There is always one
moment in childhood
when the door opens
and lets the future in.
Deepak Chopra
The average child at Drueding is 3 years
old and may already know what it's like to
go to bed hungry and sleep on the street.
One Moment
in childhood
At Drueding Center/Project Rainbow, we see single mothers and their children struggling with severe
hardship. All are homeless, some have been traumatized by abuse, others have health problems that have
gone unattended. Some mothers never received the education or training needed to sustain a family on their
own. Their children may lack the self-esteem and security that come from having a stable home environment.
In this report, we celebrate the children of Drueding Center/Project Rainbow. While their mothers are the focus
of academic, vocational and life skills programs to achieve self-sufficiency, the children require a different kind
of attention. Our challenge has been to instill hope in these youths for a life ahead that includes a home, an
education, a nurturing parent and a belief in their own future. We accomplish this through programs and activities that give
them opportunities to learn, to play, to express their creativity and to become responsible community members.
If we truly want to end homelessness and the cyclical effects of poverty, we must turn our attention to the next generation.
Physician and author Deepak Chopra said something that resonates when we think of our mission at Drueding: “There is
always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in.”
We see the sum of what we offer children at Drueding as being that one defining moment. Thanks to your continuing
support, we have watched how programs like Child Care, Head Start, our After School Program and the Drueding
Teen Network infuse our youths with greater confidence, stronger values and optimism about tomorrow.
By giving children the encouragement and resources to succeed, we open the door.
“Let the future in,” we say.
Opening the Door
Family homelessness is on the rise.
Requests for emergency shelter by families
have increased every year since 1985.
Only one in five homeless mothers receive
financial assistance from family, partners or
friends, according to the National Center on
Family Homelessness.
Many children arrive at Drueding after
being shuffled from place to place among
relatives or in foster care. The average
child in the residence is 3 years old and
may already know what it’s like to go to
bed hungry or sleep on the street. Older
children and teens may have witnessed the
terror of domestic abuse, experienced a stressful eviction or suffered the
neglect of a drug-addicted parent.
How do you keep a child’s dreams alive in the midst of deprivation?
Rates of emotional and mental health problems are high among
homeless children, as are academic difficulties. Giving these children a
sense of normalcy is as important at Drueding as
providing mothers with counseling and resources.
A dedicated family advocate sees that each family
member receives the personal care required to heal,
grow and begin anew. While mothers work
toward self-sufficiency through education
and training programs, infants
and toddlers benefit from extra
attention in the Child Care Center.
Preschoolers, some with
developmental delays, reap the
advantages of Head Start. Older
page 3
youths have Drueding’s After School Program, where they get help
with homework, have fun and mature under adult guidance, and the
Drueding Teen Network offering workshops, trips and activities.
“The children are encouraged at Drueding to go for it – that if they
work at it, they can accomplish anything,” says Beverly, a mother of five
who overcame her battle with drug addiction and graduated from
Drueding in 1993. Knowing she can count on the support of the
Drueding Teen Network makes life a lot easier and gives the family
something to look forward to, she adds. “My daughter used to feel bad
about her weight, but after taking a workshop on self-esteem, she
learned that what she feels on the inside matters more – that she is
beautiful in her own way.”
“Everything I’ve been through is still out there,” observes Bev, determined
that her children won’t make the same mistakes she did. “Having
the kids participate in the Teen Network helps them stay out of trouble.”
Making rainbows appear for families in need
Since Drueding Center/Project Rainbow opened its doors in 1987, The Drueding Foundation has been
adding colors to the rainbow for more than 550 families and 1,000 children in North Philadelphia.
Our immense gratitude goes to the Drueding Foundation members below for their unwavering financial
and volunteer support. They have been important partners to Holy Redeemer Health System in its mission to
care, comfort and heal the most vulnerable mothers and children in our community.
The Art of
Healing
The Family Arts Project was launched last summer as a
collaboration between Drueding Center/Project
Rainbow and Art-Reach, a Philadelphia organization
that makes art and music accessible to underserved
audiences. Drueding residents and graduates enjoyed 18
workshops and special events with artists from the Clay
Studio and Strings for Schools. For most, this was their
first interaction with a professional artist or musician.
“Magical” is how the workshop’s facilitator described the
joy of mothers and children accompanying the
musicians on instruments they crafted themselves.
The workshops can have made a significant impact
on the families, too. Some inattentive children become
completely engaged and focused once they start on a
clay project. “Many children start out shy, but become
more confident as they express themselves
creatively and feel good about what they’ve made and
accomplished,” said Heather Stotter, who oversaw the
youth program. Studies at the University of Pennsylvania
have shown as well that children in disadvantaged neighborhoods
who participate in cultural programs have much
lower rates of truancy and juvenile delinquency.
The Child That’s Got His Own
Drueding sponsors a variety of programs that
allow young people to be children again – to
laugh, to learn, to imagine and to feel a part of
the community. “We want to provide teens with
the necessary tools to face the real world and
all the issues and problems that come with it.
Our goal is to see these youths become
self-sufficient young adults,” says Heather
Stotter, Drueding’s Youth Coordinator.
Too often, poor or homeless children receive
second-class services and minimal opportunities
– or none at all. Many have had to change
schools multiple times. At Drueding Center/Project Rainbow, the aim is
to give these children access to the best of everything – in education,
personal development, health care,
cultural enrichment and stimulating
activities, says executive director
Anne Marie Collins.
The Drueding Teen Network
was created at the urging of program
graduates who were concerned
that their children would get left
behind after leaving Drueding.
Open to youths, ages 8-21, the
Teen Network offers practical
workshops on conflict
resolution, career
awareness and health, as
well as fun classes on
karate, art and drums. Or
teens can branch out by
page 5
contributing drawings, poems and reviews of movies, books and music to
the Network newsletter.
