We hope you will enjoy our Annual Report summarizing this past 2006-2007 school year. The results speak for 

themselves: it was another fantastic fundraising year at Nichols. On behalf of our students, staff and faculty, we 

would like to express our gratitude for your loyalty and record-breaking support. We must give special thanks to 

all the dedicated volunteers for giving their time and energy to the Annual Fund, especially our Chairman, 

John Farmelo ’77, our long term Headmasters Society Chairmen, Amy Habib and Bill Hudson ’60, and our 

dedicated Board of Trustees under the leadership of President Bill Gisel ’70. We would also like to recognize 

everyone that worked on and attended the Derby Day 

Auction, the Big Green Dinner and all other 

school-sponsored events throughout the year. 

We are proud to share some stories with you to 

reinforce the power of a Nichols education. We hope you 

enjoy reading about some of the Nichols “connections” 

that happen everyday. Ashley, Colin, Ned, and Sean 

represent hundreds of Nichols alumni that have gone on 

to fascinating and rewarding careers across the globe. 

They, like so many of our alumni, are helping our 

environment, teaching our youth, tackling global issues to 

improve quality of life for all. They got their start at 

Nichols and still remember many of the lessons learned 

through classmates, teachers and friends. 

Again, thank you for caring so much about Nichols.

Background: Nichols School class of 1992. BA in 

English and Visual Arts from Brown University. After 

Brown, held a series of jobs in television, including 

working for the Discovery Channel and MTV. Attended 

night school at Columbia University in preparation for 

Harvard Business School where he received his MBA. 

Joined global business consulting firm, McKinsey & 

Company where he was introduced to Bobby Shriver and 

Bono, founders of (PRODUCT) RED , a major fundraising 

initiative to combat the spread of AIDS in Africa. 

Currently living in Los Angeles and is Chief Operating 

Officer of (PRODUCT) RED . 

with Colin Brady ’92 

What is (PRODUCT) RED ? The idea is really quite simple. 

We encourage companies who market consumer goods 

to make a special line of their products and paint them 

red. These companies then donate a percentage of the 

profits from (RED) products sold. We use the money to 

buy and distribute anti-retroviral medicine to those living 

with AIDS in Africa. It was launched in 2006 and we 

generated $25 million in our first year. 

Major accomplishment: I am certainly very proud of the 

work we are doing at (PRODUCT) RED and it has been great 

to meet and work with people like Bobby Shriver and 

Bono, but I would have to say my major accomplishment 

has been marrying Patricia Hughes (Nichols class of 1992). 

Most memorable Nichols experience? It’s odd, but my 

clearest memory of Nichols was my very first. Visiting the 

school in sixth grade, I walked into a classroom full of 

students diagramming sentences. It was a terrifying 

experience because I had no idea what they were doing. 

I still don’t. 

How did Nichols prepare you for life after school? I guess 

I learned how important it is to do the work. Regardless of 

what people tell you, you can do anything you want as long 

as you do the work. That’s what I learned. Oh, and just a 

very basic understanding of grammar which I try to use 

everyday. 

Did any one Nichols teacher or coach have special 

influence on you? I was very lucky at Nichols because so 

many teachers invested extra effort in me. But if you are 

going to pick one, Bill Morris ’61 had a huge impact on 

me. He just seemed to be asking us a whole different set of 

questions. We were lucky to have had him.

Background: Nichols School class of 1997. Received BA 

from Harvard University in Environmental Science and 

Public Policy. Worked as a travel writer for Let’s Go Alaska 

and the Pacific Northwest guide book, an endangered bird 

biologist in Maui, a sea otter biologist in California, and an 

environmental educator in Oregon before returning to 

school at Colorado State University. Earned a master’s 

degree in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources. 

Currently live in Ashland, Oregon working as Education 

and Outreach Director for the Klamath Bird Observatory, a 

non-profit that advances bird and habitat conservation. 

with Ashley Dayer ’97 

How did you become so interested in wildlife? I have 

come to the world of bird education via a path dedicated to 

wildlife conservation that has again and again been 

checkered with bird experiences since I was a senior at 

Nichols working on my Senior Project. I have sampled the 

approaches of wildlife rehabilitation, field research, 

environmental education, and social science and spanned 

seabirds to marine mammals to honeycreepers to shorebirds 

to state-managed wildlife and to songbirds, and moved from 

the Florida Coast to the Bay of Fundy to Monterey Bay to 

Maui’s rainforest to the Oregon Coast to the Rocky 

Mountains to the Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion. 

