high-quality house could be
built in a week, but adds: “I am
here to tell you firsthand, it is
all real and there are so many
wonderful people who you
never get to see who volunteer
their time and money to make
this all possible. Not a dime was
spent to put this house together.
EVERYTHING was donated.
I feel so blessed to have had a
chance to be part of it all.”
A new study co-authored
by University of Colorado-
Boulder Assistant Professor
Noah Fierer indicates that
not only do human hands
harbor far higher numbers of
bacteria species than previously
believed, but that women
have a significantly greater
diversity of microbes on their
palms than men. The results,
he said, have implications for
better understanding human
bacteria and should help
establish a “healthy baseline”
to detect microbial community
differences on individuals that
are associated with a wide
variety of human diseases.
After nearly a year of
preparation, Alex Hassman
and three friends headed to
southwest Peru last October
to kayak the Cotahausi River
canyon, reputed to be the
deepest in the world. The
Cotahausi River is located
about 700 kilometers (about
420 miles) north of the city of
Arequipe, in a band of the arid
Andean mountains. Draining
west, the river drops nearly
6,000 feet as it travels over 200
kilometers to the Pacific Ocean.
Alex and friends spent five days
paddling. They saw Inca farm
terraces along this world-class
whitewater river. “Several places
we stop and explore the ruins of
a village or burial site and find
perfectly intact human skulls,
pieces of clothing, painted
pottery shards, and hollowedout
musical instruments,” Alex
wrote in his journal. “Never
before have I been in a place
where such adrenaline and the
history of an ancient civilization
coexist.” As soon as this
adventure ended, he was already
planning his next trip.
