I said that that statistic was music to the ears of everyone at WHRO, as was the reduction in the number of Norfolk dropouts over the last 12 months from 411 to 287. As one of the public media stations selected by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to participate in American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen, a public media initiative designed to help communities address the high school dropout crisis, WHRO has a specific partnership with Norfolk Public Schools to focus on lowering the dropout rate and increase on-time graduation in that city’s public school system. And because WHRO is owned by 18 school divisions throughout greater Hampton Roads, we’ve also worked comprehensively with all area school superintendents, educators and even students to explore the issue and look for effective solutions. We raised public awareness with ads in the Pilot and Inside Business. Hearsay and Another View devoted episodes to the crisis. And we hosted events with community partners, beginning in January at Norfolk State University for the Community TechFest and STEM Video Game Challenge Training. age-appropriate book. We produced Challenging Circumstances: the Dropout Epidemic, the first of two WHRO documentaries further exploring the topic. (A follow up program will air this November.) We welcomed PBS President Pat Harrison to Hampton Roads, and accompanied her to Sewells Point Elementary, where she and Admiral Tim Alexander, Commander for the Mid-Atlantic Region, met with teachers and read to first grade classes. We hosted a reception for area teachers, including eighteen who participated in the StoryCorps’ National Teachers Initiative. We hosted a Teacher Town Hall Meeting, one of twelve scheduled across the country as part of American Graduate. One hundred area teachers came to WHRO to share perspectives and ideas about keeping students in school. Over the summer, we hosted our 22nd Tech Trek, a weeklong technology immersion program for teachers to acquaint them with the newest technology and ways to introduce it to students. Students participated over the summer as well: we conducted Digital Storytelling workshops for more than 50 Norfolk middle and high school students at the Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Camp Inspire and at the YMCA’s Escape To The Arts camp. These efforts are nowhere near enough to solve the dropout problem – but it’s our hope that they might serve as a place to begin serious conversations. There’s far more work to be done, and it must be done by everyone in the communities of Hampton Roads – not just Norfolk, but all of the cities and towns that make up this vibrant area of the Commonwealth.