In each of these types of jobs, regardless of focus wildlife 

or location, I have evaluated my job with the single 

question, “Am I impacting wildlife conservation?” And in 

asking this question I came to realize a very critical question 

was “Can I truly impact conservation if others don’t care 

about conservation?” and most importantly “Why doesn’t 

everyone care about wildlife conservation?” 

Major accomplishment: So far in my career, I have 

educated thousands of people about birds and wildlife and 

hopefully sparked many people’s interest in supporting 

conservation. 

Favorite Nichols experience: There are two I can think of. 

First would be my senior project at the Sun Coast Seabird 

Sanctuary in Florida where I learned about bird 

conservation through rehabilitation of baby songbirds. 

Second would be my participation in the French exchange, 

which opened my eyes to another culture. I have continued 

to have an interest in cross-cultural research, particularly 

differences in human thought and relationship with nature. 

How did Nichols prepare you for life after school? 

The three years I spent at Nichols were probably the most 

important in my education. I gained excellent writing and 

time management skills 

while being challenged in 

every aspect of my education 

and extracurricular 

involvement. It was inspiring 

being among people who 

really wanted to learn. I also 

developed leadership skills at 

Nichols where I was Class 

President and Co-chair of 

the Butzer Community 

Service Program. My Nichols experience thoroughly 

prepared me for success at Harvard. 

Did any one teacher or coach have a special influence on 

you? Yes, Mrs.Walsh. She was my advisor and my mentor. 

She encouraged me to be a leader and excel in the most 

supportive manner. She aided me greatly in my transition 

from public school to Nichols and continues to have an 

interest in my success to this day.

Background: Nichols School class of 1983. BA in 

Political Science with a concentration in African Studies 

at St. Lawrence University. MA in Political Science from 

the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. 

While at St. Lawrence traveled to both Kenya and 

Denmark. Spent 16 years working in South Africa, 

Zimbabwe and Mozambique specializing in water and 

sanitation issues. Currently Director of International 

Programs at Water for People, a Denver-based water 

and sanitation not-for-profit. Responsible for all of Water 

For People’s overseas work in Africa, South America, 

Central America and India. 

with Ned Breslin ’83 

How did you become interested in water? I was first 

exposed to water supply issues when I worked on a water 

project in Northern Kenya. I was hooked from there, as it 

is impossible for countries to develop effectively without 

reliable access to water. 

Major accomplishment: The development of innovative 

monitoring and GIS mapping systems designed 

to assess water system functionality in Africa, Asia and 

Latin America. 

Favorite Nichols experience: Meeting my wife Lindsey 

Truscott ’84. We now have two daughters, Kimberley and 

Jemma. Lindsey has been with me throughout my travels. 

She has done some very important work overseas with 

women’s issues such as HIV/AIDS prevention and dealing 

with domestic abuse. 

How did Nichols prepare you for life after school? I 

learned to be independent and stand on my own. It was 

at Nichols that I first became interested in living abroad. 

I also learned to deal with multiple viewpoints in a 

professional, reasonable and respectful manner. 

Did any one teacher or coach have a special influence 

on you? Yes, Dick Stratton. He asked hard questions and 

encouraged debate in his classes. I think he made me a 

little uncomfortable at times and that was a good thing.

Background: Nichols School class of 1985. BA from 

Bowdoin College double major in History and Russian 

Language and Literature. MA in Visual Anthropology and 

Ph.d. in Social Anthropology both from University of 

Southern California. Has lived off and on in Central Asia 

since 1989. Currently Central Asian Affairs Fellow at 

Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. 

How did Central Asia become such a big part of 

your life? I became interested in the region of Central Asia 

after having studied abroad in Yugoslavia during college. 

I went to Yugoslavia in 1987 with the intent of learning 

about the Communist world, but once there I realized that 

Communism was no longer relevant or interesting, but the

issues of nationalism and Islam were extremely interesting 

and relevant to global politics. Thus, when I returned to 

college for my senior year, I decided to study Islam and 

nationalism in the Soviet Union. Then, I studied in 

Uzbekistan for a year in 1989, and I have been involved in 

the region ever since. 

Major accomplishment: I am very proud of a documentary 

film I produced about a minority group in China called the 

Uyghurs. They are a Muslim minority with aspirations of 

establishing an independent state in their homeland, much 

like the Tibetans. I spent many years studying their 

community, and I am proud to have been able to produce a 

documentary that helps tell their story to others: Muslims 

trying to establish an independent identity and much like 

the situation in Nepal, having a very difficult time. 