The responsibility of “paying it forward” is introduced to the youths
who perform volunteer services at a number of area organizations. Bev’s
15-year-old daughter, Jeneen, is president of the Teen Network and
recently baked cookies that were sold to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims.
She and other members of the Teen Network helped Philadelphia Cares
paint public school classrooms, among other community service projects
over the year.
Jeneen says she’s gotten
the guidance she needs
from Drueding staff
members to pursue her
long-term goal of going to
college to be a pharmacist.
“I want to have a good life,
a good home, a good job I
like doing.” Asked what
she's learned from being
homeless, the 10th grader
replies: “If you’re determined
to have a better life,
you can have it.”
Jeneen’s favorite activity
at Drueding is helping out
at the annual Christmas
party for residents and
graduates. “I like seeing
everyone get back together
after their lives have been
situated.”
“Mama may have,
That’s got his own.”
Among Drueding graduates, 53% are
now employed at full- or part-time jobs and
20% are enrolled in job training or going
to school.
Case managers continue to assist families
for seven years after they leave the
transitional housing program. Here, a
to prepare her for living on her own again.
Keeping the
Dream Alive
During FY O5, Drueding moved forward on many
important initiatives:
• Increased collaborative efforts with other programs and
agencies for more effective delivery of drug/alcohol,
parenting, housing and training services.
• Assisted in the development of Philadelphia’s Ten Year Plan
to End Homelessness, endorsed by the Mayor.
• Increased the number of participants in the Drueding Teen
Network and implemented Reach to Your Youth Mentor
Project with teens.
• Executive director of Drueding appointed to Mayor’s
Taskforce on Homeless Services.
• Secured the remainder of funding needed to replace an old
elevator in the residential facility.
• Participated in Philadelphia Housing Authority’s Good
Neighbor program in collaboration with the Blueprint to End
Homelessness.
• Took part in the Knight Foundation’s “Early to Read”
program.
Plans for FY 06 include:
• Apply for national accreditation of Drueding’s Child Care
Center
• Initiate a program-wide literacy effort.
• Launch an advocacy council to teach residents and
graduates about advocacy, develop their leadership skills
and establish a Speaker’s Bureau.
• Contribute to the work of Philadelphia’s Ten Year Plan to
End Homelessness.
• Integrate North Philadelphia community members into
more Drueding programs.
Letting the Future In
Drueding Center/Project Rainbow is a place that homeless
women and children can call their own. Kareatha lost her job
when she broke her ankle and was unable to keep up her rent. Prior
to coming to Drueding, she and her two children were sharing
living space with other families
in a shelter, and she feels
extremely fortunate that her family
has a private unit at Drueding
now. “I get to cook my own
meals here and do my laundry in
the building.”
Kareatha says that the computer
lab available to her as a
resident is invaluable in looking
for employment that will enable
her to live independently. She is
on several subsidized housing
lists and looking forward to
having her own home again.
Once she’s there, case managers or family advocates from
Drueding’s After Care program will follow the progress of each person
in her family for the next seven years and provide whatever
support is still needed.
Of 86 Drueding graduates now being followed, 53 percent of the
mothers are now holding full-or part-time jobs. An additional 20
percent of the women are enrolled in job training programs or are in
school and on their way to living independently.
page 8
“The people at Drueding are here for
"I had to learn how
you,” Janeen says. The petite mother of two
to be a mother and arrived three months ago with her two children.
Life is still a struggle, she sighs, but
build a relationship notes the programs at Drueding are just what
she needs. “I’m taking classes here now
with my kids."
because I want to be able to read to my
5-year-old.”
Looking back, Bev says that the parenting classes she took while a
resident at Drueding were critical in getting three of her five children
back from foster care. “I had to learn how to be a mother and build a relationship
with my kids. I learned the difference between their needs and
wants, and the difference between being their parent and their friend.”
Today, Bev is employed and living in her own
home with five children who are able to
count on her. She works as the coordinator
of Drueding’s on-site thrift store and
serves on the Drueding Board of Directors.
“I know I’ve accomplished something
from the look in my kids’ faces,”
says Bev. “They love me, every
last one, and they know
I love them.”

It Takes a Village
Support from the community figures into every success story
at Drueding Center/Project Rainbow. Without the money
and in-kind gifts we receive from committed donors, there
would be no rainbow – no literacy programs, no activities for
kids after school, no training for mothers seeking employment
or guidance for families needing affordable housing.
Add the support of dedicated volunteers throughout the year
– from organizers of the Whitemarsh Valley Country Club golf
tournament benefit, to Holy Redeemer’s Dreams Come True
Committee that orchestrated the successful Spring Fiesta at
Saybrook fundraiser. Additional applause goes to the hardworking
committee that produced the annual Silent/Live
Auction in 2004 which raised more than $200,000 for Drueding.
We thank all of the following individuals, businesses, agencies
and foundations for their generous contributions received
between July 1, 2004, and June 30, 2005. The assistance is
gratefully appreciated by the board, our staff and most
especially by our residents.
mission to care, comfort and heal
that its founders, the Sisters of the
Holy Redeemer, began in our region
in 1924 – to provide the communities
we serve with high quality,
compassionate care.
Today, Holy Redeemer offers a
wide range of healthcare and health-related services,
including home health and hospice services, an
acute care hospital, two skilled nursing and assisted
living facilities, a retirement community for active
adults, a subsidized housing community for seniors,
and a transitional housing program for homeless
women and children.
With corporate offices in Huntingdon Valley, PA,
Holy Redeemer Health System is a Catholic healthcare
provider serving southeastern Pennsylvania
and 11 counties in New Jersey, from Union County
