OMG, how cute is this little fella? He’s Daniel Tiger, and he’s coming to our neighborhood every day of the week! WHRO introduces Daniel Tiger, one of the best friends a preschooler could have! You may remember his father: Daniel Striped Tiger, one of the delightful creations of Fred Rogers. Well, Daniel Striped Tiger grew up, got married, and he and Mom Tiger welcomed young Daniel Tiger to their home. In this charming program, it’s always a “Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” as young Daniel zips up his little red sweater and invites viewers for a ride on the Neighborhood Trolley, to a different place in the Neighborhood where he plays and learns with his friends. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is a new, beautifully-textured animated series from PBS KIDS for preschoolers aged 2-4, based on the legacy of Fred Rogers. Its cast includes the children of his original and much-loved Neighborhood of Make-Believe: O the Owl, Katerina Kittycat, Prince Wednesday, and Miss Elaina. Together, through imagination, creativity and music, they learn the key social skills necessary for school and for life. Radio Highlights Dwight Davis Daedalus Quartet Shari Barbour Cathy Lewis Paul Shugrue LOCAL CLASSiCAL MuSiC ReTuRNS TO WHRO FM September is usually thought of as marking the beginning of the arts season, and so it is in Hampton Roads. The Virginia Symphony’s first Classics concert is September 7th. The curtain goes up on the Stage Company’s first production at the end of the month, and the Virginia Opera presents it first-ever production of The Pearl Fishers on the 29th. In anticipation of the Bizet opera, WHRO-FM will bring listeners a preview of the colorful work with Glenn Winters, Saturday afternoon, September 22. And stay tuned for arts information as well as Virginia Symphony and Virginia Opera broadcasts as we enter a new season of outstanding performances. SuMMeR STAGe CONTiNueS This month, we will continue our SummerStages series on Wednesday evenings with another performance from the Brevard Music Center in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. Joann Falletta will conduct this all-Russian festival concert. We will then feature two programs recorded at this year’s Virginia Arts Festival, chamber concerts with pianist Andre Michel Schub, violinist Tianwa Yang and the Daedalus Quartet. SOMeTHiNG FOR eVeRyONe Listeners to our Midday Classics with Shari Barbour will have noticed that the noon hour is given over to “Something for Everyone.” It’s a unique mix of music - perhaps a little of Broadway, perhaps some familiar classical piece in an unusual arrangement – which pushes the classical boundaries a bit, but is always in good taste and is always entertaining. Join Shari as she presents something special for you and everyone each weekday at the lunch hour. COuNTDOWN TO NOVeMBeR WHRV 89.5FM is the place for political coverage this fall. In addition to national coverage from the trusted reporters at NPR, we’re carrying both the Democratic and Republican Conventions and the Presidential debates. And WHRV will carry our own local Congressional debate as well, as Paul Hirschbiel and Scott Rigell meet on October 12th at 7pm to talk about the issues important to local voters. WHRV has a long history of providing listeners with sound and reliable information to make informed decisions in the voting booth. This year is no different.