Favorite Nichols Experiences: Several come to mind. My 

senior project, which I did in collaboration with my 

classmate David Patchel ’85, who is now deceased, was a 

great time. We produced a film called “Burnt Toast” about 

life, growing up and teenage angst seen through the eye 

of the camera. I also played on championship hockey and 

lacrosse teams my senior year which was a great thrill. 

How did Nichols prepare you for life after school? It was 

really at Nichols when I first became aware of the world 

outside of Buffalo. Certainly my history and language 

courses peaked my interest, and I will never forget the 

exchange trip to Le Havre we took my junior year. 

Did any one Nichols teacher or coach have a special 

influence on you? My lacrosse coach, Bruce Dugan, was a 

master motivator. He really was a great communicator and 

he really taught us how to work as a team. I think of him 

often when I am 

teaching or working 

with others on a 

project.

on your 50th Reunion! 

Over the Nichols School Reunion 2007 

weekend, the Class of 1957 enjoyed a 

renewal of friendships with classmates that, 

in some cases, they had not seen in 50 years. 

As one classmate wrote later “the friendships 

from Nichols seemed to make the intervening 

years vanish.” 

Class Gift Co-chairs, John Henry, George 

Morris, Chic Smith and Jim Wadsworth lead 

the Class to attain the 1st place crown for 

50th reunion class giving with a total gift of 

$139,189. They are the forth 50th reunion 

class in the school’s history to break the 

$100,000 mark for reunion giving. The Class 

of 1957 won an unprecedented number of 

Alumni Annual Fund Awards including the Carl 

N. Reed ’19 Memorial Award for the highest 

percentage of participation with 100%, the 

Hubert L. Perry ’26 Memorial Award for the 

largest dollar amount by one class with 

$139,189, the Class of 1947 Award for the 

most improved participation for a reunion 

class with a 67% increase, and the E. W. Dann 

Stevens ’44 Award for the most improved 

dollars raised for a reunion class with a 

$134,831 increase. 

In honor of the Class of 1957’s 50th reunion, 

the Class of 1957 Scholarship Fund was 

established as a vehicle for classmates, friends 

and families to support scholarship assistance 

at Nichols School.

Endowment 

Nichols School endowment was at $20.9 

million on 6/30/07. By policy, 

approximately 5% of a three year average 

of the principal value is used by the 

School to support its various programs 

each year. Included in the total fund are 

many named funds, some of which are 

restricted for various purposes such as 

scholarships and awards. 

The following is a list of the existing 

named funds along with a brief 

description of purpose. (The market value 

as of June 30, 2007 is shown in 

parenthesis.) 

Scholarship Funds 

Nichols School is extremely grateful for all 

those who have contributed endowed 

scholarship funds. Such funds are 

fundamental to the support of our 

students, and we take pride in listing 

these funds in our Annual Report. 

The Charles E. Balbach Scholarship 

This fund was established in 1997 by the 

Board of Trustees, in honor of Charles E. 

Balbach, for his dedication and 

commitment to The Campaign for Nichols 

School. This scholarship is awarded to a 

young person of ability who has yet to 

demonstrate his or her full potential. This 

opportunity reaches out to the student at 

the margin, who we hope will discover 

that the demands of the Nichols School 

curriculum and its faculty will bring out his 

or her untapped talents. This one-year, 

non-renewable scholarship is designated 

for a candidate for the Upper School who 

demonstrates financial need. ($429,417) 

Boocock Memorial Scholarship 

This fund was established in memory of 

Philip M. B. Boocock ’22 alumnus and 

Headmaster of Nichols for over 35 years. 

Memorial gifts for his brother William 

Boocock ’18 were later added in 1984. 

Each year a deserving student is selected 

as the recipient. ($116,387)

Keith Celniker ’84 Memorial Fund 

Keith Celniker died on the eve of his 

graduation from Nichols. A scholarship is 

awarded to a deserving student who 

demonstrates many of Keith’s outstanding 

attributes. ($134,677) 

Eames and Guida Donaldson 


This is an endowed scholarship 

established by the family of Eames and 

Guida Donaldson. Each year a recipient is 

selected based on financial need and 

overall contributions to the School 

community. ($320,147) 

Duffy–Leahy Memorial 


In memory of Charles G. Duffy, Jr. and 

Virginia Leahy Duffy, established in 1999 

through the One Community Campaign, 

this fund is designed to support minority 

students, preferably Buffalo Prep 

graduates, who meet the Nichols School 

admissions criteria. ($299,166) 

Neil Farmelo Scholarship Fund 

This fund was established by Neil Farmelo 

when he was Chairman of the Board of 

Trustees and Nichols was beginning to see 

the need to increase endowment. The 

income from this endowed scholarship 

fund supports one or more students that 

qualify through the Nichols School 

Financial Aid Program. ($616,212)

Goldome Foundation 

This fund was established by the Goldome 

Foundation in 1997 to fund a Buffalo Prep 

student. The Buffalo Prep program, which 

began in 1990, assists academically 

motivated African American, Hispanic 

American and Native American students 

with placement in college preparatory

Walter Goldstein ’48 

Memorial Scholarship 

This fund was established in 1992 through 

the estate of Walter J. Goldstein ’48. It 

was Walter’s wish that a scholarship fund 

be set up for a deserving student who 

might not otherwise be able to afford the 

tuition, in hopes of giving that student a 

start in life similar to the start Walter so 

appreciated. ($497,987) 

HSBC Scholarship Fund 

This scholarship was established as a part 

of the One Community campaign by HSBC, 

out of their Western New York 

headquarters. It is dedicated to provide 

tuition aid to minority students at Nichols 

School. ($114,503) 

Henrich Scholarship 

This is an endowed scholarship fund 

established in 1973 by Mr. & Mrs. Ralph 

E. Henrich and their son, John. Mr. 

Henrich is a former trustee of Nichols and 

John is an alumnus of the class of 1959, a 

former trustee and father of four Nichols 

graduates. This scholarship is given to a

Dwight D. Hopkins 


Dwight, an alumnus of the class of 1949, 

president of the Alumni Board, and father 

of three Nichols graduates, died on August 

5, 1981. Several of his classmates decided 

to establish a scholarship in his memory. 

This scholarship is given to a student who 

has demonstrated financial need and has 

contributed to the School in both 

academics and athletics. ($90,936) 

Dudley M. Irwin, III Scholarship 

This scholarship was established in 

memory of Dudley M. Irwin, III, a member 

of the class of 1945, by his parents, Mr. & 

Mrs. Dudley M. Irwin, Jr., and a group of 

his friends. The Irwin scholarship 

recognizes an Upper School student who 

has financial need and who has shown 

talent in academics and extra-curricular 

activities at Nichols. ($66,458) 

Jay Kahle Memorial Scholarship 

The Jay Kahle Memorial Scholarship was 

established in 1979, in memory of Jay 

Kahle, a member of the class of 1952. 

The scholarship is awarded annually to an 

Upper School student with average grades, 

who demonstrates those qualities and 

characteristics which his family and friends 

admired in Jay - leadership, athletic ability, 

determination, courage, sense of humor 

and a desire to succeed. ($181,513) 

Seymour H. Knox Scholarship Fund 

This scholarship was established in 1988 

by Seymour H. Knox ’15 in recognition 

both of his philanthropy and of his 

inestimable contribution to the artistic 

richness and prominence in this 

community. The Knox Scholarship is 

awarded to students who show promise in 

the arts. ($259,641) 

Christian D. Laettner Scholarship 

This fund was established as part of the 

One Community campaign by alumnus 

Christian Laettner ’88. The income will 

support students deserving of financial 

assistance. ($110,964) 

Judgy Lytle Scholarship Fund 

Judgy Lytle died in 1965. He was a 

graduate of the class of 1964. A group of 

his friends established the fund to provide 

scholarships for entering ninth graders. A 

recipient must be an able student with a 

capacity for excellence when inspired, an 

enthusiastic athlete, and a loyal and 

sympathetic friend. ($3,490,347) 

Allen E. Neil Scholarship Fund 

This endowed scholarship fund, which 

was established by Mr. Allen Neil and his 

son Kenneth ’61, provides financial 

assistance to a deserving student or 

students. ($98,393) 

Dr. & Mrs. Oscar J. Oberkircher 

Scholar 

Begun in 1978, this endowed scholarship 

was established by Flora Oberkircher and 

her sons, Oscar R. ’54, and Paul ’51 in 

memory of Dr. Oscar J. Oberkircher.

Reader’s Digest Scholarship Fund 

DeWitt Wallace, founder of The Reader’s 

Digest, established this endowed 

scholarship in 1976, to be awarded to two 

or three students from middle income

Clark T. Roberts ’14 


This scholarship, established in 1995 

through the estate of Mary Roberts, 

provides tuition assistance to deserving 

students who express interest in athletics, 

especially track and field. ($198,568) 

Christopher Cole Scheu ’75 


This scholarship was established in 1985 

following the death of Chris Scheu, an 

outstanding member of the class of 1975, 

by the Scheu Family and friends. The 

scholarship is given to a freshman student 

who has demonstrated interest in 

community service, the arts and science. 

The selection is based on financial need 

and, once awarded, the recipient will likely 

be named through graduation. ($371,750) 

Robert L. Stone Family 


Established in 2000, this fund provides 

scholarship assistance to students in the 

Upper School who strive to be the best 

they can be in the classroom, the Nichols 

community, sports and within and outside 

of school. ($679,998) 

G. Robert Strauss, Jr. ’79 

Scholarship Award 

This scholarship was developed in 1989 

by the Strauss family and is presented 

annually at Awards Day to a junior who 

exemplifies the characteristics most

Joseph Takats Scholarship 

This scholarship was established by Joe 

Takats, an alumnus of the class of 1935. 

The Takats scholarship is awarded

contributes to the quality of life at Nichols.

The Walsh Family Scholarship 

Established through the Campaign for 

Nichols School by members of the Walsh 

Family, this fund was designed to provide 

financial aid for a successful student who 

has made a strong contribution to the 

Nichols School community.

The Western New York Foundation 


Initially established in 1972 as a loan 

fund, it was converted in 2005 to a 

scholarship fund. This fund provides 

grants to deserving and qualified students 

who are selected pursuant to Nichols

The Memorial Scholarship Fund was

classmates, family and friends. Eric was 

tragically killed in an automobile accident 

just prior to his senior year.

H. Richard MacKinder, who died in 1998. 

The income will be used to provide

Sabbatical Program 

This program was established in 1988 

through the generosity of the Glenn W. 

Flickinger family to support the continuing 

professional growth of Nichols teachers.

Austin M. Fox Endowed Chair 

The Austin M. Fox Chair was designed to 

honor and pay tribute to Austin Fox, who 

was revered for his gifts in the classroom. 

The individual named to this chair should 

exemplify excellence in teaching, should

students, and should be knowledgeable in

Kenneth Strachan Memorial Fund 

The Kenneth Strachan Fund is a trust 

whose income is used to provide 

opportunities for faculty to participate in

Albert R. Sutter Endowed Chair 

The Albert R. Sutter Chair was instituted in 

honor of Albert R. Sutter who was 

respected at Nichols School as a master 

teacher and a person of character. The 

individual named to this chair should 

exemplify excellence in the teaching of the 

humanities, and should be recognized as a 

person of strong personal values 

committed to the personal growth of 

young people. The person named will be 

a member of the English, History, Foreign 

Language or Arts Department and will 

receive a stipend to support the 

professional growth of the individual and

John Barclay Bassett ’82. The purpose of 

this fund is to support the Nichols library 

through the purchase of books and other

Huber Memorial Fund 

This fund was established in 1982 to fund 

special assembly programs and guest

Kew Raiser Fund 

This memorial fund was started by the 

friends and families of C. Taylor Kew and 

C. Victor Raiser, both members of the 

class of 1958. Its purpose was to create a 

lectureship to bring to the School persons 

who have made significant contributions 

in the fields of art and public policy.

Maisel General Intelligence Fund 

Sherman J. ’35 and Lucy Maisel made a 

gift to Nichols in 1992 to endow the GIT 

for its continuance as well as to offer a

McCarthy Fund 

This fund is in memory of Edmond D. 

McCarthy, Eugene F. McCarthy and in 

honor of their descendents who attended 

Nichols School. The income from this 

fund is to be used as follows: The 

McCarthy Prize will be presented to a 

member of the senior class who has 

shown significant growth/achievement 

while overcoming personal or scholastic 

difficulties during his/her career at 

Nichols; and, to support the Nichols 

School library or other projects that will 

enhance the educational values of Nichols

generosity of the J. Frederick Schoellkopf, 

IV Family. It supported a new course, 

Urban Studies, especially designed to

students in our metropolitan community.

Charles Stradella Fund 

This fund was established in 1989, in 

memory of Charles Stradella’15, primarily 

by members of the William Dann family.

Karr Parker, Jr. 

Summer Intern Fund 

This program was created by the Western 

New York Foundation in 1992, to endow 

an opportunity for a Nichols Upper School 

student in grades 9-11 to receive financial 

assistance for a summer work program. 

This grant honors the memory of Karr 

Parker, Jr., who was a graduate of the 

Class of 1937, a Nichols parent and former 

member of the Board of Trustees.
